Instructions for configuring IP manually
Meet Joshi 11/07/2018
Finding the IP
• Find the IP allocation table of your hostel from one of the following sources.
1. https://www.cc.iitb.ac.in/IP-Allocation/Hostel_ip_allocation.html
2. https://nms.iitb.ac.in/hostel-ip-allocation-scheme.php
• Find the IP range of your wing & floor and note the Network Mask & gateway from the
table.
• Suppose the range is 10.14.41.1 - 10.14.41.254, then your IP addres would be 10.14.41.xx,
where xx is last two digit of your room number.Ping to that IP address from some other
machine that is already connected to the IITB network in command prompt or terminal
as shown in the figure 1. See if you get any reply.(Note:You need to press ctrl + C to exit
from ping command.)
Figure 1: Ping reply from 10.14.45.250
• If you get a reply as shown in figure 1, that means someone is already using that IP
address. In that case ping to 10.14.41.1xx/10.14.41.2xx. See that there is no reply to ping
as shown in figure 2.
• When you don’t get a reply for a particular IP as shown in figure 2, that means that that
particular IP is not being used by anyone. Congratulations, you have got your IP. Now all
we have to do is configure it in your system.
