DSP Assignment

1) Determine the system function H(z), impulse response h(n), and difference equation of an LTI system with a given input/output. Also determine if the system is stable and causal. 2) Consider an LTI system with a given pole-zero diagram. Determine if the inverse system can be both causal and stable. 3) Consider an LTI system with a given difference equation. Determine the possible impulse responses and identify which corresponds to a stable system and which is causal.

DSP-Assignment - 1

1 𝑛
1. When the input to an LTI system is 𝑥(𝑛) = (2) 𝑢(𝑛) + 2𝑛 𝑢(−𝑛 − 1), the output is
1 𝑛 3 𝑛
𝑦(𝑛) = 6 (2) 𝑢(𝑛) + 6 (4) 𝑢(𝑛)
a) Determine the system function H(z) of the system. Plot the poles and Zeros of H(Z)
and indicate the ROC.
b) Determine the impulse response h(n) of the system for all values of n.
c) Write the difference equation that characterizes the system.
d) Is the system stable? Is it causal?
2. If the system function H(z) of an LTI system has a pole zero diagram as shown in figure
and the system is causal, can the inverse system 𝐻𝑖 (𝑧), where H(Z) 𝐻𝑖 (𝑧)=1, be both causal
and stable? Clearly justify your answer.

3. Consider an LTI system with input x(n) and output y(n) for which 𝑦(𝑛 − 1) − 2 𝑦(𝑛) +
𝑦(𝑛 + 1) = 𝑥(𝑛)
The system may or may not be stable or casual. By considering the pole zero pattern
associated with this difference equation, determine three possible choices for the impulse
response of the system. Show that each choices satisfies the difference equation. Indicate
which choice corresponds to a stable system and which choice corresponds to a causal
system.
4. A discrete time causal LTI system has the system function.
(1 + 0.2𝑧 −1 )(1 − 9𝑧 −1 )
ℎ(𝑧) =
(1 + 0.81𝑧 −2 )
a) Is the system stable?
b) Determine expressions for minimum phase system 𝐻1 (𝑧) and all pass system 𝐻𝑎𝑝 (𝑧)
such that
𝐻(𝑧) = 𝐻1 (𝑧) 𝐻𝑎𝑝 (𝑧)
5. Suppose the causal LTI system has an impulse response of length 6, as shown in figure,
where c is real valued constant. Which of the following is true?
a) This system must be minimum phase.
b) This system cannot be minimum phase.
c) This system may or may not be minimum phase, depending on the value of c.
