in a manner that shows respect.
Content Summary:
What is a Conflict?
A Conflict is a disagreement between two or more people or between two or more choices.
When two or more people have different thought processes, attitudes, understanding, interests,
requirements, beliefs or attitudes about something, conflict can occur.
A conflict results in heated arguments, physical abuses and definitely loss of peace and harmony. A
conflict can actually change relationships. Friends can become foes as a result of conflict
Nature of Conflict
In simple words, social conflict is always present in social life. It is a fundamental feature of human
society. It does not occur because people are unreasonable or uncooperative or because they are
unwilling to live properly and decently with others. Conflicts are a natural part of life. It is rooted in
persona and social differences. Conflict is a natural response in humans, in the face of stressful
situations.
Importance of Resolving Conflicts
It strengthens relationships
Reduces incidents of bullying
Inhibits physical confrontations
It builds assertiveness skill
It promotes group cohesiveness and collaboration
What to do if conflict arise
There are many practical ways to treat conflict. There are things we should do and not do in order to
deal with conflicts. The Life skill conflict resolution if practiced is chief among the strategies for
dealing with conflicts.
Conflict Resolution Skill – enables individuals to reach a peaceful resolution to a dispute.
Steps in Conflict Resolution Skill
Calm down
Agree to discuss the problem
Tell what‘s bothering you using “I” messages
Each person restates what they heard the other person say
Take responsibility for your part of the problem
Brainstorm solutions and come up with one that satisfies both people
Affirm, forgive, or say thanks
The Value of Respect – Showing considerate and polite attitude toward people as well having
regards for another’s feelings and thoughts.

Engagement:
Students will be engaged with singing of a song

Song will be sung once or twice following which teacher will ask students to share words that come
to their minds when they hear the word conflict
Teacher will share own listing to contextualize the concept
Problem Statement: Students often get into conflicts and have difficulty resolving them.
Teacher will introduce the topic of the lesson, and the objectives. The dominant life skill and value
will also be stated and the ground rules for participation in class shared.
Exploration:
Students will engaged in a game of True or False where a list of statements will be read and
students will be asked to say whether each statement is true or false.

A discussion will be conducted to add clarifying information about conflict, what it is, the types of
conflict and strategies used to resolve them. Based on this discussion, students will draw a concept
map to graphically explain the importance of resolving conflicts as shown in the example below:
Students will be asked to explain their understanding of the value respect as it relates to resolving
conflicts.
Reflective Questions: How do I currently deal with conflicts? How will the value, respect help me
to resolve conflicts?
Explanation-Life Skill Development Stage:
The steps of conflict resolution skill will be displayed or shared via a preferred online platform for
students to view. Questions and or clarifications of steps will be used to prompt students and to
process the steps of the life skill in order that a clear connection can be made with the life skill as a
means of properly resolving conflicts.

Reflective Question: How can I show respect for others when I am using conflict resolution skill?
Elaboration:
On a blank paper students will draw a pizza outline with six slices. To this pizza, they will add
toppings to each slice in the form of words related to conflict resolution
Different colours can be used to write words to make pizza colourful.
Possible Pizza Toppings for Resolving Conflicts
-Negotiate - Peaceful
-Care - Respect
-Agreement - Compromise
Students will be asked to show how they will use their selected toppings (conflict resolution words)
in applying the steps of conflict resolution to address a dispute with a peer or a family member.
Evaluation:
What Would You Do?
Students will be presented with a case scenario about individuals having conflict. Students will use
the steps in conflict resolution skill and the value, respect to arrive at a solution to the problem.
Case Scenario
Rasheed went to the cafeteria to purchase his lunch. Just as he got his lunch and was walking to an
empty seat to have it, Raymond bumped into him and caused his lunch to fall to the ground spilling
all the contents from the box. Rasheed was furious and started pushing and shouting at Raymond,
who was trying to apologize but Raymond was way too upset to even hear him. Some students in
the cafeteria started shouting ‘fight, fight, fight!!’
Activity – Read the case scenario then use the steps in conflict resolution skill along with the value
respect to help Rasheed and Raymond. This can be presented using a story, comic strip, poem, dub
poem or any other creative means. Use the rubric below to guide how your presentation will be
assessed.
