TEST ARRANGEMENT METHOD-I

One of the methods for pull out tests that shall be used is where hydraulic jack is made to rest
on rolled steel joist(s) resting on two supports on the ground. The jack reacts against a frame
attached to the top of the test pile such that when the jack is operated, the pile gets pulled up
and the reaction is transferred to the ground through the supports which are at least 2.5 D away
from the test pile periphery (where D is pile diameter). The framework shall be attached to the
pile top with the reinforcement bars which shall be threaded or to which threaded bolts may be
welded. As an alternative it is sometimes preferable to use a central rod designed to take pile
load and embedded centrally in the pile to a length equal to the bond length load required. It will
have threads at top for fixing it to the framework. For larger loads the number of rods may have
to be more and depending on the set-up these may be put in a line or in any other symmetrical
pattern.
TEST ARRANGEMENT METHOD-II
In other Method two similar hydraulic jacks were kept at the bottom of the main Girder at equal
distance (at least 2.5 D away from the test pile periphery, where “D” is pile diameter) from the
pile. These hydraulic jacks will be kept over concrete blocks or suitable supports. The pile main
reinforcements will be connected to the main girder by suitable framework. The two hydraulic
jacks will be operated by a single pump with manifolds. The load will be applied by the jack to
the main girder which will simultaneously pulls the pile.
Note: - In both methods the resultant force of the reaction system shall be coaxial with the test
pile. Load tests shall in general be carried out after 28 days from the time of casting the pile.
All load tests shall be conducted under the supervision of the Employer/Engineer. All
responsibilities for conducting the tests safely and properly rest with Turnkey contactor and the
Sub Agency.

Note: In both Test arrangement Method, it needs to be ensured that the supports used for
reaction should have adequate safe bearing capacity (SBC) of soil. If SBC of soil is inadequate
then, suitable measures like installing temporary support piles needs to be done.
Initial Pullout Load Tests on Test Piles:
The top of the pile surface shall be chipped off and a steel plate placed to provide a horizontal
plane bearing surface. Earth around the test pile shall be scooped out so that the pile can have
no soil support. Thereafter, the jacks and other accessories necessary for conducting the test
shall be set up.
The test load shall be so applied that it reaches the pile in a static manner. Reaction frame shall
be supported properly. The Reaction frame shall be properly connected to the test pile rebar
either by welding or threading arrangement, so that when the load is applied through the
hydraulic jack ,the pile gets an uplift load (Refer the Pictures /Photos above)

The displacement of the test pile shall be related to a fixed datum. This may consist of a
reference beam (datum bar) supported by two foundations positioned outside the zones of
influence of the reaction support area. The settlement measuring equipment must be set up in
such a way that any tilting of the pile will not cause errors in the measurement. Dial gauges shall
be used for measurement of deflection. The least count of Dial gauge shall be at least 0.01 mm.
At least two Dial gauges shall be used and shall be
Settlement shall be recorded with minimum 2 dial gauges of 0.01 mm sensitivity placed at
diagonally opposite corners. The dial gauges shall be normally held by datum bars resting on
immovable supports at a distance of 3D (“D” is pile diameter) or 1.5 m whichever is higher from
pile the edge of the pile.

The initial pile may be tested up to 3 times of estimated safe uplift load or until the load
displacement curve shows a clear break (downward trend).
The test shall be carried out by applying a series of vertical downward incremental load each
increment being of about 20% of design load on the pile up to the final load.
During each load increment, the pile deflection shall be recorded using dial gauges (2 dial
gauges fixed diametric opposite ends )at an interval of 15, 30, 60 minutes, up to a time till the
rate of movement of the pile top is not more than 0.2 mm/hr or until 2 hours have elapsed
whichever is earlier subject to a minimum of 1 hour.
The final load should be maintained for 24 hrs and the readings should be recorded for 15, 30,
60, 90,120 min and at every one hour till 24 hr completes.
After final load the unloading should be done, decrement of about 20% of design load.
During unloading stage the load should be maintained for 30 minutes and displacement
readings shall be recorded.
Safe Uplift (Pullout) Load:
The safe uplift load on single pile for initial test piles shall be least of the followings as per clause
9.4 of IS 2911-Part IV: 2013.
a) For piles up to and including 600mm diameter
1. 2/3rd of the load at which the total displacement is 12mm.
2. Half of the final load at which the total displacement curve shows a clear break (downward
trend).
b) For piles more than 600mm diameter
1. 2/3rd of the load at which the total displacement is 18mm or 2% of pile diameter whichever
is less.
2. Half of the load at which the total displacement curve shows a clear break (downward
trend).
Routine Pullout Load Tests on Piles:
Routine load test shall be carried up to 1.5 times working load or 12 mm total displacement for
piles diameter up to and including 600mm and 18mm or maximum of 2 % of pile diameter,
whichever is less for piles of diameter more than 600mm, whichever is earlier. Remaining
procedure is similar to initial piles.

6.4 Personal qualification and work force:

Only approved Vendors shall be engaged for the Pile load test. Approval shall be attained from
relevant authorities (Customer / Consultant).
