For the new RX 450h we challenged
ourselves with creating the best, most
innovative, luxury crossover ever built a car
engineered without compromise, and capable
of resetting benchmarks for performance,
comfort and craftsmanship. We started by
designing a bold new Lexus ‘face’ with class
leading aerodynamics. Next, our engineers
developed the innovative Lexus Hybrid
Drive. Equipped with advanced technologies
like Remote Touch and available with an
F SPORT model the new RX 450h is
extraordinarily enjoyable to drive. To achieve
this, we drove countless laps on the gruelling
Nürburgring racetrack, proving quite literally
that we don’t stop until we create amazing.

The first RX crossover, introduced in 1998,
broke new ground by combining the fun and
flexibility of a Sports Utility Vehicle with the
handling and refinement of a luxury saloon.
Later, in 2004, we pioneered the world’s
first premium hybrid, the breakthrough
RX 400h crossover. We now introduce the
new RX 450h, which combines dynamic
performance with the lowest CO2 emissions
in its class. Built at the Lexus ‘Eco Factory’
in Kyushu, Japan, the latest RX is destined
to reset benchmarks for driving pleasure,
comfort and leading edge refinement.

The RX 450h has been created using a bold, new
version of our L finesse (L = Leading edge) design
language. A dynamic first impression is created
by the elegant new Lexus signature ‘spindle
grille’. Jewel like headlights enhance vision, while
arrowhead shaped LED daytime running lights
underline the crossover’s distinctive look. The sleek
and long cabin section gives powerful presence
and generous inside space. Smooth underbody
covers, air suspension that lowers the car for less
wind resistance, and the integration of the wiper
blade inside the rear spoiler all result in class
leading aerodynamics.

THE POWER OF h
The new RX 450h delivers amazing Full
Hybrid performance, yet is incredibly easy to
drive. Simply press the accelerator to achieve
0 62 mph in only 7.8 seconds, while using
only 44.8 mpg of fuel on the combined
cycle**. Powered by a potent second
generation Lexus Hybrid Drive, this Lexus
intelligently unites a 3.5 litre V6 petrol engine
with two high output electric motors. Push the
EV (Electric Vehicle) button to drive in near
silence, using no petrol and emitting zero CO2
or NOX*. The RX 450h is also practical; the
hybrid battery never needs external charging
and occupies minimum room, resulting in
generous luggage space.

HYBRID DRIVE WORK?

1 / Start up, driving off When starting off, the powerful electric motor can propel
the RX 450h up to 25 mph with electric power supplied by the hybrid battery.
At this point the vehicle is almost silent, uses no petrol and produces zero emissions*.
2 / Normal driving conditions At speeds above 25 mph the ultra smooth 3.5 litre V6
direct injection Atkinson Cycle petrol engine cuts in, almost silently, but still receives assistance
from the electric motor when required.
3 / Full throttle acceleration Accelerate and the powerful electric motors instantaneously
supplement the 3.5 litre 249 DIN hp V6 petrol engine. Together they deliver a surge of torque for
fast linear acceleration precisely when you need it.
4 / Deceleration, stopping, braking When decelerating or coming to a halt, the petrol engine
turns off, cutting emissions to zero. Brake, or take your foot off the accelerator, and regenerative
braking harnesses the kinetic energy lost in other cars. It converts this into electrical energy for storage
in the hybrid battery, which is one reason why you never need to recharge a Lexus Full Hybrid.

SELECT
Drive Mode Select allows you to choose between modes, to maximise either the car’s
efficiency or dynamic abilities.
1 / ECO / EV Mode In ECO mode, engine output, gear selection, air conditioning and
heated seats are controlled to reduce fuel consumption. Select EV (Electric Vehicle) mode,
and the RX 450h Full Hybrid provides a near silent drive, using no petrol and emitting
zero CO2 or NOX*. In EV, ECO and NORMAL modes the instruments take on a
tranquil blue colour, and the ecometer encourages you to drive more efficiently.
2 / SPORT Mode If you’re in a dynamic mood, select SPORT mode and the RX
immediately retunes the throttle for rapid acceleration. Switching to SPORT mode
illuminates the instruments in a vibrant red.

Developed in the world’s most advanced
driving simulator, and then tested over
many hundreds of thousands of kilometres,
the new RX 450h handles with all the
poise and precision of our luxury saloons.
Innovative All Wheel Drive technology
delivers superb road holding, particularly
when cornering, and offers confident
traction over rougher terrain. Achieved by
engineering a stiffer chassis and developing
a new double wishbone rear suspension for
less body roll, the RX 450h’s high speed
performance was exhaustively tested on the
world famous Nürburgring in Germany. On
the Premier grade, air suspension provides
an even more refined drive to help achieve a
consistent vehicle height and even lowers the
crossover at higher speeds for reduced wind
resistance. State of the art Vehicle Dynamics
Integrated Management (VDIM) anticipates
difficult situations, making torque and braking
corrections as required.

The new RX 450h F SPORT is dynamic
and fun to drive, with assertive front end
styling, mesh intake grilles and darkened
19 inch alloy wheels. Developed by
an experienced team of Lexus ‘Drive
Meisters’, the RX 450h F SPORT offers an
incredibly precise and engaging drive. The
F SPORT model is fitted with front and rear
performance dampers to increase handling
stability, while SPORT mode offers more
responsive acceleration. Inside, the cockpit
features leather sports seats with perforations
and white stitching, aluminium pedals,
metallic inlay panels and scuff plates; with
the steering wheel and gearshift finished in
perforated leather.

The tranquil cabin of the RX 450h will keep
you relaxed and entertained, even on the
longest journeys. The sumptuous driver’s
seat offers extensive electric adjustments. For
ease of entry, the seat slides back 50 mm
and the steering wheel retracts. Rear seats
slide, tilt or fold too. Exquisitely stitched leather
seating is standard. Gentle ambient lighting
illuminates the start button and gearshift, and
storage compartments open and close with
the calming motion of a traditional Japanese
sliding door. RX 450h quality is overseen
by ‘Takumi’ master craftspeople, and before
delivery every car is tested for leaks in a
high pressure water chamber that simulates a
tropical typhoon.

Extensively tested in Arctic and desert
conditions, the RX 450h cabin warms up
as quickly as it cools down, while a special
filter system reduces pollen, diesel particles
and dust. Fitted as standard, the powerful
air conditioning features independent
control zones that distribute clean air
quietly and efficiently throughout the cabin.
Precise temperatures are maintained by a
variety of sensors. So, if sunshine warms the
upper body of driver or passengers, upper
and lower temperatures are automatically
controlled to compensate. The air conditioning
is powered electrically by the hybrid battery, so
you can stay comfortable with the engine off.

The new RX 450h is available with a 9, 12

or 15 speaker stereo. For the breathtaking
top of the range sound system, which is fitted
as standard on the Premier grade, Lexus
and Mark Levinson spent many hundreds of
hours perfecting it in the lab and on the road.
The resulting superlative performance has
been achieved by matching the system’s 15
custom engineered loudspeakers with the
particular acoustic characteristics of the cabin
and their location within it. Because of this,
passengers enjoy unparalleled 7.1 channel
surround sound for their favourite CD or
DVD. All RX 450h models have an auxiliary
input and USB port for iPods® or other
media players.

Featuring an array of advanced safety features
and world first innovations, the new RX 450h
is an extraordinarily safe car in which to travel.
An optional Pre Crash Safety System uses
millimetre wave radar to detect objects in
front of the vehicle. If a high risk situation is
determined, it warns you and activates Pre
Crash Brake Assist. If a collision is then deemed
unavoidable, Pre Crash Brake and Pre Crash
Seatbelts are activated within milliseconds.
The ergonomic interior and near silent
cabin of the RX 450h let you concentrate
on the road ahead, while low beam LED
headlights offer extremely focused light. To
help you see around corners, an Intelligent
Adaptive Front lighting System automatically
swivels the headlights into approaching bends
for improved visibility.

The new RX 450h features ten airbags as

standard. The breakthrough twin chamber
front passenger airbag ‘catches’ the occupant
on impact, rather like a large baseball glove.
Knee airbags fitted to both front seats
supplement seatbelts and front airbags,
protecting driver and front seat passenger
in a collision. Curtain shield airbags across
the side windows also inflate automatically
to cushion your head in the unlikely event of
the car rolling over. Finally, in developing the
new RX 450h, we also aimed for the highest
level of impact performance. For maximum
strength, approximately 42% of the car’s
body weight is made up of high tensile steel,
achieving a lightweight yet exceptionally rigid
passenger safety cell.

The supreme quality that defines the new RX 450h

begins at the Kyushu plant where the vehicle is built.
For precision, much of the manufacturing is carried
out by sophisticated robots, supplemented by the
sensory skills of our Takumi master craftspeople. In the
plant, we’ve waged war on dust. Workers wear pocketless,
anti static clothing and wash their shoes before entering the
line. A water screen nicknamed Niagara reduces particles
in the body shop by 90% to avoid imperfections in the painting
process. Gleaming paintwork is produced by hand sanding each
foundation coat (a time consuming process normally reserved for
coach built cars) and is then checked by eye as well as digitally. Finally,
before delivery, every RX 450h undergoes a 30 km evaluation session
by an experienced Lexus test driver.

The new RX 450h offers the cleanest and
most efficient Full Hybrid drivetrain in its class,
with breakthrough aerodynamic refinements.
Everything about the RX 450h is designed to
minimise environmental impact. At the end of
its life, up to 85% of the car can be recycled,
and 95% of the battery can be reused. The
case goes to steel manufacturing, and the
power cells are recycled using an induction
based, vacuum thermal system pioneered by
Lexus. Production at the Kyushu ‘Eco Plant’
is organised using our world famous lean
manufacturing techniques, with waste kept to
an absolute minimum. Each day the plant’s
Aqua Control Centre purifies thousands of
tons of water.

called E FOUR. A light 68 DIN hp electric motor mounted on the rear axle delivers
power instantly when required.
2 / Advanced hybrid battery A high output, nickel metal hydride (Ni MH) 288 V
battery is located under the rear seats. Without compromising interior space or comfort,
the battery is constantly recharged and requires no external charging.
