Acrostics
What is an acrostic?
An acrostic is a poem (or other form of writing) in which the first letter (or syllable, or word) of each line
(or paragraph, or other recurring feature in the text) spells out a word, message or the alphabet.
A popular and well-known acrostic is:
G – God’s
R – Riches
A – At
C – Christ’s
E – Expense
An alphabet acrostic from many years ago was the song …
A, you're adorable
B, you're so beautiful
C, you're a cutie, full of charms
D, you're a darling
And E, you're exciting
And F, you're a feather in my arms
G, you look good to me
And H, you're so heavenly
I, you're the one I idolize
J, we're like Jack and Jill
K, you're so kissable
L, as the love-light in your eyes
M, n, o, p
I could go on all day
Q, r, s, t
Alphabetically speaking you're okay
And U , made my life complete
V , means you're very sweet
W, x, y, z
It's fun to wonder through
The alphabet with you
To tell you what you mean to me
Question: Can you think of any other acrostics?
Acrostics in the Bible
Note: Acrostic passages in the Bible follow the Hebrew Alphabet, which has but 22 letters.
Those who make acrostic translation into the English generally omit the letter Q, X, Y and Z.
Acrostics occur in all the five chapters that make up the Book of Lamentations, in the praise of the good
wife in Proverbs 31:10-31, and in Psalms 25, 34, 37, 111, 112, 119 and 145 of the Hebrew Bible.

Psalm 34 (An Alphabetic Psalm) LM Morning Hymn translation
At every time I bless the Lord; his praise will ever be outpoured.
Because I glorify his name, the humble hear and sing his fame.
Come, let us magnify the Lord; as one let us exalt his word.
Down in my fears I sought his face, and he delivered me by grace.
Emboldened by his holy name, your faces will be clear from shame.
For, as I cried in lowly fear, he answered, when distress was near.
God’s angels camp around the just; the Lord delivers those who trust.
How good the Lord is; taste, and see how blessed the one that is set free.
Implore the Lord, his humble saints; fear him, and there are no complaints.
Jejune and hungry lions fast, but faithful folk have food to last.
Know this, you children; know the Lord; I recommend the fear of God.
Love life and goodness every day? - Pay heed to me, and hold his way.
Make sure your tongue does not revile, and keep your lip from speaking guile.
Neglect the wrong, be doing good; seek peace in every likelihood.
Observing when the righteous cry, the Lord regards and hears on high.
Perceiving sinners and their kind, he sees and sets them out of mind.
Responding to their contrite hearts, he will console and take their part.
So when they cry, the Lord will hear, to save them from distress and fear.
The righteous face tremendous pain; the Lord will save them and sustain.
Unbroken bones he keeps secure, for those whose faith is strong and pure.
Vexatious ones, with unjust eyes, in hatred face an ill demise.
With spirits ransomed by the Lord, his guiltless servants seek his word.
Psalm 119.1-8 CM St. Peter
Aleph
All those whose way is sound are blessed, who guard the Lord’s decrees,
and seek his charge with all their heart, yes, they will walk with ease.
All those who do no wicked deed will follow in his ways,
and you command that we should keep your precepts all our days.
Ah now, if only all my ways were firm in your demands,
and then I would not be ashamed, when viewing your commands.
As I have learned with upright heart to praise you for your laws;
accept me, Lord, for I will keep your statutes, every clause.
Psalm 119.9-16 CM Song 67
Beth
But how shall youthful ones be clean, to heed your word and way?
Because I truly seek your law, O never let me stray.
Because my heart has stored your words, I keep myself from sin.
Before my eyes, Lord, you are blessed; implant your rules within.
Bar none, my lips have told of each commandment in your law.
Before me all your charges are a glorious wealth and store.
By musing on your precepts, I will look for you today.
By savouring all your statutes, I recall your words and way.
Psalm 119.17-24 CM Metzler’s Redhead
Gimel
Completely care for me, that I may keep your words in store;
correct my eyes that I may live, to see your awesome law.
Conceal no longer your commands from me, a stranger here.
Continual longing for your law consumes my soul in fear.
Contempt and cursing follow those, who stray from your commands.
Command that they be rolled away; I keep your law’s demands.
Conniving princes sit and smear; I muse on your demand,
content that all your charges are my counsel and command.
