Pet translator
Have you ever wished you could understand what your dog is trying to tell you?
According to scientists at a leading USA university, you will soon be able to. The
team of scientists has studied the behaviour of prairie dogs (which are a type of
squirrel) for around thirty years. They have discovered that the animals communicate
with each other by making different noises. They can describe different types of
danger, different colours and even greet each other by varying their calls to each
other.
The team has developed a computer programme which interprets the sounds and
can translate them into English. They say that we will be able to communicate with
our dogs within ten years. The programme can also help to interpret what dogs want
by analysing their gestures or expressions.
Dogs are good at reading us – they understand our meaning when we shout, and
even when we smile – but we aren’t always very good at reading them. For example,
they sometimes don’t like people to hold or hug them, but because we like it, we
assume they do, too.
Soon, we will be able to point our phone at our dog and hear a translation which tells
us how it’s feeling or what it wants. And, if successful, the team plans to extend the
translator to cats, horses and eventually all animals.
