Teacher’s Class. Note all the information you will need and tasks you will need to do before
working on this episode.
Objectives:
At the end of this Learning Episode, I must be able to:
• Analyze teaching-learning problems prevailing in the classroom.
• List matching action as a probable solution to the teaching learning problems.
Draw a CIRCLE around five words that you have also identified as problems in teaching
learning.
Participate and Assist
What five problems have you identified from the words that you have encircled? Make
a statement. Write in the space below.
The problems I identified are:
1. Absenteeism
Absenteeism is a behavior that has a negative influence on student success. Class
attendance has a favorable impact on students’ academic achievement; hence, a mandated
attendance policy is critical in enhancing students' academic advancement.
2. Bullying
Bullying is becoming an increasingly prevalent problem in modern public or even
private schools, and bullying does not only affects child’s confidence and self-esteem but
also in their academic performance.
3. Comprehension
Comprehension refers to the ability to understand written words. Students with
poor comprehension frequently lose self-confidence in their ability to read, which has a
detrimental impact on their academic achievement.
4. Motivation
Self- motivation leads to good study approach and a high level of study effort, which
leads to improved academic success. Moreover, a lack of motivation results in no progress.
5. Reading Difficulty
Inability to read has an adverse influence on the ability to excel in all other academic
courses as well as in life beyond school. This will have an eloquent impact on the child’s
self-esteem and view of himself as a student that can be resulted on his/her academic
performance and worst on his/her career decision.
Excellent! Let us see how we can assist and learn at the same time.
Suppose, the problem you have spotted is: COMPREHENSION
How can you assist your mentor, after knowing that the learners have difficulty in
comprehension?
Comprehension is an important aspect of reading. Issues in reading comprehension
occur when students struggle to understand the meaning behind words, phrases and other
texts. Moreover, I can assist my mentor in dealing learners having difficulty in
comprehension through suggesting and implementing practices and activities like: setting
goals for students, structuring lessons, explicit teaching through providing models and
concepts, worked examples appropriate and matched in their level of ability, collaborative
learning, multiple exposures involving demonstrating or modelling a new idea by using
physical actions and visual aid, questioning and administering clear, corrective and
actionable feedback. Additionally, administered specific activities includes: monitoring
comprehension, using graphic and semantic organizers, answering questions, generating
questions, recognizing story structure and summarizing.
Make a Choice for your ACTION
A. Conduct a tutorial lesson.
B. Show video lessons to help enhance comprehension.
C. Make a learning task to develop comprehension.
Suppose you chose Letter A, conduct a tutorial. So, you have identified the SOLUTION
that matches the PROBLEM which is Difficulty in Comprehension.
The Problem is: The Action is:
Difficulty in
Conduct a Tutorial
Comprehension
Can you also choose letter B. Show video lesson as a SOLUTION for the same PROBLEM?
Explain.
Option B, which is through presenting video lessons is a different approach to
improve comprehension specifically in reading. Wherein, the theme and topics are related
to those of the reading passages. Video lessons is a great way on students learning especially
when it comes to reading comprehension, since learners can easily remember ideas through
watching illustrations, hearing concepts being taught and exposure to technologies.
Moreover, videos create a more engaging sensory experience than using materials alone.
The Problem is: The Action is:
Difficulty in
Show video lessons
Comprehension
What about Letter C as a SOLUTION to other same PROBLEM? Why?
Option C, which is to develop learning tasks to improve comprehension. These
includes learning tasks whom to look for the 5 W’s: Who, What, Where, When, Why and How
when students read. Moreover, to look for descriptors i.e. adjectives and adverbs when
reading. Third, to visualize what they read by creating picture or drawing the main story or
a specific scenario. In this way, it helps the students tie their visual memory and apply the
picture in their mind as created. Lastly, is asking questions. With the aforementioned
learning tasks, the teacher will be able to measure the level of comprehension of the students
and to what specific area need focus and improvement. Furthermore, teachers may monitor
their students' learning progress, discover their weaknesses and create the most effective
strategic intervention material.
The Problem is: The Action is:
Difficulty in Make learning tasks to
Comprehension improve comprehension
Notice
What have you noticed of the problem identified above? Can there be more than one
solution to the problem? Explain
Reading comprehension are widespread in the Philippines and among pupils ever
since. As per cited, Philippines ranked lowest in reading comprehension among 79
countries. Moreover, less than 15 percent of schoolchildren in the Philippines, or about three
in every 20, can read simple texts in large part due to the longest schools closure of more
than 70 weeks as of the middle of February caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In connection,
with the aforementioned solutions: conduct a tutorial, show video lessons and make learning
tasks helps combat and develop the difficulty in comprehension. By just depending on action
would not serve to solve the problem, the above-mentioned problem contains several
answers. Keep in mind that there are multiple answers to every situation we face. We just
need to look into and find these answers. To develop different answers to the same problem,
we must be imaginative, adaptable, and innovative. A solution, for example, may work in one
class but not in another, thus it should always include backup plans for coping with
difficulties.
Analyze
Let us try to look into the following scenarios in the daily life of a teacher. This
scenario might also be similar to the class you have observed and noticed.
Scenario A: Miss Fely is a grade four teacher in a typical elementary school. She has forty
learners in her class, one half of them cannot classify animals into vertebrates and
invertebrates. She has been repeating the same Science lesson for two weeks, yet no progress
was observed. This situation has been bothering Miss Fely.
Can you identify, Miss Fely’s problem?
Yes. As I have identified based on the scenario provided, Miss Fely's problem is
that her students do not comprehend the distinction between vertebrates and
invertebrates. Her students, as described in the preceding situation, are unable to
classify creatures using the said classifications of animals.
Can you find a solution to solve her problems? Give your two suggestions.
Yes, what I can suggest to Miss Fely are as follows:
a. To utilize charts specifically on identifying the animal classifications of vertebrates
and invertebrates. She must not forget to provide a clear and simple description of
both groups, as well as pictures that would clearly identify their differences. She could
also assist her
b. To employ a video presentation on vertebrates and invertebrates. Miss Fely should
consider the reality that students learn a lot from what they perceive. It will also make
it easier for her to deliver her subject instruction. With this approach employed in the
teaching-learning process of Miss Fely, it will make her fourth-grade children pay
greater attention to the subject, which they will subsequently absorb, understand,
and retain. Remember that merely discussing vertebrates and invertebrates would
make it tough for the students to grasp, so a video presentation would be ideal to
retain students' attention and eventually familiarize them with the topic.
Additionally, in this technological age, it is best to make use of what learners are most
interested in these days, and that is technology.
What solution can solve Miss Fely’s problem?
Among the two alternatives I proposed to Miss Fely, using video
presentations is the most likely to address her problem. In the sense that teaching
in a traditional way is too boring and could lose students' interest The probability
of getting the students' attention while a technological approach is being utilized
is much higher than the first approach. In order to create an active and effective
learning process, the teacher must consider trends or newly developed teaching
methods that interest students.
How?
By putting the proposed solution into action. Miss Fely must first choose
videos relevant to the discussion and suitable for fourth-grade pupils. She
must then check that the content does not contain any violent clips that pupils
should not view. She must not forget to expound the important elements
found in the video. She must repeat and highlight essential elements from the
lesson towards the end of the presentation.
Are they matched with the problem?
Yes, Miss Fely's dilemma corresponds to the solution I gave above. Miss Fely's
concern about her students' inadequate knowledge of their vertebrate and
invertebrate topics is resolved when the chosen solution is utilized. Furthermore,
because the suggested method incorporates the use of visual and audio-visual assets
such as charts and instructive videos, she will be able to better explain the issue to
her students. Furthermore, her students would be able to readily digest knowledge
and create connections from the resources offered regarding their topic.
Scenario B: Sir Ryan teaches in a disadvantaged urban community. Most of his learners come
from families that are disrupted, either with single parents or with their guardians who stand
only as parents. They are deprived of the necessary food, clothing and shelter.
Can you identify the most probable teaching-learning problems/s in the class
of Sir Ryan?
a. Sir Ryan's class's most likely teaching-learning problem would be a lack of parental
support and assistance, as the majority of his students come from a disrupted family.
b. Another problem I have identified with the given scenario is a lack of motivation and
absenteeism. This is due to the reason that students in this scenario are deprived
of fundamental human needs or basic needs such as food, clothes, and shelter.
Without these basic necessities, students would suffer from hunger, thirst and etc.
that would affect their learning performance.
• Can you propose a solution to solve one of the problems that you have
identified?
Motivation can dramatically improve productivity, performance, and grades.
However, how can you help a child from a disrupted family and deprived of basic
needs to overcome a lack of motivation to study? To address such a problem, the
teacher must first have a serious conversation with the guardian or parent of the
child. Encourage parents to educate their children and assist them in understanding
their children's critical needs. Promote the home-school-community relationship.
In terms of addressing students' deprivation of basic needs, ask a local government
Reflect
After reading the two scenarios given above, how would identifying
problematic situations and finding solutions to these problems help you become a
better teacher?
Explain:
After reading the two scenarios given, there is one thing that captivates me that is:
“You must be vigilant as a potential teacher in order to spot problematic situations”. This
can be made possible through allowing oneself to pay attention to the complexities of one's
surroundings; improving my ability to look and observe attentively; to be meticulous in
understanding and identifying the situation. Since there are lot of factors in student learning
and one of these are: Family Background, Kind of Learner, Classroom Environment and such.
Thus, finding potential solutions to problematic situations in the classroom will help me
become a better teacher in the future. Aside from that, it enables me to grow and appreciate
challenges that frequently emerge in classes. For I do believe that I am a capitalist for change.
Thus, I should be an effective and efficient educator.
Write Action Research Prompts
Using any one example of problems in this activity, answer the AR prompts that follow:
OBSERVE
What problematic situation prevails in the classroom?
Connectivity for online learning, poor interest and motivation, parental
noninvolvement, and disruptive classroom behavior are some of the most prevalent
problematic situations in the classroom. Among these dilemmas, parental noninvolvement
is, for me, the heaviest issue among them. For every student, the process of early learning
starts in the home, wherein our parents are our first teachers. Parents teach their children
the fundamental skills, values, and essential attitudes necessary for daily living. This
unwritten knowledge is vital as it helps the children build coping mechanisms for successful
adult life. However, if this learning does not occur in childhood, or if parents do not pass
down these social cues, the child will struggle to adjust to the social environment of school,
resulting in a lack of interest and motivation, or even disruptive behavior in the classroom,
because the child was not prepared by his parents to cope in the outside world.
REFLECT
What changes do you want to achieve?
Establishing home-school relationship is one of the changes that should come first
hand. Building a strong connection among the parents of the students will help me
understand my learners well. When parents and teachers regularly share information
about a child and what’s happening in the classroom, it supports the learning process
from all angles, setting up students for success. Through homeschool communication,
the teacher better understands the child’s strengths and their own individual
personality and learning style. The teacher can focus on teaching and be able to
address and overcome challenges for each learner.
Enhanced relationships with parents, peers, and teachers. This is a great
opportunity for parents and teachers to openly discuss how and what a child is doing
in school. The same goes with parents' talk about happenings in their home that could
impact the behavior and learning of the child in the classroom.
Feeling of empowerment and confidence. Communication between teacher and
parent improved academic achievement because teachers were already aware of any
learning styles that worked for them and, when used, created a positive attitude
toward learning.
PLAN
What strategies will you use to improve the situation?
To address the problematic situation, regular visits at their residence is
commendable to use in order to get to know them personally and build a positive connection
with their parents. The teacher should encourage parents to attend classroom meetings and
share contact information in case of an emergency. Parents and students should both be free
to voice their concerns. Parents and teachers should openly discuss how and what a child is
doing in school. Provide feedback on students’ performance. This will help them identify how
they would assess their children and what they would need to provide as a parent. Build
positive relationships and trust with the students’ parents through open communication
about the child’s performance and needs and think of alternatives to help the learners
succeed in the learning process. In order to achieve an effective and efficient home and
school relationship, both parents and teachers should work together to provide a support
system that helps children thrive and succeed in school.

I. Title of Action Research: Improving Students’ Speaking Proficiency Using Games
.
II. Author/s: Dwi Nurul Fajariyah
III. Abstract
This action research study is designed to improve students’ speaking proficiency
by implementing games. The aims of this research are: 1) to describe whether or not and
to what extent games improve speaking proficiency; 2) to identify the situation when
games are implemented in the speaking class.
The research is conducted from 3rd April to 8th May 2009. The subject of the
study is the students of class 8E of SMP Negeri 2 Baki, Sukoharjo. The research is carried
out in two cycles; each cycle consists of two classroom meetings. Every cycle consist of a
series of step. They are identifying the problem, planning the action, implementing the
action, observing the action, reflecting the action and revising the plan. Data are collected
through survey, observation and interview. The observation was reflected in field notes,
research diary, audio-recording and photograph.
The researcher analyzed both qualitative data and quantitative data. Qualitative
data are analyzed by using constant comparative method that consist of four steps
namely comparing incidents applicable to each category, integrating categories and their
properties, delimiting the theory and writing the theory. The quantitative data are
analyzed by using descriptive statistic.
Quantitative data, which are collected by conducting pre-test and post-test, are analyzed
to know the improvement of students’ speaking proficiency. The mean score of pre-test
is 4.08. This score improved to 5.31 in post-test 1 and even higher in post-test 2 that is
6.05. From the qualitative data, the researcher finds that the implementation of games
improve the students’ speaking proficiency and the classroom situation.
The research finding shows that students’ speaking proficiency improved in the
term of ability in: 1) answering the teacher’s questions orally 2) identifying the words
and grammar used in the expression 3) making sentences using appropriate grammar
and vocabulary 4) expressing their idea. Besides, the classroom situation is also more
alive in terms of the students’ activeness in: 1) joining the activities 2) asking the teacher
about their difficulties 3) discussing the task with their friend 4) increasing their
motivation to learn.
The study of conducting action research is invaluable and inspiring experience
that gives the researcher new knowledge. It is hoped that action research can be
implemented by other researchers to achieve a better teaching and learning process.
