6.2 What a journey!
| Man: And what about you, Tina? Have you got a story about a
2 journey you remember?
3 Tina: Yes, I have actually. There's one journey I'll never forget. It
4 was about six years ago... I was going to Hong Kong, from
5 London. The flight was early in the morning, so the night
6 before I stayed in a hotel near the airport. Well, I was in a
7 holiday mood that night, and so I went to the hotel bar and
8 ordered a drink, you know, to celebrate. And I got talking to
9 some other people. We had a great time and anyway, when I
10 left the bar it was about three in the morning. The flight was at
1l six o'clock, so it wasn't really worth going to sleep. I watched
12 TV for a bit but, well, I fell asleep, didn't I. When I woke up it
13 was after five o'clock. You know you have to get there early to
14 check in, right? So I panicked, grabbed my bags and rushed
15 outside, looking for a taxi. Of course-no taxis anywhere.
16 Luckily, after a few minutes running up and down the street an
17 airport bus came along so I got on that. When I got there it
18 was actually nearly six so I thought, you know, the gate will be
19 closed. I've missed my plane. The whole terminal was empty
20 except for a huge crowd of people at one end and luckily, that
21 was the queue for my flight. It was delayed! Yeah: I was really
22 pleased but the delay went from one hour, to four hours to
23 finally nine hours! Nine hours waiting in the airport. I slept on
24 some chairs most of the time. Finally, at around three o'clock.
25 the plane took off. But the worst part was yet to come! After a
26 few hours there was a huge storm and the plane started
27 bouncing around all over the place - I remember feeling it was
28 like being in a washing machine. People were screaming.
29babies crying, food flying everywhere. I was really scared. And
30 then! The worst thing of all the oxygen masks dropped
31 down. Suddenly we all were staring at these yellow oxygen
32 masks and the feeling of fear-I just can't describe it. I put my
33 mask on and just sat there in absolute terror, with the plane
34 bouncing all over the place and lightning outside the windows
35 Anyway, the plane didn't crash, thank God, and we got to Hong.
36 Kong OK in the end, but what a journey! I'll never forget it.
