1. M.V. Hindship is at anchor in SW, drawing 8m forward and aft. KG 6.5m, FSM 1000tm.
The
seabed is even and horizontal. At low water, the depth of water around the ship is expected
to drop to 7m. Find the virtual GM at LW.
2. M. V. Hindship drawing 5.2m forward and 7.8m aft in SW, KG 7.4m, FSM 1100tm runs aground
lightly on a sandy shoal. Soundings taken indicate that the depth of water near the after
perpendicular is one metre more than at forward perpendicular. If the tide is falling, calculate
a. the drop in water level at which the ship will sit overall on the sea-bed
b. the virtual GM when just sitting overall, and
c. the drop in water level at which the ship would become unstable.
3. A vessel of length 148m, LCF 70m, draft forward 8.00m, draft aft 9.80m, TPC 32, MCTC 264
lightly grounds on a gently sloping seabed. Sounding taken at that instant showed forward
depth as 8.00m and aft depth 10.9m. Find the drafts after tide falls by:
(i) 30 cm (ii) 2.00m
MMD April 2018, July 2018 (NOIDA 2nd sitting)
4. M.V. Hindship drawing 5.6m forward and 8.4m aft in SW, KG 7.2m, FSM 1200tm runs aground
lightly on an isolated rock during a falling tide. At low water, the drafts are found to be 6.0m
forward and 7.4m aft. Find the virtual GM at low water.
5. M.V. Hindship floating at 5.0m forward and 7.4m aft in SW, KG 7.5m, FSM 1000tm, runs
aground on a reef. After grounding, the drafts are found to be 4.0m forward and 7.6m aft.
Assuming that grounding has taken place at one point, surrounded by deep water all around,
Find:
a. the up-thrust exerted on the hull by the reef
b. the distance of point of grounding from AP
c. virtual GM after grounding, and
d. the rise of tide required for the ship to re-float assuming that the reef is acting only
at one point surrounded by deep water.
6. M.V. Hindship is at a SW anchorage, floating at drafts 5.4m forward and 7.4m aft, KG 7.70m,
FSM 800tm. During falling tide, she lightly grounds on an isolated rock 30m abaft the
forward perpendicular. The tide is expected to fall by another 0.6m. Assuming that hull
remains intact and there is deep water all around, find at low water:
a) upthrust exerted by the rock on the hull,
b) the virtual GM, and
c) drafts forward and aft.
