The Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjack Marching Band The SFA Lumberjack Marching Band is an organization of pride and distinction whose successful history is directly attributable to the quality efforts of everyone involved in the organization. It is the responsibility of each individual member of the 2009 LMB to uphold and expand the standard of excellence set by the bands of the past. Mission Statement The SFA Lumberjack Marching Band strives for the highest standards of excellence in music and marching while providing the following for each of its members: A musical/social/emotional outlet that compliments the academic pursuits of all members during their time at Stephen F. Austin State University. The opportunity to develop valuable skills necessary for success in any field or endeavor. These skills include time management, a strong work ethic, dependability, industry, interpersonal skills, and leadership.

We will succeed in this mission through effective planning, hard work, and by treating each other with respect at all times. The SFA Band Handbook This handbook is designed to cover many of the policies set forth by the Stephen F. Austin State University Bands. It is not possible to cover every single policy in a small document, and our intent is not to provide a law book for band; rather it is to provide a guideline for school and band policy. Students are expected to follow these guidelines as closely as possible. If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to ask a student leader or a director. It is assumed that members will abide by the spirit of each of these guidelines and remember that each member individually represents the entire band and Stephen F. Austin State University in his or her actions.

Grading Policy Attendance Marching Band is a group activity whose success depends on every members contribution. Therefore, it is crucial that every member attend every rehearsal; unexcused absences will not be tolerated. Any unexcused absence from rehearsal will result in a students grade being lowered by one letter. Any unexcused absence from a performance will result in a failing grade for the semester. Absences will not be considered for excused status unless they are filed with the band office 24 hours prior to the absence. NOTE: Excused/unexcused absence status will be determined solely by the band director. Examples of excused absences include illness (with documentation), hospitalization, approved University sponsored functions, and death in the immediate family.

Music All music for every show will be memorized and passed off Thursday of game week. Students will pass off to section/squad leaders, and section/squad leaders will pass off to directors, graduate or undergraduate teaching assistants. Non-memorization of assigned music will result in a lowered class grade. Daily Preparation In order for The Lumberjack Marching Band to look and sound its best, each member must be prepared on a daily basis. Daily preparation includes having all equipment; music, flip folder, lyre, instrument, pencil and coordinate cards, etc. Failure to be prepared in rehearsal and on game-day, in the described fashion, will result in a lowered class grade. These materials checks can/will occur at the directors discretion and will be completed by the operations manager and/or teaching assistants.

Code of Conduct As representatives of Stephen F. Austin State University, The Lumberjack Marching Band is expected to maintain the highest standards of conduct; the following guidelines are provided with that in mind. In the Stands Exemplary sportsmanship will be exhibited at all times. We are there to cheer for the Lumberjacks, not against the opponent. Foul or malicious language, racial epithets, etc. will not be tolerated. If this language is observed by directors, band staff, or LMB Leadership, immediate ejection from the game will result and your class grade will be affected negatively. Members will remain in assigned seating until dismissed by the drum major or directors. Take care of your instrument and uniform at all times. Exhibit pride in yourselves, your band and your University. Alcohol-related violations The University policy on alcohol is delineated in the SFA Student Handbook. Evidence of alcohol abuse, including alcohol on the breath, minor in possession, or physical impairment will result in immediate expulsion from the band and automatic referral to the dean of student development. Mandatory counseling, assessment and treatment may follow this referral. This policy extends to all band rehearsals, performances and band functions.

The entire uniform (except for the hat) will be worn during games and other performances, unless otherwise instructed by the director. Summer Uniform Note: All LMB polos must be tucked in FULLY into the shorts, not the roll-under, half-tuck. Have a degree of integrity with this matter. You will be asked to address the matter if it arises. All members must wear an official LMB t-shirt under the uniform. NOTE: You can wear any year LMB t-shirt (i.e., the 2008 shirt can be worn during the 2009 year, etc.) AS LONG AS the shirt is not completely faded and the shirts color is in good shape. In order for us to remove our jackets at hot events, the band must remain uniform. This is the only purple t-shirt allowed under the uniform. If you are caught wearing a Beat the H*ll Out of Sam, Purple Haze, etc. shirt instead of an official LMB t-shirt, you will be asked to put your uniform jacket back on. Thanks in advance for your compliance. Uniforms must be kept in good condition at all times. Most importantly, when the uniform is removed after the performance, hang it up immediately, leaving the coat open to dry properly. Uniforms are not to be tossed in trunks, backseats, etc. YOU are financially responsible for all things you check out. LMB Handbook Page 10

School Instruments and Equipment All instruments are issued in good working order. If you discover something wrong, let a band manager know immediately! You are responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of any horn or equipment issued to you. If it is damaged or mistreated, you are responsible for repair costs. Before checking an instrument in, the instrument must be thoroughly cleaned and properly oiled and greased. No instrument will be accepted until the maintenance is complete. Equipment Check-In Deadlines All school equipment, locks, music, instruments, etc. are due by the Friday, December 4, 2009 in the managers office, unless otherwise posted. If you must withdraw from school, change your major, or drop out of a class for which you have checked out equipment, the equipment is due before withdrawal. If you non-compliant with this matter, your school account will be assessed the necessary fees and/or a hold may be place on your ability to register for future classes. Music Any member of the LMB can access their music through MyCourses. The address to use for MyCourses: http://mycourses.sfasu.edu. If a member does not report to rehearsal with all necessary music, it will affect their daily grade. If you have questions concerning part assignments or music in general, ask your section leader. Do not wait until the next rehearsal. All music must be placed in a marching flip folder for rehearsals and performance. Students are responsible for having them at every rehearsal and game. (See Grading Policy) Instruments and Lockers Instruments and lockers are available through the managers office for use during school terms. Go to the managers office in room 121A with your student ID. Book lockers are available through the music office. NOTE: No equipment will be used without a valid ID.
