B. ANALYSIS
What word can you form out from these pictures? MULTIMODAL, ma’am.
Very good!
Because this afternoon we are going to tackle about multimodal. But
before we carry on to the lesson proper, please read first the objectives
of today’s lesson.
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
a) Identify the different multimodal elements
b) Compose a text which include multimodal elements.
c) Appreciate the importance of multimodal texts by making
an e-journal
Okay! Now class, we can achieve these objectives if you are going to
listen and participate in our class discussion.
Is that clear? Yes, ma’am.
C. ABSTRATION
Before we tackle about multimodal class, let us define first what
communication is.
What is communication, class? Communication is the process of delivering a
message to someone, ma’am.
Very good! When we say communication, it means relaying/ delivering
messages.
Does communication only be done through verbal or face-to-face? No, ma’am.
Why? Because we can communicate through
written.
Yes, that’s right! It is because communication is not just about relaying
messages through voice or spoken, but also written or letters.
But remember class that communication does not limit its purpose to
verbal and written text. When technology arises, different modes of
3
communication have come into existence and they are called
multimodal, because communication uses multimodal.
Now, let us discuss multimodal, class.
It means more than one, ma’am.
From the word “multi”, what does it mean?
Very good!
It relates to mode, ma’am.
How about modal?
Mode of communication.
Mode of what?
Very good!
It means there are different ways or modes,
Now, what do you mean by multimodal, class? ma’am.
Exactly!
Multimodal means or can be defined as the combination of two or more
modes of communication within the same text and where all modes are
attended to as part of meaning-making.
In other words, many texts are multimodal because the meaning is
communicated through combination of two or more modes.
To sum up everything, there are 5 elements of multimodal text.
Do you have any idea?
If none, let us tackle these elements one by one, but before that, I’ll be
showing you some pictures and please observe carefully.
1.
How are messages being conveyed? Viewing, ma’am.
Is it conveyed through listening? Speaking? Or viewing?
Very good!
4
Sight, ma’am or what we call visual.
If messages are conveyed through viewing. What sensory system is
being used?
Exactly!
Because the first element of multimodal is visual.
Visual mode means using our eyes, ma’am.
Now, what is visual/ visual mode?
When we say visual mode, it refers to the images and characters that
people see. The visual mode helps writers communicate meaning in a
way that can be seen by the audience.
This mode includes:
Colors, layouts, style, design, size, and perspective. Visual
formatting, symbols, visual data (charts, graphs), animation (like gifs).
Look at this example, class.
“No guns” ma’am.
No guns allowed, ma’am.
What is the sign/ symbol all about?
Very good! This is a “no guns” symbol.
The visual element dominates on this sign. Where the red colored sign
signals not allowed and we can see that there is a gun, so if we are
going to understand the sign, it conveys a meaning of “no guns” or
“guns are not allowed” or “no firearms allowed”.
Yes, ma’am.
Am I clear?
Another example:
5
A traffic light.
What is this?
Traffic lights consist normally of three signals in terms of colors. Stop, ma’am.
What does red light symbolize? It means slow down and be ready to stop.
What does yellow light/ amber represent? Go, ma’am.
What about green light?
Very good! Other road signs, ma’am.
Now, can you give other examples of visual mode?
Let us proceed with the second element.
2.
Sound, ma’am.
What have you observed from the pictures?
Auditory, ma’am.
Very good! What does it mean when using sound in delivering a
message? What sensory system is being used?
It means that this element is an audio mode.
It simply includes sound, ma’am.
What do you mean by audio mode, class?
Very good!
Audio mode is focused on sound but not limited to, music, sound
effects, ambient noises, silence, tone of voice in spoken language,
volume of sound, emphasis, natural/ unnatural sounds, and use of
volume beat, tempo, pitch, and rhythm.
6
We hear sounds around us and these sounds can draw thoughts,
memories, feelings, and emotions.
For example:
Sirens, ma’am.
What are these?
Danger or emergency.
Yes, that’s right. Now, what comes into your mind when we hear
sirens? Or what do sirens signify?
Exactly! Sirens signify danger or emergency.
Another examples:
A recorded speech that was delivered orally to a live.
Oral storytelling
Festival music
Aside from these, can you give another example applying the audio
mode? None, ma’am.
Any questions?
If none, let us move on to the third element.
3.
Through gestures, ma’am.
How are messages being conveyed?
Very good, through giving or making gestures.
A form of non-verbal communication,
Because the third element of multimodal is gestural.
ma’am. It refers to the movements or actions
of a person.
What is gestural mode, class?
7
Very good!
Gestural mode refers to the way movement is interpreted. In other
words, gestural mode refers to non-verbal movements.
Facial expressions, ma’am.
What are these non-verbal movements? Body postures.
Here are some non-verbal movements:
A form of non-verbal signaling using the
movement of our faces, ma’am.
1. Facial expression, what does it mean?
Facial expression- the human face is extremely expressive, able
to convey countless emotions without saying a word.
2. Body movement and posture. What do they mean? What a person is saying through movements
or postures of our body.
Consider how your perceptions of people are affected by the
way they sit, walk, stand, or hold their head. This type includes
your posture, bearing, stance, and the subtle movement you
make.
Yes, ma’am.
Am I understood?
Let us proceed with the next element.
3.
Through spoken and written, ma’am.
How are message being delivered based on the given pictures
Exactly! Through spoken and written, and this element is what we call
linguistic.
This refers to spoken or written words. In other words, it can be both
read and heard on both paper or
audio.
The linguistic mode refers to the written or spoken words. It is probably
the most widely used mode because it can be both heard on and read.
8
This mode includes:
Vocabulary
word choice None, ma’am.
grammar
the delivery of written or spoken text
the organization of words into sentences and paragraphs
the development and coherence of words and ideas
Any questions about linguistics, class?
If none let us move on to the last element.
4.
The arrangement, ma’am.
Lastly, we have spatial mode.
What do you mean by spatial, class?
Spatial mode refers to the physical arrangement, organization, and
proximity of the text.
It involves:
Organization of objects in space
Physical closeness between people and objects
Direction
Position of layout
Example:
Arrangement of chairs, ma’am.
What is the picture all about?
9
A good example of the spatial mode might be the different ways in
which chairs and desks are arranged in a classroom.
Individual desks are arranged in orderly rows, facing
the front of the room to make the teacher who would stand before
the chalkboard the center of None, ma’am.
attention. The teacher also stands at a distance from the students;
the students who sit in the back
could hardly even see the board!
Individual desks are arranged in orderly rows, facing the front of the
room to make the teacher who would stand before the chalkboard
the center of attention. (Organization of objects in space )
Another one is a brochure and how it is folded and organized.
Any questions?
Spatial (arrangement or physical closeness
If none, let’s try to determine the element of multimodal text using the between people)
given pictures. Tell whether it is visual, audio, gestural, linguistic, or
spatial.

11
Excellent, class! Your answers are al correct.
Now, based from the elements that I have discussed earlier, can you Produce through books, papers or any
site texts using two or more than elements/ using multimodal? printed materialas, ma’am
Very good! Because, again multimodal means combining two or more
than two modes in a single/ same text.
To clear things up, there are types of Multimodal texts, class.
These are simple/ printed, live, and digital.
What do you mean by simple/ printed multimodal texts, class?
Very good!
It could be visual and written, ma’am.
Simple/ Printed Multimodal texts include:
Picture books
Textbooks
Graphic novels
Comics
By the use of technology, ma’am.
Posters Text produced through digital or e-
technology, ma’am.
What elements can be applied in this type of multimodal text?
The meaning is conveyed to the reader through various combination of
modes/ elements, such as visual, written and spatial.
We also have what we call Digital Multimodal Text.
What is digital multimodal text?
Creating digital multimodal texts involves use of
communication technologies,
Very good!
Creating digital multimodal texts involves with the use of
communication technologies.
12
This may include the ff:
Film
A text that is performed live, ma’am.
Animation
Slide shows
E-posters
Digital stories
Which convey meanings through combinations of written and spoken
language, visual, audio, gestural and spatial.
Next one is live multimodal text, what does it mean?
Very good!
Examples:
Dance Combination of two or more modes, ma’am.
Performance
Oral story telling
Visual, gestural, audio, linguistic, and

spoken.
Visual mode refers to the images and
Any questions about the types of multimodal texts? characters that people see.
If none, let’s have a wrap up. Audio mode is focused on sound
Gestural mode refers to the way movement is
Again, what is multimodal, class? interpreted. In other words, gestural mode
refers to non-verbal movements.
What are the 5 elements of multimodal?
Again, what is visual/ visual mode? The linguistic mode refers to the written or
spoken words.
What about audio? Spatial mode refers to the physical
arrangement, organization, and proximity of
What does Gestural mean? the text.
Linguistic? Print, digital, and live, ma’am.
13
Because several modes are utilized,
What about spatial? multimodal texts help readers understand
concepts better, ma’am.
Very good! Like a traffic sign, ma'am, even though some
individuals cannot read, they can understand
What are the 3 types of multimodal texts? what the symbol means when they it,
because the traffic sign includes a blend of
Excellent! signs and texts, people might comprehend
what to do, like STOP, even if they cannot
Now, why do you think learning the different multimodal texts and read.
elements are important in reality?
Can you give practical examples where learning multimodal elements
present its importance?
Exactly! Very good answer.
D. APPLICATION
Finally, you were able to deal with the different related
activities to sharpen your skills on communicating effectively using
multimodal texts. Now, it’s time to evaluate your learning. Are you
ready?
Please get ready because this time you will create or compose a brief,
compelling text (in various forms and media formats) using the
multimodal elements.
The class will be divided into five groups, each of which will be given a
specific assignment related to our topic. As to the topics that you will
