PLAN OF INVESTIGATION.
The group’s theme is “ABUSE” and my subtopic is EMOTIONAL ABUSE.
I chose this topic because I want to help the children and youths who are the most
vulnerable to all forms of violence: physical, sexual and emotional. Child abuse and
neglect can have serious, long-lasting negative effects on children's and youths'
development, their mental health, including their ability to learn. Emotional abuse
(or psychological abuse) is a pattern of behaviour that impairs a child's emotional
development or sense of self-worth. This may include constant criticism, threats or
rejection, as well as withholding love, support or guidance. Emotional abuse is
often difficult to prove, and child protection agencies may not be able to intervene
without evidence of harm or mental injury to the child. Emotional abuse is almost
always present when other types of maltreatment are identified. Emotional abuse
is any type of abuse that involves the continual emotional mistreatment of a child.
It's sometimes called psychological abuse. Emotional abuse can involve
deliberately trying to scare, humiliate, isolate or ignore a child.
Emotional abuse is often a part of other kinds of abuse, which means it can be
difficult to spot the signs or tell the difference, though it can also happen on its
own.
Some signs of emotional abuse may include:
1. Lack of confidence and self-esteem.
2. Difficulties controlling emotions.
3. Extreme behaviour, like becoming overly demanding, aggressive, having outbursts,
or becoming passive.
4. Difficulties making and maintaining relationships.
5. Behaviour that is inappropriately infantile or adult-like.
This research will benefit me by being able to notice when a student or friend who
needs help or is suffering from emotional abuse and is too afraid to speak up. Also
I’ve experienced this before and I don’t ever want anyone to go through that. The
underlying goal of emotional abuse is to control the victim by discrediting,
isolating, and silencing. In the end, the victim feels trapped. They are often too
wounded to endure the relationship any longer, but also too afraid to leave.
Emotional and psychological abuse can have severe short- and long-term effects.
This type of abuse can affect both your physical and your mental health. You may
experience feelings of confusion, anxiety, shame, guilt, frequent crying, over-
compliance, powerlessness, and more.
The cycle of emotional abuse is made up of four stages. These stages include the
building of tension, the abuse incident, the reconciliation, and a period of calm.
Angry and abusive partners tend to be anxious by temperament. From the time
they were children, they've had a sense of dread that things will go badly and that
they will fail to cope. They try to control their environment to avoid feelings of
failure and inadequacy.
I plan to collect my information on the internet and also using book resources.
The info will be used in my oral presentation by expressing the knowledge and
understanding I gathered from all of my research on this topic.
