Tutorial Sheet 12

This document contains tutorial sheets on transistors and operational amplifiers. For transistors, it covers bipolar junction transistor construction and configurations, and their use as switches and amplifiers. For operational amplifiers, it introduces ideal op-amps and covers inverting amplifiers, non-inverting amplifiers, summing amplifiers, difference amplifiers, and applications. It includes example circuits and problems calculating output voltages and currents.

Transistor as a switch and as an amplifier. Field effect transistor construction and operation)
1. How transistor is classified?
2. What are the different configurations of a PNP transistor?
3. Explain the input output characteristics of PNP transistor in common base mode.
4. Explain the working of BJT transistor in common Emitter (CE) mode in detail. Draw input and
output characteristic of BJT in common emitter mode.

amplifier, Difference amplifier, Applications of Op-Amp)

1. What are the characteristics of an Ideal Operational Amplifier? List five applications of an Op-
Amp.
2. For the following circuit, if vi = 0.5 V, calculate: (a) the output voltage vo, and (b) the current in
the 10-kΩ resistor. [Ans: -1.25 V, 50 µA]

3. Calculate the output voltage, vo for the op-amp circuit as shown in below. [Ans: -1 V]

4. Find vo and io in the op-amp circuit shown in below. [Ans: -3.8 V, -1.425 mA]

5. Find out the output voltage expression for the difference (or differential) amplifier.
