DUMPSITE AT PAPANDAYAN CANIOGAN M.

DUMPSITE is a piece of land where waste materials are dumped. Designated for dumping rubbish,

garbage, or other sorts of solid wastes.  Historically, they are the most common means of disposing solid waste

which is either buried or left to pile in heaps.

The landfill in Papandayan Caniogan, Marawi City was estimated to have started more than 20 years

ago according to the people who works there. It was originally located in Dulay but due to many complaints it

was transferred here in Papandayan Caniogan. They used the land of Decampong’s for they had agreed to it. It

became the main source of income of some families, family of those who works in collecting garbage. The

income every month of each driver of the trucks, trucks that is used in collecting garbage, is 15,000 pesos and

as for those who works with the driver receive 10,000 a month each. For those who collect plastics, metals or

anything that can be sold can save money up to 200 pesos a day.

CAUSES

Garbage here in Papandayan Caniogan, Marawi city is one of the biggest problem of the citizens of the

said place. But who should be blame?

Every person is responsible of this issue because they are the one who create the waste and as a

consequence, it harms the lives of animal and human beings. One of the cause of this dumpsite is the waste

disposal in homes, schools, restaurants, public places, markets, offices and so on produce a great deal of

rubbish, garbage and used materials. The bulk of these wastes eventually end up in the dumpsite. Also one of

the cause is the over population.

Soil, water, and air pollution can all be a result of improper waste disposal and occurs when either of

them becomes contaminated with hazardous materials. Not only does this contribute to the creation of a

greenhouse effects but also causes a significant harm to marine and wildlife. Apart from this improper waste

disposal can also adverse health effects on humans as over the years it has been responsible for causing several

diseases and is some cases even death.


EFFECTS

The people lives near the dumpsite, it brings bad odor, negative health impact, and negative

environmental impact by bringing the stinky smell and polluted air and the people lives there. Some of them got

a common illness like cough and influenza. A 13 years old young woman suffered a severe headache because

the dumpsite was smelly for three consecutive days. Landfill waste increases the risk of severe health

implications such as birth defects, low birth weight, and particular cancers. Other discomfort symptoms for

people living next to the landfills include sleepiness, headaches, and fatigue.

Literally garbage is bad because it is a big threat to human and animal health. Some people burn it to

reduce the mess but they didn’t know that they are just creating another problem because burning garbage are

polluting the environment and one of the outcomes of garbage is air pollution

CONCLUSION

There are several waste management methods. These methods differ from one nation to another. It also

differs from industrial and residential areas. Whichever the case, waste management is usually the responsibility

of the local government. Industries can also manage their wastes; in case they are non-hazardous. The methods

of waste management involve landfills, incineration or combustion, 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), plasma

gasification, composting, and waste to energy (Recover Energy)

3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) and composting are a couple of the best methods of waste management.

Composting is so far only possible on a small scale, either where waste can be mixed with farming soil or used

for landscaping purposes. Recycling is widely used around the world, with plastic, paper, and metal leading the

list of the most recyclable items. Most material recycled is reused for its original purpose.
RECOMMENDATION

Maintaining the cleanliness indoors and outdoors, practicing the segregation of waste as for the

household residents to lessen the primary roots of the garbage. while for the secondary roots which is the

markets, hospitals, restaurants, public places etc. adapt and perform the segregation of garbage since

they were one of the huge source of the waste.

For the officials of the barangay they have to conduct a workshop or seminar regarding the cause

and impact of waste dump and waste management.

As for the students they were lead to segregate their waste at home, eventually homes are mainly

source of waste.

INTERVIEWS
According to the people who works in the landfill, there is no one who mainly got sick because of it for

their bodies are immune in the waste because they grew up working there. Some says that the children, who

works at the landfill, get sick if they have not work in the waste dump for three days, they even joke that it was

their health maintenance. And as for those rumored people that got sick because of it was not the whole truth,

for it was only the partial reason why their disease got worsen. There were also some accidents happened in the

landfill like falling from the truck, slipping in the waste dump, etc.

According to those who live near the dumpsite, they always get irritated because of the foul smell

produced by the dumpsite. They suffer from headache, stomachache, cough, cold, dengue and even erysipelas

because of its smell and polluted air. There were some cases that it is the worsen why their disease got worsen,

like asthma, that cause their death.

Although there were a lot of people who complain against the landfill waste because of its smell, there

were a lot of people also who are against to get rid of the landfill waste for it is there source of income. There

were a lot of illiterate or those who had not finished their education that lives in Papandayan Caniogan and

made the landfill waste as their source of money.
