Saint Teresa of Calcutta

The relic of Mother Teresa during her canonization on September 4, 2016

at St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City
officiated by Pope Francis. This is called as “Mother Teresa’s Cross”

Mother Mary Teresa is honored in the Catholic Church as Saint Teresa of Calcutta.
She was born on August 26,1910 in Skopje, North Macedonia. She was an
Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun missionary.
She received the name Sister Mary Teresa after that of St Therese of the
the Child Jesus. She was the Founder of the Order of the Missionaries of Charity,
a Roman Congregation whose main mission is to help the poorest of the poor.
In December 1929, she departed for her first trip to India, arriving in Calcutta. She
was revered for her work with the poor in India. During her lifetime she became
famous as the Catholic nun who dedicated her life in caring for the destitute and
the dying in the slums of Calcutta now known as Kolkata. In 1979, she received the
Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work. She helped in building the Kingdom of
God. All throughout her life she devoted herself to God by constantly praying, and
worshipping Him. Through her compassion, Mother Teresa was able to save the lives
of many poor people in the world. For this act, she was considered as a hero.
Heroes are compassionate and have great love and care for others and since she
showed so much compassion through her caring for the poor, she exhibits necessary
qualities of a hero. Mother Teresa was a Great Role Model because she did many
things to improve the lives of other people.

Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997 at the age of 87. She was beatified on
October, 2003 and she was canonized by Pope Francis at Vatican City on
September 4, 2016. In his homily, Pope Francis said that St. Teresa has defended
the unborn, sick, abandoned and has shamed world leaders for the crimes of
poverty they themselves have created.

Mother Teresa’s Cross symbolizes her untiring service for the poor, the
sick the needy and the dying in the slums of Calcutta. Mother Teresa’s

II. What to do
In this lesson, you will:
 Explain what it means “To love like Jesus.”
 Explain what is meant by the phrase “The Power of Love.”

Let’s Begin
Opening Prayer, Greetings, Review of the previous lesson.

Open your books on page 79.Let us discuss the picture presented on this page.
Whom do you see in the picture? Very good ______! Can you guess where they
are? Very good _____! Can you guess what Jesus is doing? Very Good _______!
What about the people, what are they doing? Can you guess who these people
are? They are the disciples or followers of Jesus. Jesus is explaining to them
the conditions of discipleship or what they are supposed to do as followers of
Jesus. This is our lesson for today.

What’s New
Loving like what Jesus did is not easy. In the story from the Gospel of Matthew
16:24-27 Jesus tells us that to be His disciples means to take up our crosses
and then follow Him. One may be too young to experience the meaning of
“taking up your cross,’ but, there will be times we have to give sacrifices for the
people we love. There may be times that we have to set aside our wants and
focuses on our needs. Sometimes we have one of the unique powers God has
given each one of us is the “Power to Love.”
This power to love is shown in the lives of men and women who are
spending their time, talents and money in order to love God and others. One of
the shining example of a person who used her power to love in the best way
possible is no other than St. Teresa of Calcutta. She has written a lot about
loving God and loving others because her life was full of love.
Loving God and others as Jesus did is one of the marks of a true disciple.
All of us are called to be disciples of Jesus. To be a disciple of Jesus means
to listen to Him. To listen to Him means to obey Him all the time. To obey
Jesus means to love God and others without asking anything in return. It

also mean to love without end even those who may be hard to love such as
those who make fun of us, those who hurt us or those who does not pay
attention to us.
We have the power to love like Jesus did. Jesus Whom we always receive in
Holy Communion will help us to use this power to serve God and our
neighbor as well.
We are followers of Jesus and He calls us to love in the same way as He did.
We can love like Jesus if we are willing to listen to Him and obey His
commands.

Let’s Try It ( Formative Assessment # 2 )

Write True or False on the blank.

________1.TheHoly Communion that we receive at Holy Mass will help us
to use the power of love to serve God and our neighbor.

His commands.

“Power to Love .”

Greetings, Opening Prayer and Review of the previous lesson.

All of us were made by God in His own image and likeness. Hence, we are all
special creatures of God. The man that God has made is composed of body
and soul.We call these the two components of man. The body is material. It
can grow and it can die. It has an end. Our body needs food, shelter and
clothing for it to live. The soul is spirit. It cannot be seen. It cannot die. It
needs spiritual things such as the sacraments especially the sacraments of
Penance and the Holy Eucharist and prayers.

What’s New
The Two Kinds of Works of Mercy :

Jesus is our best example for loving God and others. To love like Jesus is to
love and serve our neighbor without asking anything in return. There are two
concrete ways by which we can be like Jesus–the Corporal Works of Mercy
and the Spiritual Works of Mercy.
All these actions are invitations for us to be loving like Jesus. Some of these
may be hard to do, but we can always join the members of our family in
performing them. Works of Mercy also known as Acts of Mercy are practices
which are considered meritorious in Christian ethics. The practice is very
popular in the Catholic Church as an act of both penance and charity. The
Page 8 of 11
Works of Mercy have been traditionally divided into two categories, each with
seven elements. These are:

a. Corporal Works of Mercy- are works of mercy which concerns the needs of
our BODY and the physical needs of others.
 See the Seven Kinds on the upper part of this page – What’s New.
b. Spiritual Works of Mercy-are works of mercy which concerns the
spiritual or the needs of our SOUL and those of
others.
