This document is a report submitted by Romel Leo B. Alojado to his professor Engr. Romel Leo B. Alojado at Iloilo Science and Technology University. The report demonstrates using Microsoft Excel Solver to optimize chemical engineering systems by determining compositions, flow rates, and mole fractions that satisfy constraints. It outlines objectives to showcase Excel Solver's use in optimization and identify equations needed to solve the objective cell. The methodology explains activating Excel Solver by installing the add-in through File and Options menus in Excel.

INTRODUCTION

In modeling the process systems, optimizing the design of a model system is necessary. It is a tool
used to by chemical engineers to make a decision. Finding the optimum solution translates into
maximum profit, maximum savings, maximum efficiency which is dependent on factor such as the
raw materials, size of process units, and number of the process units. Nonetheless, the optimal
design of a process unit is subjected to constraints. One way to optimize the design of a process
system is to use the Microsoft Excel Solver. Optimization is one of the purpose of MS Excel
Solver. The MS Excess Solver uses fast processing power to analyze the data rapidly in finding
the solution to complicated problems. In using MS Excel Solver, determination of the optimal
design of a process system that are subjected to constraints is possible

Objectives:

The activity aims to:

● To demonstrate the use of MS Excel Solver in optimizing chemical engineering systems

● To determine the compositions, flow rates, mole fractions of streams in a given process
by using MS Excel Solver
● To identify the equations needed from the problem given to be used as constraints in
solving the objective cell

METHODOLOGY

Usually the Excel Solver is not immediately available in Excel. It must be first installed and activated
to use it. To activate the Excel Solver, go to File menu on the upper left corner of Excel then select the
Options

Excel options box will appear then select the Add-Ins menu found on the left corner. After selecting the
Add-Ins, there will be a Manage box at the bottom. Select Excel Add-Ins then click Go.

The Add-ins window will appear then select the Solve Add-in box and click Ok.
