i. Obtain the free response of 2x ⃛ + 128x = f(t) in the form
i) x = A sin ω t + A cos ω t
ii) x = A sin ω t + ∅
Initial conditions are x (0)=0.05m and ẍ =0.3m/s

ii. The column of the water tank shown is 300 ft. high and is made of reinforced concrete
with a tubular cross section of inner diameter 8 ft. and outer diameter 10 ft. The tank
weighs 6 x 10 lb with water. By neglecting the mass of the column assuming the
Young’s modulus of reinforce concrete as 4 x 106psi, determine the following:
i) the natural frequency and the natural time period of transverse vibration of the
water tank
ii) the vibration response of the water tank due to an initial transverse displacement
of 10 in.
iii) the maximum values of the velocity and acceleration experienced by the water
tank

i. Three springs and a mass are attached to a rigid weightless bar PQ as shown below .
Find the natural frequency of vibration of the system

ii. A simply supported beam of square cross section 5 mm x 5 mm and length 1 m,
carrying a mass of 2.3 kg at the middle, is found have a natural frequency of
transverse vibration of 30 rad/s. Determine the Young’s modulus of elasticity of the
beam.
iii. An electrical switch gear is supported by a crane through a steel cable of length 4 m
and diameter 0.01 m. If the natural time period of the axial vibration of the switch
gear is found to be 0.01 s, find the mass of the switch gear

ii) Determine the period of oscillation of a simple pendulum having a mass m=5kg
and a length l=0.5m
ii. Find the equation of motion of the uniform rigid bar OA of length l and mass m
shown in the figure. Also find its natural frequency

4) An under damped shock absorber is to be design for a motorcycle of mass 200 kg. When
the shock absorber is subjected to an initial vertical velocity due to a road bump, the
resulting displacement-time curve is to be as shown. Find the necessary stiffness and
damping constants of the shock absorber if the damped period is to be 2 s and the

amplitude x1 is to be reduced to one fourth in one half cycle ( i.e., x 1.5 = x1/4 ). Also find
the minimum initial velocity that leads to a maximum displacement of 250 mm

500N/m m=2kg x0=0.1m and 𝑥 ̈ =5m/s
ii. An automobile having a mass of 2000kg deflects its suspension springs 0.02m under
static conditions. Determine the natural frequency of the automobile in the vertical
direction assuming damping to be negligible.
iii. Derive the equation of motion of the system shown below , using the following
methods
i) Newtonian method
ii) Energy method

is the undamped natural frequency of the system.Find the equation of motion for the
system ,when damping ratio( 𝜍) are given as follows

(3) 𝜍 = 0.2
ii. A rail road bumper is designed as a spring in parallel with a viscous damper .What is
the bumper’s damping coefficient such that the system has a damping ratio of 1.25,
when the bumper is engaged by a rail car of 20,000kg mass. The stiffness of the

spring is 2E5N/m. If the rail car engages the bumper, while travelling at a speed of
20m/s, what is the maximum deflection of the bumper?

i. A gun barrel of mass 500kg has a recoil spring of stiffness 300,000N/m.If the barrel
recoils 1.2metres on firing, determine
(1) Initial velocity of nthe barrel
(2) Critical damping coeeficient of the dashpot which is engaged at the end of the
recoil stroke
(3) Time required for the barrel to return to a position 50mm from the initial
position

ii. An air compressor of mass 450kg operates at a constant speed of 1750rpm with all the
rotating parts being balanced. The reciprocating parts have a mass of 10kg at an
effective crank radius of 100 mm. the compressor is mounted through mountings
which introduces a damping ratio =0.15
i. Find the stiffness of these damped vibration if only 20 % of vibrating
force is to be transmitted to the ground
ii. What is the amplitude of this force
iii. If the transmitted force was to be reduced to 10% by additions of isolation
mass , what would be the value of this mass

iii. Logarithmic decrement
iv. If the mass is initially at rest and is given a velocity of 10cm/sec then
calculate the amplitude of vibration after 5 oscillations

i. A weight 55 N suspended by a spring of stiffness 1.1kN/m is forced to vibrate by a
harmonic force of 9N. Assuming viscous damping coefficient c=77Nsec/m ,Find :
i. The resonant frequency
ii. The amplitude at the resonance
iii. The phase angle at the resonance
iv. Frequency corresponding to the peak amplitude
v. Peak amplitude, and
vi. The phase angle corresponding to peak amplitude
ii. Calculate the steady state response of the mass shown in Fig Q 9 After one second, if
an exciting force F(t)=10sin15t acts on the mass(10mks)

10) A machine of mass 100kg is mounted through four similar mountings each of which
experiences linear elasticity and viscous damping. When the machine is given a vertical
displacement and let go it is found to execute free damped oscillations such that the time
to complete ten oscillations is 15 seconds and the ratio of the first to the third amplitude is
1.5. Determine
iv. The stiffness of each mounting
v. The damping coefficient of each mounting
vi. If the machine was to be constrained by addition of viscous dampers.
What will be the damping coefficient of these dampers?
