Orsat gas analyser
An Orsat gas analyser is a piece of laboratory equip-ment
used to analyse a gas sample (typically fossil fuelflue gas)
for its oxygen, carbon monoxide and carbondioxide
content. Although largely replaced by instrumen-tal
techniques, the Orsat remains a reliable method
ofmeasurement and is relatively simple to [Link] was
patented before 1873 by Mr. H Orsat.

1- Construction
The apparatus consists essentially of a calibrated water-jacketed
gas burette connected by glass capillary tubingto two or three
absorption pipettes containing chemicalsolutions that absorb the
gasses it is required to [Link] safety and portability, the
apparatus is usually en-cased in a wooden [Link] absorbents

Potash)Alkaline pyrogallolammoniacal Cuprous
chlorideThebaseofthegasburetteisconnectedtoalevellingbot-tle
to enable readings to be taken at constant pressure andto transfer
the gas to and from the absorption media. Theburette contains
slightly acidulated water with a trace ofchemical indicator
(typically methyl orange) for coloura-tion.

2- Method of analysis
By means of a rubber tubing arrangement, the gas to beanalyzed
is drawn into the burette and flushed throughseveral times.
Typically, 100ml is withdrawn for ease ofcalculation. Using the
stopcocks that isolate the absorp-tion burettes, the level .The gas
is then passed into the caustic potash burette, leftto stand for
about two minutes and then withdrawn, iso-lating the remaining
gas via the stopcock [Link] process is repeated to
ensure full absorption. Afterleveling the liquid in the bottle and
burette, the remainingvolume of gas in the burette indicates the
percentage ofcarbon dioxide [Link]
same technique is repeated for oxygen, using thepyrogallol, and
carbon monoxide using the ammoniacalcuprous chloride.
