The Contact

An Oliver Jukes FMP

SCENE 1 - EXT. FIELD - DAY
The field is empty other than a body lying face up in the
middle. The trees wave as the wind whistles through. The body
sits up suddenly. He rubs his head before wincing and checking
his hand for blood. He checks again before freezing. He looks
around confused. He glances to the side to see a notepad. He
looks up, there's no one around. He reaches for the notepad,
pauses midway, then picks it up. He flips through the pages,
unsure of what he expects to find, it is full of drawings and
notes in unreadable handwriting, he places it down again. He
adjusts how he is sitting using his arms to lift himself up, his
legs not quite working. He holds his side trying to stop an
ache. He pauses feeling something. He reaches into an inside
pocket and pulls out a phone. The phone screen appears on
screen.

Text: Recent calls: 33 minutes ago: unknown

He presses call back. The phone rings. No answer. He slowly

struggles to get to his feet before walking off into the
distance. The camera tilts up

TITLE: The Contact

Text: Written and Directed by Oliver Jukes

The camera tilts back down. There is now a single obscured

figure in the middle facing away from the camera. The figure is
wearing a long dark coat with a hoodie, mask and sunglasses
hiding their identity. The figure bends down. The figure looks
around the ground then looks around the field. The figure stands
up straight, pauses and then walks around the field. He pulls
out his phone and dials someone. The phone rings for a few
seconds before a response.

MASKED FIGURE
(Muffled through the mask)
He’s awake

PHONE VOICE
Good
The masked figure starts pacing nervously.

MASKED FIGURE
He found it though

PHONE VOICE
Then fix it

MASKED FIGURE
What if he has questions

PHONE VOICE
Dont tell him anything

MASKED FIGURE
He’ll be persistent though

PHONE VOICE
Just do what you need to do

MASKED FIGURE
Will he ever find out

PHONE VOICE
Hopefully not

The figure stops pacing and lowers his phone and types a
message. He then walks away

SCENE 2 - __T. ________ - DAY

The protagonist sits alone flipping through the notepad, it is

full of weird notes, formulas and drawings. He frowns confused.
His phone gets a notification. The message appears on screen.

Text: I know what happened, meet me here (51.537764,-0.904003),

tomorrow, at midday.

The protagonist looks unsure before he stands up and leaves.

Scene 3 - EXT. field - day

The same field as before. The protagonist stands in the middle,
alone. He paces around. He looks around, down at his phone, then
back around again. After a few seconds he checks his phone,
nothing. His arm drops to his side, he continues pacing. After a
few more seconds he finds the number and puts the phone to his
ear. It rings a few times, no one answers. The masked figure
appears behind him. The protagonist notices and turns to face
him. The two stand a distance apart. The masked figure stands
still and almost motionless. The protagonist takes a step
forward.

THE PROTAGONIST
Are you the one from the message?

No response

THE PROTAGONIST
(CONT.)
Are you?

No response

THE PROTAGONIST
(CONT.)
I'm here, now please tell me what is going on.

MASKED FIGURE
(Muffled through the mask)
Do you have the notepad

THE PROTAGONIST
What is happening to me

MASKED FIGURE
(firmly)
Do you have the notepad

THE PROTAGONIST
Why can I not remember what happened yesterday

MASKED FIGURE
Just give me the notepad

THE PROTAGONIST
Please. I woke up yesterday with no clue how I got there and all
I know is that you called me 30 minutes before.

Still nothing, the protagonist is very frustrated now

THE PROTAGONIST
(CONT.)
Come on. You may be the only way I can ever work out what
happened to me. You have the ability to allow me to work out
what happened, you are able to allow me to move on with my life.
Please, I'm begging you to allow me to move on. I just want to
forget all of this and go on with my life. Just help me out and
I'll give you the notepad and then you never have to see me
again. Allow me to move on!

They both pause for a few seconds

MASKED FIGURE
You won't.

THE PROTAGONIST
What?

Silence again

THE PROTAGONIST
(CONT.)
What did you say?

MASKED FIGURE
You won't.

THE PROTAGONIST
I won’t what?

MASKED FIGURE
Move on.
THE PROTAGONIST
How can you know that (BEAT) i'm not asking if you can help me
out here, i'm asking if you can help me work out why I have no
memory of yesterday other than waking up in a field with nothing
but an empty notepad and a phone with your number in it and a
contact history showing that you called me just before… before
something happened.

MASKED FIGURE
You dont want to know.

THE PROTAGONIST
That's not for you to decide.

MASKED FIGURE
(firmly)
You dont want to know.

THE PROTAGONIST
Why do you get to decide what's best for me, you dont know me?

MASKED FIGURE
I know you better than you think, and I know how you’ll react.

THE PROTAGONIST
React to what?

MASKED FIGURE
Stop.

THE PROTAGONIST
No, I have a right to know what has happened to me and you are
hiding something from me for no reason.

MASKED FIGURE
Just give me the notepad.

THE PROTAGONIST
Why?

MASKED FIGURE
Just give me the notepad so we can never see eachother again.

THE PROTAGONIST
What do you mean never see eachother again? I dont even know who
you are.

MASKED FIGURE
You dont need to know who I am. You also dont want to know.

THE PROTAGONIST
Again with the claiming to know what I dont want.

MASKED FIGURE
Just give me the notepad and forget that anything happened.

THE PROTAGONIST
(Exasperated)
Forget that what happened? I dont even know what's going on!

MASKED FIGURE
(Also exasperated)
Just give me the notepad.

The protagonist realises their leverage

THE PROTAGONIST
Not until you give me what I want (BEAT) I will give you the
notepad if you tell me what is happening (BEAT) and you know
what? You're also going to tell me what this means.

The protagonist pulls out and holds up the notepad. The masked
figure pulls out a futuristic looking gun from a holster that
has been hidden. The protagonist looks surprised.

MASKED FIGURE
(firmly)
Give it to me.

THE PROTAGONIST
Just tell me what is happening to me!
MASKED FIGURE
(slightly angry)
Hand it over!

THE PROTAGONIST
(also angry)
Tell me what is happening!

MASKED FIGURE
Hand it over, now!

THE PROTAGONIST
What's happening?

They both pause, eyeing eachother up, evenly matched, waiting.

The masked figure gives in first, lowering his gun. The
prtagonist is wary but slowly lowers the notepad.

MASKED FIGURE
Are you sure, once I tell you your life will change, I can
promise you.

THE PROTAGONIST
I'm sure.

The masked figure sighs. The protagonist prepares himself. They

stare at eachother before the masked figure replaces his gun.
The protagonist replaces the notepad. The masked figure removes
his hood, removes his sunglasses and lowers his mask, revealing
himself as identical to the protagonist.

Shot: Dolly zoom

They both stay silent for a few seconds processing everything.

MASKED FIGURE
See I told you this wouldnt help.

The protagonist is speechless

MASKED FIGURE
(CONT.)
You good there?

THE PROTAGONIST
(Unsure)
Not really.

MASKED FIGURE
I told you.

THE PROTAGONIST
So… what does this mean?

He gestures at the now unmasked man

MASKED FIGURE
Well… you are a clone.

THE PROTAGONIST
Right…

MASKED FIGURE
Now can I have the notepad?

THE PROTAGONIST
No… you’ve answered who you are but what about why I can't
remember much

MASKED FIGURE
God’s sake, ok, i'll explain everything, so…

The masked figure puts his sunglasses back on, the camera moves
forward and through the sunglasses.

Transition to:

SCENE 4 - MONTAGE - BLACK AND WHITE

A montage plays showing what the masked figure is describing.

Cut to: a glass of a liquid is placed down

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
You are a science experiment, gone wrong.

Cut to: drops of a coloured liquid are added to the liquid

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
I mean not technically gone wrong, the science stuff went right,

Cut to: the liquid is mixed together

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
I was the one who messed up.

Cut to:

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
Normally this stuff goes well

Cut to:

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
Someone creates you

Cut to:

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
They implant fake memories

Cut to: the two walk into the field

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
I bring you to the field
Cut to: the masked figure bending down in the field holding a
silver piece of technolgy, there is a pause then a flash of
light and a click sound.

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
then I remove the last day from your memory

Cut to: he walks away, the protagonist lies still in the same
spot as the opening.

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
Then I leave you there.

THE PROTAGONIST
(V.O.)
(interrupting quickly)
Why?

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
I can't say.

THE PROTAGONIST
(V.O.)
How many times have you done this?

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
I can't remember.

THE PROTAGONIST
(V.O.)
(sighs) ok then, so what went wrong this time?

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
Well…

Cut to: the masked figure crouching over the protagonist

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
Everything had gone well,

Cut to: he stands up

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
Everything went to plan

Cut to: he turns a walks off

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
And I thought it was all fine

Cut to: he has left the field and feels his pocket to find no
notepad, he groans and looks annoyed at himself.

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
Until later on, when I realized I had forgotten my notepad

Cut to: the protagonist leaving the field, seen through trees
and from a distance.

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
Before I could get back you had woken up and left.

Cut to: the masked figure again, walking out from the trees
pulling up his mask.

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
So I checked if you had not seen the notepad.

Cut to: the shot from the first scene of him looking around

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
But you had already found it and tried the number.

Cut to: The shot from scene 1 of him on the phone being told
what to do.

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
So I decided to contact you so you could give it back.

Cut to: the shot from scene 1 of him lowering the phone and
sending a message.

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
And I hoped you hadnt read it or understood it.

Cut to: The shot from scene one of him walking away from the
field.

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O.)
I hoped you didnt know, I wanted to spare you from learning the
truth about what you are.

SCENE 5 - EXT. A PARK BENCH - DAY

The two sit next to eachother on a bench. The bench is in front

of trees and hills and is private. The protagonist is looking at
the masked figure annoyed at him.

THE PROTAGONIST
Right, so you then contacted me, we met eachother at the field,
now what? (BEAT) what now?

MASKED FIGURE
You give me the notepad and move on with your life.

THE PROTAGONIST
Move on? Move on?
MASKED FIGURE
Yes.

THE PROTAGONIST
Youre telling me to just move on? After finding out my life
doesnt matter. After finding out that my life is pointless.

MASKED FIGURE
Your life isnt pointless.

THE PROTAGONIST
Isnt it?

MASKED FIGURE
No, it's up to you now to try to find a way to deal with it.

THE PROTAGONIST
How?

MASKED FIGURE
That's for you to work out. (BEAT) you know what? Let's meet
here next week and we’ll talk again, see how you're doing.

THE PROTAGONIST
Sure.

The protagonist stands up and walks out. The masked figure sits
alone for a few seconds before picking up his phone and dialing
a number.

PHONE VOICE
(V.O.)
Have you retrieved it?

MASKED FIGURE
Not yet, I'll have it next week.

PHONE VOICE
(V.O.)
You had better.
He hangs up and sits motionless for a few seconds before getting
up and leaving
Fade out

SCENE 6 - EXT. BRIDGE - DAY

Fade in
The protagonist enters from the left and slowly walks to the
middle of the bridge and stands leaning against the side, he
blinks quickly trying to wake himself up. His face is
expressionless as he looks down over the bridge. He turns and
continues walking right.

SCENE 7 - EXT. A PARK BENCH - DAY

The protagonist walks in and sits down next to the masked

figure. They sit in silence waiting to see who is going to talk
first.

MASKED FIGURE
So, how do you feel?

THE PROTAGONIST
Not great (BEAT), but i’ll keep trying

The masked figure nods solemnly.

THE PROTAGONIST
(CONT.)
Well, see you around.

MASKED FIGURE
Probably best not to

THE PROTAGONIST
Yeah probably

Both sit silently processing everything. The protagonist pulls

out the notepad and hands it over then gets up and leaves. The
masked figure watches him leave, then he pockets the notepad and
waits a moment before pulling out his phone out of his pocket
and dialing a number.

MASKED FIGURE
Ive got it

PHONE VOICE
Good. What did you tell him?

MASKED VOICE
That he's a clone.

Cut to:

The other side of the phone call. The phone voice is standing in
a dark room lit mostly by his phone which is up to his ear.

PHONE VOICE
What about the others?

MASKED FIGURE
(V.O)
He doesnt know

PHONE VOICE
Good.

He lowers the phone to chest height to hang up. His face is lit
for a moment before he puts the phone down. In the moment his
face is lit it is clear he is another clone.
