SPM Lab File

The document describes three experiments conducted using MS Project: 1. Developing a simple network diagram showing the links between project activities and their predecessor/successor relationships. 2. Recreating the network diagram after adding duration estimates, identifying how MS Project determines activity start/finish dates. The critical path is identified. 3. Entering additional information on predecessor tasks and resources assigned to activities to produce a Gantt chart, noting that one resource has been assigned more tasks than others.

1. Consider the following information that you have compiled
regarding the steps needed to complete a project. You have
identified all relevant steps and have made some
determination regarding predecessor/successor
relationships. Using MS Project, develop a simple network
diagram for this project, showing the links among the project
activities.

2. Suppose that we add some duration estimates to each

activity. A portion of the revised table is shown here.
Recreate the network diagram for this project and how MS
Project uses nodes to identify activity duration, start, and
finish dates and predecessors. What is the critical path for
this diagram? How do we know?

3. Refer to the Activity Network shown here in the table.

Suppose that we have modified the original table slightly to
show the predecessor relationship between tasks and
resources assigned to perform these activities. Enter the
information using MS Project to produce Gantt Chart.
Assume that each resource has assigned to the project
activity on full time basis.
Experiment – 1
 Aim : Consider the following information that you have
compiled regarding the steps needed to complete a project.
You have identified all relevant steps and have made some
determination regarding predecessor/successor relationships.
Using MS Project, develop a simple network diagram for this
project, showing the links among the project activities.
 Software Required : MS Project
 Theory : MS Project is a very handy tool for project managers,
that help them develop a schedule, assign resources to tasks,
track the progress of work, manage the budget and analyze the
workloads for ongoing project. As the resources are assigned
to tasks, and assignment, work estimated, the program
calculates the cost, equal to work times the rate, which rolls up
to the task and finally to the project level. Resource rates are
used to calculate resource assignments costs which are rolled
and summarized at the resource level. The applications creates
critical path schedules and critical chain and event chain
technology. Schedules can be resource levelled and chains are
visualized in a Gantt chart.

Activity Predecessors
A- Survey Site -------------
B- Install Sewer and Storm A
Drainage
C- Install Gas and electric A
power lines
D-Excavate site for spec B, C
house
E- Excavate site for spec D
house
 Steps Involved :
Step 1: Opened MS Project and Started a new window.
Step 2: In the left half of the window consisting the chart, we
added columns like Activity Name, Duration, Start and Finish
Dates, Predecessor, Successor dates.
Step 3: We mentioned or labelled the first row of table as
“Project” and subsequently wrote the activities mentioned in
the table above.
Step 4: We then identified the activities to the right, in order to
lie inside the cell project.
Step 5: The sub activities will then be changed from manual
task to automatic task.
Step 6: After converting the subtasks to auto schedule, the date
of start and finish are automatically generated.
Step 7: After auto-scheduling the tasks, the Gantt Chart is seen
to be formed.
Step 8: We introduced two more columns predecessor and
successor.
Step 9: The predecessor tasks are the ones, that preceding or
are scheduled before a particular task. Successor tasks are the
ones that are scheduled after a particular task gets completed.

been assigned more tasks to be performed than other resources
involved.

the scheduler in order to divide the tasks equally among the
resources assigned.

 Conclusion : It is inferred that the resource Tom Hodges has

been assigned more tasks than other resources, and an alert
symbol can be seen against its name.
