• equipment malfunction
• equipment repairs
A person cannot detect an electrical charge of less than 3,500 V, but 30 V can cause damage to components in the
equipment.
Preventive Measures
• Check for an ESD WARNING LABEL before doing any procedure with ESD-sensitive components. All sensitive
components have graphic LABELS that frequently include instructions. Use all label instructions.
• Wear a GROUNDING STRAP when you touch ESD-sensitive components. Check that the CLIP remains
fastened to a ground that has a clean surface with no paint.
• Repair components in an ESD-protection area or use a PORTABLE GROUNDING MAT.
• When moving ESD-sensitive components from area to area, insert and transport the components in the special
material made for the transport of these components.

Subsystem Description
SCANNER: Document Transport, Monitoring, • Automatically feeds documents through the PAPER
and Control TRANSPORT system.
• Detects the leading and trailing edge of a document.
• Controls the MOTORS for the SCANNER and the FLATBED.
SCANNER: Image Processing • Uses a SCAN MODULE that changes the light reflected from
the document to analog signals that represent pixels and
then changes the analog signals to digital signals.
• Provides de-skewing, border removal, and color and
grayscale processing.
• Compresses and stores the image.
Power Distribution • SCANNER obtains power from an EXTERNAL 60 W
POWER SUPPLY.
• Includes the Energy Star SYSTEM that keeps power use low
with a “Sleep” mode.
User Interface Administrator Configuration The Administrator Configuration Application is used to make a
Application configuration file to be loaded on the SCANNER.
User Interface TOUCH SCREEN and The Touch Screen interface is used for an input device without
KEYPAD the need of a FLASH PEN to configure desired input and output
preferences, formats and destinations.
USB 2.0 All interface controls for the SCAN STATION 700 / 710 / 720EX /
730EX are used through the internal USB Bus, including the
SCANNER and FLASH PENS.

SERVICE MANUAL
Image Delivery
[1] After the image data is compiled, the image is temporarily written to the internal HARD DRIVE within the SCAN
STATION 700 / 710 / 720EX / 730EX.
[2] Based on the user’s pre-selected requirements, the digital document is then transported through one or more
of the output methods.
Electronics Configuration
The electronics of the SCAN STATION 700 / 710 / 720EX / 730EX are divided into 3 main components: the
ELECTRONIC AY, OPERATOR CONTROL PANEL (OCP) AY, and SCANNER AY.

Theory
The MOTHERBOARD is an off-the shelf BOARD that provides all image processing, temporary image storage, and
distribution through the user Network and USB CONTROLLERS. The BOARD changes frequently. For
specifications, see the Web site for the manufacturer of the BOARD.
Caution
Possible risk of explosion if replacement of the BATTERY is the wrong type. You must discard used BATTERIES by
following the instructions.
For California USA Only: The battery may have perchlorate material that exceeds the limit for California. Special
handling may apply. See www.dtsc.ca.gov/hazardouswaste/perchlorate.
Component Description
HEAT SINK Provides required cooling to the CPU.
CPU CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT.
Memory Memory slots for a total of 2 GB DDR3-SD RAM.
Power Connections • Input power connection.
• Input +12 V power connection.
LVDS Connection Provides video signals to LVDS Display via the MOTHERBOARD.
Backlight Power for LCD Provide power to the LCD BOARD for backlight of the DISPLAY BOARD.
RJ45 Ethernet Provides internal Ethernet connectivity to the RJ45/USB BOARD to the back of
the SCAN STATION 700 / 710 / 720EX / 730EX.
USB interface Provides 4 external USB connections through the back of the SCAN STATION
700 / 710 / 720EX / 730EX.
HARD DRIVE Connection Provides IDE interface to the HARD DRIVE.
Lithium BATTERY 3 V DC Stores BIOS volatile RAM configuration information for the main computer.
POWER SUPPLY
The POWER SUPPLY provides 24 V DC to the POWER / DISTRIBUTION BOARD of the SCAN STATION
700 / 710 / 720EX / 730EX. The interface is through CONNECTOR CN18, which also receives power good signal
from the main CPU on CN18 -14. If the “Signal Good” value is not met, the main POWER SUPPLY will de-energize.
CONNECTOR CN12 provides an additional 12 V DC to the main MOTHERBOARD to operate the USB devices and
the power for the LCD DISPLAY.

HARD DRIVE
The HARD DRIVE is a standard 2.5 in., 320 or 500 GB IDE drive, which is pre-loaded with an embedded application
software that provides all the SCAN STATION 700 / 710 / 720EX / 730EX boot information, system functionality, and
required application software. The HARD DRIVE is also used for a temporary storage device while the images are
scanned, managed, and then transferred through the user’s Network or other output devices. The JUMPERS on the
HARD DRIVE are all left blank or open for default master selection by the main computer. The HARD DRIVE is easy
to remove.
OCP AY
The OCP AY includes the user interfaces for the SCAN STATION 700 / 710 / 720EX / 730EX. It provides the
Graphical User Video display, which includes the LCD DISPLAY and a BACKLIGHT for visual representation, a
TOUCH SCREEN for user input, a SOFT KEYPAD for user input, and a USB connection for internal communications.
Component Description
KEYPAD CONTROL BOARD Provides interface between KEYPAD and USB Bus.
LCD Display Provides user graphical display.
LVDS CONTROL BOARD Provides interface for LVDS video signal between the MOTHERBOARD and the
LCD DISPLAY MODULE.
TOUCH SCREEN Provides user input for making a selection on the DISPLAY MODULE.
OCP BOARD Provides interface from the TOUCH SCREEN to the USB Bus.
