ACTIVITY 3
Read The Pregnant Lady and the Dynamite, then answer the questions given:

A pregnant woman leading a group of five people out of a cave on a coast is stuck on the
mouth of that cave. In a short time, high tide will be upon them and unless she is unstuck,
they will all be drowned except for the woman whose head is out of the cave. Fortunately ( or
unfortunately), someone has with him a stick of dynamite. There seems no way to get the
pregnant woman loose without using the dynamite which will inevitably kill her, but if they do
not use it everyone else will drown. What should they do?

1. What would you do if you were one of the men? Explain why you decided to act that
way.

• I believe it is morally correct to use the dynamite that will murder the pregnant women
rather than being trapped with a bunch of people within the cave entrance and drowned.
I am well aware that using dynamite will kill pregnant lady, but this does not indicate
that I aim to kill them; their death is simply the effect of my action to save more lives. If
the right option is not made, everyone who is stranded, in a hole, and trapped beneath
will perish. The five locked inside the cave will perish sooner than the woman who can
breathe. She may die if she is not discovered, but it will take time and pain. The killing
of only two persons appears to be a better alternative than the murder of seven.

2. The situation or the experience you went through is a moral dilemma. What
then is a moral dilemma?
• A moral dilemma is a circumstance in which a person is torn between right and wrong,
and it examines the very heart of a person's principles and values. The person's
decision may leave them feeling burdened, guilty, relieved, or unsure of their principles.
It is a conflict scenario in which the choice made creates moral harm that cannot be
remedied quickly.

3. In finding yourself in a moral dilemma, is it a moral experience? Why or why

not?
Yes, since we are personally tested every day to make the proper decisions. Our moral
decisions are strongly tied to how we see ourselves as persons and how others see us.
It's deceptive. It could be the incorrect decision for one individual, but it could be the right
decision for another. I believe that our moral decision-making is influenced by our
education about what is right and wrong, and that it occurs when a decision-maker must
choose between two or more moral principles or obligations, only one of which can be
respected in the decision we made.
