criteria for safe load shall be as per clause 8.4 of the above code.
concrete cube strength needs to checked before load test. The test should not be conducted if
it has not achieved M30 grade.
Instrumentation for Lateral Load Test : Instrumentation shall be done on Initial Lateral Test Piles
installing inclinometers up to depth of 10.0 m below cut-off levels to monitor the lateral ground
movement along the depth of pile and determining the actual depth of fixity.
All load tests shall be conducted under the supervision of the Employer/Engineer. All
responsibilities for conducting the tests safely and properly rest with Turnkey contactor.
The test load shall be so applied that it reaches the pile in a static manner. Jacks shall be
supported properly.
This load test shall be conducted at the cutoff level. One dial gauge placed diametrically opposite
to the jack. This dial gauge will give the displacement at the cutoff level directly. Typical lateral
load test arrangement is showing in Fig. [Link] the cutoff level is unapproachable two dial gauges
shall be keep horizontally one above other at 30 cm interval and the displacement at the cutoff
level shall be calculated using similar triangle method.
One more dial gauge shall be placed to the reaction pile for reference, (the level of placing the
dial gauge shall be similar to test pile) however this will not be used for any computations of
result.
The displacement of the test pile shall be related to a fixed datum. The deflection measuring
equipment must be set up in such a way that any tilting of the test pile will not cause errors in
the measurements. Dial gauges shall be used for measurement of deflection. The least count of
Dial gauge shall be at least 0.01 mm.
The initial pile may be tested up to 3 times of estimated safe lateral load or up to failure load
whichever occurs earlier. In case of initial lateral load test, if the lateral deflection does not
exceed 12 mm even at 3.0 times safe lateral capacity, the test load shall be gradually increased
in multiples of 20% of the estimated safe lateral load until lateral deflection of 12 mm is obtained.
The loading shall be applied in increments of about 20 percent of the estimated lateral capacity
(refer incremental load in the table) of that pile.
At each load increment, pile deflection shall be recorded using dial gauges (fixed at the pile COL)
and the readings from the inclinometers (for which the instrumentation provision is pre-installed
in the initial lateral test piles) at an interval of 1, 5,10,15, 30 minutes, up-to a time till the rate of
displacement is less than or equal to 0.1 mm per 30 minutes subject to minimum of 30 minutes.

be supported properly. The Reaction frame shall be properly connected to the test pile rebar
either by welding or threading arrangement, so that when the load is applied through the
hydraulic jack ,the pile gets an uplift load (Refer the Pictures /Photos above)
The displacement of the test pile shall be related to a fixed datum. This may consist of a
reference beam (datum bar) supported by two foundations positioned outside the zones of
influence of the reaction support area. The settlement measuring equipment must be set up in
such a way that any tilting of the pile will not cause errors in the measurement. Dial gauges shall
be used for measurement of deflection. The least count of Dial gauge shall be at least 0.01 mm.
