Developing a therapy center for Mental Health

Foreign

In the study conducted by Kathleen Hall Jamieson, the first sign that a person has a mental disorder
often appears in adolescence, one would expect library shelves full of books for doctors, guidance
counselors, and parents on the subject. Since early diagnosis and treatment increase the affected
adolescent’s chances for a productive adult life, one would expect that understanding how to prevent
and treat depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, schizophrenia, and alcohol
and drug abuse would be a national priority. One would expect a concerted national effort as well to
prevent adolescent suicide and to find ways to promote mental health among the young. Although
researchers have made sometimes stunning progress in treating adolescent mental disorders and in
understanding ways to promote adolescent mental health, there have been surprisingly few attempts to
digest what is known and what needs to be known. (Jamieson 2005)

In 1953 the American Psychiatric Association established an Architectural Study Project in collaboration
with the American Institute of Architects. The project brought together a wide range of experts from
psychiatry and the behavioural sciences and the planning and design professions to provide solutions to
the ailing mental hospital system in North America. They began to focus attention on various aspects of
the hospital environment, such as light, colour and the creation of spaces for privacy and social contact,
in ways that would go on to influence theories, methods and designs far beyond the walls of the
institution. This paper will explore the contribution of the mental hospital, as both laboratory and field
site, to the development of the new field of environmental psychology which attended to the function
and design of a range of city spaces to prevent mental illness and promote mental health in a period of
urban crisis. (Ramsden 2018)

This clinical manual and curricula began as part of a clinical improvement initiative by the Gateway
Foundation, which sought to better fulfill the mission of reducing substance abuse and co-occurring
mental health problems. A range of research-supported practices was reviewed, with particular
attention paid to the following factors such as Engaging clients in therapy, Eliciting and clarifying pro-
health values and goals, Enhancing motivation toward value-based lifestyle change, Addressing, through
strategic planning and skill development, the multiple factors that may assist a person in achieving and
maintaining sobriety.

The product of our efforts was the mindfulness-based sobriety (MBS) model, which integrates three
evidence-based practices: acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), motivational interviewing (MI),
and relapse prevention therapy (RPT). The MBS model is a collaborative approach to open-group
therapy that is intended to help individuals with substance use problems achieve sobriety through
enhancing awareness, accepting experience, and clarifying values. To the extent that individuals are
aware of their situations and to the extent that their goals and actions are grounded in personal values,
they are less likely to engage in self-defeating behaviors—that is, behaviors that diminish their sense of
well-being, self-worth, and personal meaning. In MBS, sobriety is approached in the service of value-
based living. (Tuner et al., 2014)

While many young people recognize that physical fitness is important for maintaining a healthy body,
the importance of mental fitness for maintaining a healthy mind and emotions is sometimes overlooked.
Statistics suggest that nearly one out of every five teens struggles with a mental health concern, and one
in ten suffers from a mental disorder severe enough to cause some level of impairment, including poor
academic performance, loss of friends, family conflict, faulty body image, and difficulty making
decisions. Compounding the problem is that fact that many young people experience a long delay—
sometimes decades—between the onset of their symptoms and when they eventually seek treatment.
(Bellenir 2010)

At least one in five youth suffers from a current developmental, emotional, or behavioral problem
(Burns et al., 1995; Institute of Medicine, 1989; Irwin, Burg, & Cart, 2002; U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, 1999; Zill & Schoenborn, 1990). The prevention and treatment of such difficulties in
adolescence is one of the major public health problems facing the United States. To help adolescents
achieve their full potential both as youths and as adults, it is important that we focus resources on this
issue now. Helping adolescents reach their potential involves the identification, treatment, and
prevention of mental disorders that interfere with the adolescent’s development into a successful adult.
However, getting rid of the disorder is not enough. We need also to instill positive values and behaviors
that enable formerly troubled young people to flourish, contribute to society, and be happy and healthy.
(Evans et al.,2005)

Filipinos across the world have general reluctance and unfavorable attitude towards formal help-seeking
despite high rates of psychological distress. They prefer seeking help from close family and friends.
Barriers cited by Filipinos living in the Philippines include financial constraints and inaccessibility of
services, whereas overseas Filipinos were hampered by immigration status, lack of health insurance,
language difficulty, experience of discrimination and lack of acculturation to host culture. Both groups
were hindered by self and social stigma attached to mental disorder, and by concern for loss of face,
sense of shame, and adherence to Asian values of conformity to norms where mental illness is
considered unacceptable. Filipinos are also prevented from seeking help by their sense of resilience and
self-reliance, but this is explored only in qualitative studies. They utilize special mental health care only
as the last resort or when problems become severe. Other prominent facilitators include perception of
distress, influence of social support, financial capacity, and previous positive experience in formal help.
(Martinez 2020)

Mental health has emerged as an important public health concern in recent years. With a high
proportion of children and adolescents affected by mental disorders, it is important to ensure that they
are provided with proper care and treatment. With the goal of sharing the activities and good practices
on child and adolescent mental health promotion, care, and treatment in Japan and the Philippines, the
National Center for Global Health and Medicine conducted a training program on the promotion of
mental health focused on treatment and care in Japan and the Philippines. ( Estrada et al.,2020)

This study was conceived within the context of increasing incidence of mental health challenges
observed among college adolescents in the Philippines. Being an important social institution, the school
must be able to create a social environment in order to foster better mental wellbeing and quality of life
among its students. This research sought to examine the relationship among student involvement,
mental health and quality of life among college students in a Philippine university. This study utilized a
quantitative cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational design. Survey was administered to 249 students
in a private university. Results suggest that involvement in school organizations was correlated to
depression levels, general positive affect and life satisfaction. Social interactions with entities in school
was also related with quality of life. All subscales of mental health were associated with quality of life
among the student respondents. ( Cleofas 2019)

This study aims to provide a review of potential barriers to seeking mental health services among
Filipinos. Research on help-seeking behavior s among Filipinos living in the Philippines and other
countries (e.g., US, Canada, and Australia) suggest that mental health services in the Philippines are
inaccessible and monetarily prohibitive, and beliefs about the aetiology and nature of mental illness are
inconsistent with the medical model. Other cultural variables such as shame, stigma, and collectivist
beliefs also discourage Filipinos from seeking help from mental health professionals. Furthermore, these
variables could account for the preference for folk healers and lay networks in treating mental illnesses.
As such, cultural and economic factors need to be accounted for in conceptualizing Filipinos’ utilization
of mental health services. Implications and suggestions to aid practice were also discussed. (Tuliao 2014)

Mental, neurological and substance use conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis,
epilepsy, dementia and alcohol-use disorders, pose a significant challenge in the Philippines. In 2017, the
two most common mental health conditions, anxiety and depression, accounted for over 800 000 years
of life lived with disability in the country, leading not only to vast human suffering but also to economic
losses due to the impact on the workforce productivity. Reported suicide rates in the Philippines have
been increasing over the past several decades, particularly among young people, with the latest
estimate (in 2015) indicating 17% of young people aged 13–15 had attempted suicide. (World Health
Organization 2021)
