CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of study

Ewaso Ng’iro South Development Authority was established in 1989 by the act of
parliament cap 447 of the laws of Kenya and started operation in 1999.Currently the
Authorities fall under the ministry of East African Community and regional
Development. ENSDA covers an area of 47,000 sq. kms consisting of Nyandarua,
Kajiado, Nakuru, and Narok counties. It has a diverse geography, cultures, economies
and climatic conditions covering highlands and semi-Arid areas (ASALS). The level of
socioeconomic development is very low yet the region is home to the largest wheat belt
(over 120,000Ha), 50% of the country livestock population, attractive tourist destination,
large tracks of maize fields and 10% of Kenyan population. In this context, there is dire
need to improve livelihoods though resources mobilizations for sustainable
socioeconomic development needs and environmental degradation all of which constitute
challenges.

CHAPTER TWO

DEPARTMENT ATTACHED AND THE ROLES

2.0 Introduction
During my entire attachment period I was attached to Corporate Affairs department
which its roles include the following:

2.1 Management of ICT help desk

Help desk is a service providing information and support to computer users in department
that is responsible help users on technical support. I help users to key in the passwords to
their computers and recover lost and forgotten passwords for them to be able to use it,
users have to surrender in their IDs for them to use the computer and sign the book that
will have details of the user. I was to be able to help users who were not able create their
emails accounts, access mail content and download and print mail attachment files. Also,
I helped Connect PCs to the internet by Ethernet cables for users to access the network
and did network troubleshoot whenever there were internet access problems. Also
assisted in data entry, drawing tables and sending assignments through emails.

2.2. Server room

Server room is a special room dedicated for purpose of housing a server computer and
also has a network cabinet where all the routers, cyber roam (firewall), switch and from
which all the access point are connected. Server runs on windows server 2003 edition.
There at the server room I was able to clip the Ethernet cables, make wire arrangement
according group A or B then have RJ45 and clip, also restart the entire network. Also did
general maintenance by blowing the cabinets using the blower and connect the cables that
were out. Repaired the faulty CPUs, change of RAM and hard disks was also part of the
activities undertaken.

7
2.3 Office
During my attachment period, I happened to be attached at the office where I performed
the e following duties; print some attendance list documents which were used during
different workshops, scan the document at the secretary’s office and send through the
email. Type some official letters for students who had applied for the attachment and
print them

CHAPTER THREE

EVALUATION OF THE ATTACHMENT PERIOD

3.0 Introduction

The entire period of my attachment at ENSDA has been successful since I have acquired
some new skills and implemented theoretical skill leant in class. At the beginning it was
challenging but with time I was able to adjust and cope to the environment. Here are
some skills I acquired and few challenges I encountered.

3.1 Skills and competencies gained

I was able to acquire skills such as;

 IP configuration (Routers, switches and PCs)

Configuration and troubleshooting services (DNS, DHCP).

 Installation of application

Installing some software’s that computers did not have or users wants to use it.

 Formatting and installing new operating system

Installing another operating system to upgrade and make changes

 Setting up the projector

I set up the projector during the workshop due to many events that are mostly held
up at the Boardroom.

9
 Hardware maintenance of computer

During the maintenance I assembled and dissembled the computer parts before blowing it
using the blower and cleansing agent. That I was able to connect back and check what I
was missing inside.

 Clipping Ethernets cables

To have the Ethernets cables you have to categories the group and use RJ45 and clipping
tool.

 Update and upload of website content

Upon new events and projects, eventually I could be asked on updating the website

 Data recovery/retrieval

I was able to interact with data recovery software like photorec and test disk able to
retrieve accidentally lost data through operating system crash, power surge etc.

 Preparation of network reports

Reports on access to internet, access to staff portal and ERP, functionality of LAN, status
of Ethernet cabling networks and general internet connection and utilization.

10
3.2 Challenges encountered during the attachment period

Despite acquiring some skills during my attachment, I also encounter some challenges
like;
 Inadequate office space especially at the authority’s headquarters.
 Financial challenges, which is inadequate funds for personal upkeep.
 Extremely cold weather in the morning hours.
 Few equipment to work with such as computers.
 The current restructuring of RDAs made it hard to access current information and
developments.
 Some projects are located in areas which are inaccessible as they lack the basic
infrastructure.
 Harsh climatic conditions; hot and dusty especially in the field.

3.3 Strategy for utilization of contacts established during the attachment

period

I managed to interact with employees and to get more information about the work place. I
learnt to treat and serve the clients according to their demands. This will help me to
maintain the good relationship with clients and employees and also to bring change in the
company if need be in future. During this time I learnt on effective communication with
staff and clients. A major strategy for job searching is communication whereby one
should be able to speak fluently & effectively during interviews. Team work was very
important in the company since it helps to achieve the desired goals and objectives. It was
a fundamental experience that needs to be employed for one’s success.

11
3.4 Summary and conclusion

Attachment programs are a link between theoretical studies & real-life application
designed to assist student to link up the skill learnt in class with application in the field.
There were a lot of work that needed attention, perseverance and deduction but it was an
enjoyable task to me since it gave me an opportunity to exercise responsibility and also
perform duties that were assigned to me.The company staff gave me full support and
taught me what I needed to learn where and when it was necessary. I am now confident
that I can now fully market as required an expected when put in real job situation.

12
3.4 Recommendations

These recommendations are meant to improve the working conditions of the organization
and organization core objectives. In the view of the challenges and problems highlighted
above, I therefore recommend that:-

The authority creates more space to accommodate the increasing number of staff
especially when attaches and interns are recruited; this can be done by increasing the
number of seats in the respective offices and/or hiring office space as a short run measure
and in future make plans to construct more offices at its headquarters. The authority buys
more equipment’s and tools such as computers to enhance office efficiency as envisaged
in its Office Automation policy document. The Human Resource Department to avail
various policy documents to new staff to help them acquaint with their details properly.
Frequent meetings and interaction between staffs and the management team be arranged
to enhance team work and cohesion in order to enhance and motivate the authority’s
work force. The authority to appreciate and motivate its staff especially those on
attachment and internship by remunerating them at least at the end of the month or the
period they spend at the organization. That the authority devices a staff rewards
programme that will be based on performance and results in order to initiate a culture of
hard work among its staff.
