Tutorial BC

This document contains 4 practice problems about basic vector concepts in engineering mechanics including: 1) Adding and subtracting vectors graphically to find their magnitude and angle relative to the x-axis. 2) Finding the angle and unit vector of a vector. 3) Adding, subtracting and multiplying vectors represented on a figure to find their magnitude, angle and unit vector. 4) Performing arithmetic operations on quantities with different significant figures and expressing the answer to the correct precision.

Tutorial: Basic Concepts

1. i) Determine the magnitude of the vector sum V = V1 + V2 and the angle  x which V makes
with the positive x-axis.
ii) Determine the magnitude of the vector difference V’ = V2 - V1 and the angle  x which V’
makes with the positive x-axis.

2. Find the angles made by the vector V = -36i + 15j with the positive x- and y-axes. Write the
unit vector n in the direction of V.

3. For the vectors V1 and V2 shown in Figure Q3,

i) determine magnitude of the vector sum S = V1 + V2,
ii) determine the angle between S and the positive x-axis,
iii) write S in vector form and then write a unit vector n along the vector S,
iv) determine the vector difference D = V1 - V2

4. Suppose that two non-dimensional quantities are exactly A = 8.67 and B = 1.429. Using the
rules for significant figures, express the four quantities
i) A + B
ii) A - B
iii) AB
iv) A/B
