mission, vision and even core values to the society.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 ABSTRACT
Industrial attachment is an essential component of the curriculum for any University student before
completing their courses.
The attachment period is usually a minimum of 8 weeks. It is an integral part of the education system
whose aim is to provide students with an opportunity of gaining practical experience in their various
chosen industries.
The practical experience enables one to acquire skills that are necessary for their future roles in their
respective work places.
This report is the outcome of my twelve weeks practical training at the Kenya Ports Authority, Finance
department.
.1.1 THE KENYA PORTS AUTHORITY.

1.7 ORGANIZATIOAL STRUCTURE.
CHAPTER TWO
HOST ATTACHMENT DEPARTMENT
2.1 Key Functions of the department.
The finance department is divided into
Financial Accounting
Management Accounting
Procurement
Commercial services
I was attached at the Financial Accounting department offices.
I was welcomed into the department by the late Mr. Kiptum, my Supervisor.
The F.A. department collect data from mainly the marine operations where the field offices interact
with the ships, cargo, containers and even oversee the services being rendered i.e pilotage,
anchoring, discharging cargo, mooring among other services. They collect the information and then
forward it to the F.A offices who write down charges for the services rendered and prepare invoices
for the goods delivered and even goods discharged out if the country.
The F.A. charges and bills for the services they have rendered and received within the port habour.
2.2 ATTACHE'S ASSIGNED ROUTINE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
My main duties included being involved in filing of the documents, data entry into the system and
delivering reports to various departments.
CHAPTER THREE
3.1 OBJECTIVES OF THE INDUSTRIAL ATTACHMENT
The main objective of the industrial attachment included;
To observe the student's attitude towards work, workmates and authority.
To observe the student's reliability, being able to work with minimum supervision.
To observe the student's punctuality and time consiousness.
To access the student's quality of work.
To understand how disciplined the student is .
To observe the student's log book if it's clean and UpTo date.
3.2 SUCCESS OF THE ATTACHMENT EXERCISE
I had much success in my attachment. I had the opportunity to apply my class theoretical knowledge to
solve and accomplish some of the tasks that I was given. I felt quite at home with the activities that the
finance department undertakes
I was given the tasks that were quite related to what I had learnt in school. The tasks included:
Invoice processing, a task I did at the creditors ledger office
Preparation of payment vouchers, a task accomplished at the payroll section
General ledger poasying, task accomplished at the creditors ledger office
Opening up of current account, task accomplished at the Bank and ledger office after being
approved by the GMF.
Achieving these tasks gave me more confidence in knowing that I could accomplish things that
experienced employees were doing. This was an indication that the skills I had acquired in school
were relevant in my career path .
3.3 CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERD DURING THE ATTACHMENT.
The challenge included:
Absentism from some of the employees
Not being attended to at times
Some employees wouldn't let you use their computers
No clear work objectives
3.3.1 SOLUTIONS TO THE CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERD.
1. Absentism
On the issue of absentism I would proceed to the next attached office as I waited the the absent
employees to get back. Some offices only had one employee while others worked from home. In
the absence of the one employee I had to proceed to the next office.
2. Observation
At times the office would be too busy to take one through what they do, I used observation as a
technique to understand and see what they were doing
3. Discussion
For those employees that wouldn't let me access their computers amidst COVID regulations, we
held discussions and several demonstrations . At the end I gladly understood everything.
CHAPTER FOUR
4.1 SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS.
Generally my attachment at KPA was good, I learnt alot of what I already knew theoretically and now
I'm able to apply them practically.
To anyone looking for an attachment, I would recommend KPA as it is an ideal place.
