Adventure and Space Ntb. Work

The document contains questions about space-related topics like orbits, satellites, constellations, and artificial vs natural satellites. It asks students to define key terms, differentiate between astronaut and cosmonaut, give reasons why mountaineers need training and why Earth is called a blue planet. Questions also cover what makes up the solar system, why artificial satellites are launched, and how trekking can damage the natural environment. The homework includes completing a flowchart, drawing constellations, and displaying them on a softboard.

Notebook work

Adventure and Space

Mind-map

H.W: Complete the flowchart given on pg 120 and draw in notebook.

Q1. Define

a) Orbit: A fixed path over which each planet moves around the sun.
b) Satellite: An object in space that orbits or circles around a bigger object.
c) Gravity: A force which tries to pull two objects toward each other.
d) Constellation: A constellation is a group of stars that looks like a particular shape in the sky
and has been given a name.
Q2. Differentiate between:

a) Natural and artificial satellite

b) Astronaut and cosmonaut

Astronaut Cosmonaut

1.Astronaut derived 1.Cosmonaut derived

from the Greek word from two Greek words
‘astro nautes’ that ‘kosmos’ and ‘nautes’
simply which means universe
means star sailor sailor

2.It includes 2.It includes individuals

Canada, Europe,
Japan, and the
United States

3.Astronauts are 3.Cosmonauts are

trained by America trained by Russia based
based space agencies space agencies

Q3. Give reasons:

a) Mountaineers need training before climbing mountains.

As you go higher up altitude, the level of oxygen decreases and breathing becomes
extremely difficult. Harsh winds and cold temperature make climbing all the more difficult.
So it’s important to be trained in mountaineering.
b) The earth is called a blue planet.
Due to presence of water, earth looks blue from outer space. That’s why earth is called blue
planet.
Q4. Answer the following questions:

a) What is solar system?

The solar system consists of the sun and the eight planets that revolve around it. Besides
planets, there are asteroids, comets and bits of dust and clouds of gases. There are also
satellites that revolve around the planets.
b) Why do we launch artificial satellites into space?

Artificial satellites are launched into space by rockets and can be used for:

 communication– satellite television and phone calls;

 Earth observation - including weather forecasting, tracking storms and pollution, spying and
satellite photography;
 navigation - including the Global Positioning System (GPS);
 astronomy – looking into outer space from our solar system.

Q5. While doing trekking, some people damage our natural environment. How? (Hots)

1. Trekking causes trampling and it causes to widen the trail, create multiple trails and also increase
soil erosion.

2. The litter of non-biodegradable waste by trekkers is the most of the serious problems for the
environment.

3. Building campfires hurts the environment as many areas of ecological importance have been
destroyed by fires which have got out of control.
4. Human waste incorrectly dumped is one of the biggest causes of environmental damage. Both
human feces and urine can contaminate natural water supplies.

5. Unwanted intrusion or getting too close to wildlife can result in adult species abandoning their
young ones.

6. It effects their mating cycle which can have an extremely negative impact on the wildlife
ecology, especially if there are endangered wildlife species present.

Enhancement: Draw 4 constellations: Ursa Major, Ursa Minor in your notebook and Scorpious and
Orion on an A4 sheet and display on softboard.
