Mexico was conquered by Spain in the 1500s and the native peoples like the Aztecs and Mayans were forced into slavery. In the early 1800s, a priest named Father Hidalgo wanted to fight for Mexico's independence from Spain. On September 16, 1810 Father Hidalgo delivered a famous speech called "El Grito de Dolores" rallying for Mexican independence. This began the Mexican War of Independence which lasted for years until Mexico finally gained independence from Spain in 1821.
