Hello! Welcome to this Grade 8 English Self Learning Kit on Cohesive


Devices!

As you work on this learning kit, you will be engaged with different activities
that will help you understand the topic. These activities are: picture puzzles, hunting
the cohesive devices used in sentences, joining clauses and sentences with the use
of cohesive devices and writing a letter. If you find it hard to answer the activities
given, I suggest you reread the covered topic for better understanding.

You are given (1) one day to study the topic and accomplish the provided
activities. Follow the directions of each activity and make sure not to look at the
answer key before and as you go through the activities or else this self-learning kit
will be useless. Honesty should be observed as you go through the activities.

You can ask the help of your parents and other members of your family if there
are activities that need assistance, but do not let them accomplish everything.

Please do not write anything on this kit. Kindly use your notebook in answering
the activities and assessments. Finally, handle it with care.

1. differentiate the different functions of cohesive devices;
2. appreciate the unity of human beings in times of pandemic
through writing a speech; and
3. use appropriate cohesive devices in writing a speech.

more if we are happy with the things that we are doing. This

What are COHESIVE DEVICES?
DEVICES?
Before we tackle cohesive devices, we have to know the definition of
cohesion, since the only aim of cohesive devices is to achieve unity of ideas.

Cohesion is the act of having a unified idea in writing compositions. It is


important for the parts of a written text to be connected. The writer therefore
should ensure that the words and sentences he used stick together to
achieved a smooth flow of information in paragraphs.

EXAMPLE:
 Laura laughed while reading the story, The Gift of Magi, because there

is a part where the man sold his watch to buy a comb for his wife and the

woman sold her hair to buy a wrist band for the watch of her husband.

The above sentence uses while, because and and in


order to have a smooth flow of ideas. These words are three of
the many examples of cohesive devices. Let’s be familiar with
the other types of cohesive devices to achieve cohesion

WHAT ARE COHESIVE DEVICES?


Cohesive Devices
o sometimes called linking words, linkers, connectors, discourse markers or transitional
words
o are words or phrases that show the relationship between paragraphs or sections of
a text or speech
o are used to signal relationships between ideas in your writing

Here is a chart containing the functions of cohesive devices
together with the examples. Take a look and be familiar with these
connectors.

The two possibility, (the virus cannot live in immunized individuals, and survive in
sanitized environment) is joined by the connector nor. The connector nor gives an
additional idea in relation with the first given idea, the virus cannot live in
immunized individuals.

*Reading is a good way to learn new vocabulary words; furthermore it can


improve your skill in spelling English words correctly.

In this example, one benefit of reading, that (reading is a good way to learn new
vocabulary) is connected to another benefit which is (it can improve your skill in
spelling English words correctly.)

*You are not allowed to use your phone inside the classroom. Similarly, you
have to remember to switch it off when you are inside the library.

This is a sentence where one action in the first sentence, is applicable to


another action in the second sentence and the similarity is established by using
the connector similarly.

*The school canteen needs to cater nutritious foods in the same way as the
parents care for the nutrition of their children.

In this sentence, the how parents care about the nutrition of their children is
being compared with how the school canteen should keep the need to cater
nutritious food through the use of the connector in the same way.

*It is difficult on the part of ABS-CBN to stop from giving service to the Filipino community.
Nevertheless, they are doing their best to fight the cease and desist order.

In this sentence, the first idea, it is difficult on the part of ABS-CBN to stop
from giving service to the Filipino community, is contradicted by the second idea
they are doing their best to fight the cease and desist order with the use of the
connector nevertheless.

now successful in her life, especially in her chosen career.

In this sentence, the effect of Procopia’s action, (listens very well to her

proud of, and some examples of these traits and values is given through the use of
the connector such as.

* Appreciate the small things your mom does for you. For instance, leave
a thank-you note for her every now and then, or kiss her on the cheek before leaving home.

It is stated in this sentence that we should be appreciative of the efforts of our


mothers, and it states some way of showing our appreciation like, leave a thank-
you note for her every now and then, or kiss her on the cheek before leaving home
through the use of the connector for instance.

* We are so curious about swab testing during this pandemic, and this is how they do it.

collected. Lastly, the swab is then inserted into a container and sent to a lab
for testing.
