GF Glass Fiber (GF) filters are made of inert borosilicate glass and have a nominal 1.2 μm pore size. They are commonly used with highly viscous
(Glass Fiber) samples or samples containing high concentrations of particulate matter (e.g., food analysis, biological samples, soil samples, fermentation broth
samples, removal of yeasts, molds, etc.).
PVDF Hydrophilic PVDF membrane provides high flow rates and throughput, low extractables, and broad chemical compatibility.
(Polyvinylidene Fluoride) This membrane binds less protein than nylon or PTFE membranes.

media and flow path
For HPLC/UHPLC columns packed with ≤ 3 μm chromatographic media, a Verex Filter Vial
with 0.20 µm filter membrane is recommended. Filter membranes with a 0.20 µm pore size
provides an effective barrier against unwanted particulates entering the system flow path.
vs.
This reduces column plugging, leading to longer column lifetimes and increased system up-
time. For HPLC columns with > 3 μm chromatographic media, a Verex Filter Vial with 0.45 µm
filter membrane is recommended.

The Master Resolution Choosing Your
Equation Selectivity
The Basic Principle of Column Selectivity Has the Biggest
Selection Impact on Resolution
How do you choose a column? Do you reach into a cabinet of Resolution between two analytes is mainly determined by the se-
mystery columns, look to your favorite 5 % phenyl phase, or bor- lectivity of the stationary phase. By increasing the resolution be-
row one from a colleague? Understanding how column paramaters tween two compounds, the total analysis time can often be reduced

The 3 Most Prevalent GC Interactions
The following selection guidelines can be a starting point for choos-
ing Zebron™ columns in common selectivities. Please contact your
Phenomenex representative for additional assistance.
Dipole-Dipole Interactions
• Can cause poor peak shape or irreversible binding to the inlet liner or to the
column itself
• Zebron columns are specially deactivated to minimize these interactions

Choosing Your Dimensions
Length
Longer columns can improve resolution, but they will also increase
run times. Under isothermal conditions, doubling column length
only increases resolution by 41 %, but doubles the run time! Choose
a column length that balances efficiency with acceptable run times.
Short Long
15 m or less Good Starting Length 60 m or more
Applications Applications
• High boilers • Complex samples with closely eluting
• GC-MS applications 30 m peaks
• Low boilers
• Less active samples
Advantages
• Complex temperature ramps
• Faster run times
• Higher temp. limits
Advantages
• Lower bleed
• Higher efficiency • Better resolution
Disadvantages Disadvantages

Phenomenex 91
Choosing Your Dimensions (cont’d)
Internal Diameter
Column internal diameter (ID) has a major impact on both resolu-
tion and sample capacity. Unlike column length, using smaller ID
columns can actually lead to faster run times, because the column
length required with a small ID is often shorter due to increased
efficiency.
Narrow Wide
0.10, 0.18, 0.20 mm Good Starting ID 0.32, 0.53 mm
Applications Applications
• Complex samples • Dirty samples
0.25 mm • Highly concentrated samples
Advantages
• Faster run times Advantages
• Better resolution • Increased sample capacity
• Good for on-column injections
Disadvantages
• Lower sample capacity Disadvantages
• Easily overloaded • Decreased efficiency
• May need higher flow rates
• Not compatible with most GC-MS
GC COLUMN SELECTION GUIDELINES | GC COLUMNS & ACCESSORIES
Film Thickness
Film thickness determines solute retention and plays an important
role in column sample capacity. Thin film columns are faster and
provide higher resolution, but lower sample capacity. In most in-
stances, choose the thinnest film possible that still provides ade-
quate retention. When working with active samples, using a slightly
thicker film can significantly improve peak shape.
Thin Thick
0.10, 0.18 µm Good Starting Film 0.50 µm or more
Applications Applications
• High boilers • Low boilers
• GC-MS applications 0.25 µm • Gases, solvents, purgeables, volatiles
• Purity testing
Advantages
• Faster run times Advantages
• Higher temp. limits • Better inertness
• Lower bleed • Higher capacity
• Higher efficiency
Disadvantages
Disadvantages • Slow run times
• Less inert • Lower temp. limits
• Limited retention • Higher bleed

Improved Peak Shape of Volatile Amines
Volatile amines are challenging analytes for GC analysis. They can
adsorb to even the smallest imperfections in fused silica. ZB‑624plus
undergoes a superior deactivation process which minimizes active
compound adsorption leading to gains in peak response and shape.
