Drive Train Components & Functions

The drive train is the group of components that deliver power from the engine to the driving wheels. It excludes the engine but includes components like the transmission, driveshaft, rear axle, and differential. The drive train couples the engine to the wheels and allows the transmission to match the engine and wheel speeds through different gear ratios. Components of drive trains vary depending on whether it is manual or automatic transmission, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, or four-wheel drive.

Drive Train.

The mechanism that makes the vehicle move

The drivetrain of a motor vehicle is the group
of components that deliver power to the
driving wheels
Excludes the engine that generates the power
Both the engine and the drivetrain assembly is
called as power train

Functions of Drive Train.
 To couple the engine that produces the power to the
driving wheels that use this mechanical power to
rotate the axle
 This is achieved through propeller shaft and drive
shaft
 The operating speed of the engine and wheels are
also different and must be matched by the correct
gear ratio
 As the vehicle speed changes, the ideal engine speed
must remain approximately constant for efficient
operation and so this gearbox ratio must also be
changed, either manually, automatically or by an
automatic continuous variation.
