3) Flood Estimation:
50 years design flood discharge (m 3/s) = Q50 = 0.278 C I A
Where,
C= Runoff coefficient
I= 50 year rainfall intensity (mm/h) lasting for tc hour duration
where tc is the time of concentration
A= Catchment area in Km2
STEP-1:- Calculation of Runoff Coefficient (C) :
Now, C= X (R F)0.2
Value of "X" depends upon the soil type and location as given in Chart No 1
Chart No 1
Sl. No. Description of catchment Value of X
1 Sandy Soil/sandy loam/arid areas 0.249
2 Alluvium / silty loam / coastal areas 0.332
Red Soil / clayey loam / grey or brown alluvium /
3 0.415
cultivated plains / tall crops /wooded areas
Black cotton/ clayey soil / lightly covered / lightly
4 0.456
wooded / plain and barren / submontane and plateau
5 Hilly soils / plateau and barren 0.498
STEP-2:- Calculation of time of concentration (t c) :
tc= [ L3 / H ] 0.345
= [ 1.245^3 / 70 ]^ 0.345
= 0.29 h
= 17 min
STEP-3:- Calculation of areal reduction factor depending upon catchment
area and duration of rainfall (F) :
Value of F is calculated from the table given in RDSO Report RBF 16
Value of F
Catchment area Duration of rainfall
km2 < 30 mins 30 to 60 mins 60 to 100 mins
A < 2.5 0.72 0.81 0.88
2.5≤A≤5 0.71 0.8 0.87
5<A≤13 0.7 0.79 0.86
13<A<25 0.68 0.78 0.85
Note: Rainfall duration shall be equal to the calculated t c for the catchment
F= 0.72
STEP-4:- Calculation of 50 year 24 hour point rainfall (R) :
R= 220 mm as read from 3f (lower Godawari) subzone.
And, For Black cotton/ clayey soil / lightly covered / lightly wooded / plain and barren /
submontane and plateau
X = 0.456
Therefore, C C = 0.456 x (22 x 0.72)^ 0.2
= 0.792
STEP-5:- Calculation of I :
From Fig. 2
The location of this bridge lies in sub-zone 3f of Hydrometerological Subzones of India
From Fig. 4
Thus, for curve corresponding to Zone 3
And,
For T = tc hrs = 0.29 h,
Ratio of 50 yrs tc hrs rainfall / 50 yrs 24 hrs rainfall = 0.18
For T = 1 h,
Ratio of 50 yrs 1 hr rainfall / 50 yrs 24 hrs rainfall = 0.38
Therefore, Ratio of 50 yrs tc hrs rainfall / 50 yrs 1 hr rainfall (K)= [ 0.18/0.38 ] = 0.474
Now, R50 24 hour rainfall = 220 mm (as in step 4)
So, R50 1 hour rainfall = [ 220 x 0.38 ]
= 83.6 mm
Now, R50 tc hour rainfall= K x R50 1 hour rainfall
= 39.626 mm
So, I = R50 (tc) / tc
= 39.626 / 0.29
= 136.641 mm/h
Hence, total discharge = Q50 = 0.278 C I A
= 0.278 x 0.792 x 136.641 x 0.510679
= 15 cumecs
Fixing of Bridge Length:
1) From Modified Rational Method:
Discharge Calculated: = 15.00 m3/s
Calculation of Regime width for discharge of 15.00 m3/s
Pw=1.811 X C X Q^1/2 (As per cl No. 4.5.3 of IRS Substructure foundation code.)
Where, P= Wetted perimeter in meters which can be taken as the effective width of waterway
Q= Design discharge in m3/s
C= A Coefficient normally equal to 2.67
= 1.811 X 2.67 X 15^0.5 18.727 m
3) Bank to bank distance:
Bank to bank distance: = 14.200 m
From the above three data and also considering the suitable abutment location and site condition,the
proposed bridge has been fixed as the details given below:
No. of Span = =3
Span Arrangement =3x12.2 M _PSC Slab
Total Bridge length (dirt wall inner to inner) = 40.225 m
Let,
Width of abutment shaft = 1.700 m
Width of pier shaft = 1.700 m
Length of bridge from face to face of Abutment = 38.525 m
Width of Clear waterway, B'= 38.525 - {1.7 x ( 3 - 1 ) x 2} = 31.725 m
Rugosity coefficient, n= = 0.05
Slope, S = 0.0562249
Q50=(B'xd)x(1/n)x((B'xd)/(B'+2d))2/3 x (S)1/2 = 33.00 m3/s
Depth of flow,d = = 0.407 m
LBL = = 371.469 m
Hence, Calculated HFL = = 371.876 m
Survey HFL = = 373.169 m
Take Survey HFL
Velocity = (1/n)x((B'xd)/(B'+2d))2/3 x (S)1/2 = 2.561 m/s
Cross-Sectinal Area-Bed Slope Method
Since the Bridge is provided across a defined stream, we estimate flood discharge from the conveyance factor & slope of the stream
applying Manning's Velocity Formula. As the flood rises above the bank line, the cross section of the river is divided in to three
subsections and velocity is calculated as per Cl-5.7, SP-13:2004.
Step I - HFL Fixation:-
From the survey data, we fix the HFL = 328.485
Position HFL LBL Chainage
At U/S 329.845 326.034 320.000
At D/S 327.540 323.503 315.000
At ± 0.0 328.485 324.398 0.0
Step II - Slope Calculation :-
Average Slope is caculated as :Position LBL Chainage = 0.0030
At U/S 326.034 320.000
At D/S 323.503 315.000
As there is very much undulation along the long section of the stream , the bed slop is obtained as,
Use Slope,S : = 0.0030
Rugosity co-efficient used= = 0.05 [ From, IRC:SP:13-2004, Table- 5.1 ]

At ± 0.0 = 132.02 m3/s
Average discharge = 127.30 m3/s
Design Discharge = 127.30 m3/s
Regime width = 4.8 x (Q)0.5 = 54.16 m
Linear waterway to be provided= = 36.29 m
Afflux and Maximum scour level calculations
HFL = 373.169 m
LBL = 371.469 m
Width of abutment shaft = 1.700 m
Width of pier shaft = 1.700 m
Providing m Dia Pile
Length of bridge from face to face of Abutment = 38.000 m
Length of bridge between c/c of Abutment = 39.700 m
Width of obstructed waterway= 3 x 12.2 = 36.6 m
Clear linear water way Provided = 38 - {1.7 x ( 3 - 1 ) x 2} = 31.2 m
( As per cl. No. 4.5.6 of IRS Substructure Foundation Code )
Design discharge = 15.000 m3/s
Considering Velocity = 2.561 m/s
Design Discharge for foundation(Qf) = 15 x 1.0 = 15.000 m3/s
Design per linear m = qf = 0.48 cumec/m
Average Ksf for abutment (from soil report) = 2.580
Average Ksf for Pier (from soil report) = 2.580
(For Wardha at hivra site of Godavari Basin, GOVERNMENT OF INDIA CENTRAL
WATER COMMISSION)
Here, Width of waterway provided = 38.000 m
Lacey's Regime Width = 18.727 m
Width of waterway provided > Lacey's Regime Width
So, Following, (Ref. Cl: 4.6.3 of IRS Substructure Foundation Code )
Normal Scour depth from HFL for Abutment = 0.473 (Qf / f)^1/3 = 0.851 m
Normal Scour depth from HFL for Pier = 0.473 (Qf / f)^1/3 0.851 m
Scour Level:
For Abutment ( 1 x DSL)= 373.169 - 0.851 372.400 m
For Abutment (1.25XDSL)= 373.169 - 0.851 x 1.25= 372.200 m
For Pier(Non Siesmic) (2 x DSL)= 373.169 - 0.851 x 2= 371.500 m
For Pier(Siesmic) (2 x0.9x DSL)= 373.169 - 0.851 x 2 x 0.9= 371.700 m
Hence, MSL at abutment = 371.469 m
Hence, MSL at pier = 371.469 m
Scour Depth from Existing Ground Level:-
At Abutment = 0.000 m
At Pier = 0.000 m
Calculation of afflux:
Discharge = 15.0 cumec
Velocity (V) = 2.561 m/s
Area (A) = 5.86 m2
Total Linear Waterway = 38 m
Average Depth = 5.86/38 = 0.15 m
Clear Linear Waterway due to obstruction= 31.2 m
Area(a) = 4.68 m2
As per Cl. No. 4.7.1 of IRS Substructure & Foundation Code
= (0.37+ 0.01524) x[(1.57)-1] = 0.217 m
(Considering HFL is including Afflux)
So, Afflux= 0m
