SYNOPSIS
Civil Engineering Materials course is designed for comprehension of construction
materials in civil engineering. It will emphasizes on types and function of cement, the
function of aggregates in concrete, water, admixtures, properties of fresh and hardened
concrete, concrete mix design, and manufacturing concrete on site. This course also
focused on the properties of timber, types and characteristics of brick and concrete
block, steel and non-steel, the types and function of building finishes materials and the
introduction to building elements.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES (CLO)
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to;
1. explain the properties and behavior of different types of civil engineering
materials.(C2,PLO1)
2. relate suitable material for building elements and finishes. (C3,PLO2)
3. demonstrate good communication skills in oral presentation individually or in groups,
on assigned topics within a stipulated time frame.(A3,PLO6)

also includes the relation of the concrete mix strength with the mixture ratios
and workability of wet concrete.
2.0 CONCRETE WORKS AT THE CONSTRUCTION SITE (06:00)
This topic introduces the students to the preparing, transporting,
casting, placing, compacting and curing of concrete at the
construction site.
3.0 REINFORCED CONCRETE (03:00)
This topic deals with the characteristics of reinforced concrete
and the relationship between concrete and reinforcement.
4.0 PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE (03:00)
This topic covers the basic knowledge of the pre-stressed
concrete including the definition, principles, advantages,
manufacturing methods, types and uses of pre-stressed concrete in
construction work.
5.0 TIMBER (06:00)
This topic covers the basic knowledge on wood construction that includes
types and uses of local timber, types of defects and
effects on construction. Students will also learn about drying, preservation,
maintenance, methods of production of standard size timber and uses of
engineered woods.
6.0 BRICK (06:00)
This topic introduces the types and uses of bricks, parts of
bricks, types and uses of cut bricks. Student will also be exposed
to types of walls and their arrangement or orientation and types of
mortar joints.
