Nicanor Abelardo –

Photography and Filmmaking


Camera – is a light proof object with a lens that captures incoming light and directs the light and resulting image
toward film or imaging device.
Film – is a thin flexible strip of plastic or other material coated with light-sensitive emulsion for exposure in a camera
used to produce photographs or motion pictures.

Photography used because of the following reasons:

● as a medium of news and information about the colony,


● as a tool for tourism,
● as an instrument for anthropology,
● as a means for asserting social status,
● as an implement for historical documentation,
● as a device for communication
● as materials for propaganda, and
● and as a source of ideas for illustrations and engravings.

Eduardo Masferre

● known as the Father of Photography

Albert Honiss

● established the first known actively operational photo studio.


● popular producer of commercial visiting cards and aesthetic picture portraits.

Felix Laureano

● one of the first photographers of Filipino nationality.


● His pictorial compositions were En el Baño and Cuadrilleros.
● Focuses on human forms, cockfights, and bullfights in the Philippines.
● First photographer to publish a book of photographs about the Philippines called Recuerdos de Filipinas.
● Known as the First Filipino Photographer.

George Tapan

● Is a well-known award-winning travel photographer.


● Won two Pacific Asia Tourism Association Gold Awards.
John Chua

● Is a remarkable seasoned advertising and commercial photographer with more than forty years of
experience in the Philippine photography industry.

Jose Nepomuceno

● Known as the Father of Philippine Movies


● First Filipino who made a moving picture.

Julian Manansala

● Known as the Father of Nationalistic Film.

Laurice Guillen

● Directed the film Tanging Yaman in 2001 which won Best Picture in MMFF

the 1950's – were considered the Golden Age of Philippine filmmaking.
