Example of Analysis of DRB Section

This document analyzes the moment resistance of a doubly reinforced concrete beam section. It provides the solution steps, which include: determining design constants, assuming a failure type, drawing a strain profile, using equilibrium equations to calculate unknown strain values, checking assumptions, and calculating beta and moment resistance values. The final moment resistance is calculated to be 286.71 kN-m.

ANALYSIS OF DOUBLE REINFORCED BEAM SECTION 2011/2018

Example: Determine the moment resistance of the doubly reinforced section shown in the figure below.
d = 500 mm, d2 = 50 mm, C20/25 and S -300.

Solution
a. Determine design constant
𝛼𝑐𝑐 𝑓𝑐𝑘 0.85∗20
fcd = = = 11.33MPa
𝑟𝑐 1.5
𝑓𝑦𝑘 300
fyd = = 1.15 = 260.87MPa
𝑟𝑠

b. Assume the type of failure

Assume tension failure with crushing of concrete and all of the provided steel has yielded.
c. Draw the strain profile corresponding to the type of failure and use the similarity of triangles to
develop a relationship between the unknown strain and the neutral axis.

From similarity of triangle

3.5+ 𝑠1 3.5 𝑥 3.5
= ------ = kx =
𝑑 𝑥 𝑑 3.5+ 𝑠1
3.5 𝑠2 3.5(𝑥−50)
= --------  𝑠2 =
𝑥 𝑥−50 𝑥
d. Use the equation of alpha corresponding to the assumption in ‘b’ and the relationship
developed in ‘c’ to calculate the unknown strain.

ANALYSIS OF DOUBLE REINFORCED BEAM SECTION 2011/2018

From equilibrium of forces,

Cc =𝑇𝑠 , But C c =  𝑐 𝑓𝑐𝑑 𝑏𝑑 + 𝐴𝑠2 𝑓𝑦𝑑 and 𝑇𝑠 = 𝐴𝑠1 𝑓𝑦𝑑
 𝑐 𝑓𝑐𝑑 𝑏𝑑 + 𝐴𝑠2 𝑓𝑦𝑑 = 𝐴𝑠1 𝑓𝑦𝑑
𝐴𝑠1 𝑓𝑦𝑑 −𝐴𝑠2 𝑓𝑦𝑑 ( 2581 −645 ) 87
𝑐 = 𝑓𝑐𝑑 𝑏𝑑
= 11.33∗280 ∗500 = 0.318

3𝑐𝑚 −2 3.5 3𝑐𝑚 −2

For  𝑐𝑚 >  𝑐2 ,  𝑐 = 𝑘𝑥 ( ) = (3.5+ ) ( )
3𝑐𝑚 𝑠1 3𝑐𝑚

3.5 3∗3.5−2 8.5

 𝑐= (3.5+ ) ( 3∗3.5
) = 10.5+3
𝑠1 𝑠1

10.5 𝑐 +3 𝑠1 𝑐 = 8.5

8.5−10.5 𝑐 8.5−10.5∗0.318
 𝑠1 = 3 𝑐
=
3 ∗0.318
= 5.41

 𝑠1 = 5.41‰
3.5 3.5
𝑘𝑥 = 3.5+ = 3.5+5.41 = 0.3928 and x = 𝑘𝑥 𝑑 = 196.41mm
𝑠1

35(𝑥−50) 35(196.41 −50)

 𝑠2 = 𝑥
= 196.41
= 2.609‰

e. Check if the assumption in ‘b’ is correct and if it is, proceed to next step. If the assumption is
not correct, repeat step ‘b’ to ‘e’ with another assumption.
𝑓𝑦𝑑 260 .87
 𝑦𝑑 = 𝐸𝑠
= 200 ∗ 103 = 1.304‰
 𝑠1 = 5.41‰ >  𝑦𝑑 = 1.304‰ ------ ok!
 𝑠2 = 2.609‰ >  𝑦𝑑 = 1.304‰ ------ ok!
Both Assumptions Are Correct!
f. Calculate the value of beta ( 𝑐 )

For  𝑐𝑚 >  𝑐2 ,

 ( 3𝑐𝑚 −4) +2
 𝑐 = 𝑘𝑥[( 𝑐𝑚
2 (3𝑐𝑚 −2)
)],
𝑚

Substituting the values of 𝑘𝑥 and  𝑐𝑚 yields,  𝑐 = 0.1634

g. Calculate the moment resistance (𝑀𝑟𝑑 )

𝑀𝑟𝑑 =  𝑐 𝑓𝑐𝑑 𝑏𝑑 2 (1 −  𝑐) + 𝐴𝑠2 𝑓𝑦𝑑 (d- 𝑑2 )
𝑀𝑟𝑑 = 0.318 * 11.33 * 280 *5002 (1 - 0.1634) + 645 *260.87*(500-50) = 286.71kN-m
