Volcano Model Guide Questions

The document summarizes a student's observations from a volcano model experiment and a real volcanic eruption video. The student observed the model eruption was caused by the reaction of baking soda and vinegar, producing carbon dioxide gas. A real eruption would involve ash clouds, rumbling sounds, rotten egg smells, and felt heat. Volcanic eruptions can endanger health through toxins, floods, mudslides and contaminate water. Eruptions reshape the surrounding area through lava, pyroclastic flows and debris. Volcanic eruptions are caused by molten magma rising to the surface from the earth's mantle, or by water interacting with hot magma to create eruptive steam pressure.

  • Volcano Model Guide Questions: Provides questions for guided observations and analysis of a volcano model experiment, covering sensory details, predictions, and safety considerations.

“ Volcano Model ”

GUIDE QUESTIONS

1. What did you observe? Record your observations. Why did the volcano model
erupt? Which chemicals reacted? Did the simulation in the model look, feel and
smell like a real volcanic eruption?
- A red liquid with some bubbles in it comes out of the model immediately, this shows the
eruption of the volcano . The vinegar was poured into the baking soda causing it to
explode. The baking soda (carbonate), reacted quickly as soon as the acid (vinegar) came
in contact with it. In this reaction, the carbon dioxide gas is produced, pressure builds up
inside the plastic bottle until the gas bubbles out of the volcano.

2. Now, watch a video of a real volcanic eruption. Observe the characteristics of the
eruption and record your observations beside or below your observations of the
model “volcano”. Based on the video, what would a real volcanic eruption sound
like? How would it feel and smell like?
- The volcanic eruption I watched in a video has a lot of moving thick clouds surrounding
it, those are actually ashes produced as soon as a volcano explodes. It would probably
sound like a bomb exploding, I can also hear some rumbling and roaring like an engine
based from the footage that I watched. Many said that a volcanic eruption also actually
smells like a rotten eggs. We would obviously feel hot if a volcano explodes near us, and
earthquakes can also be felt which is more frightening that many could imagine.

3. Based on the video, what are some of the consequences of a volcanic eruption?
How would it change the area surrounding it?
- Volcanic eruptions can result in additional threats to health, such as floods, mudslides,
power outages, drinking water contamination, and wildfires. Volcanic gases expelled
during eruptions can be highly toxic for humans if their concentrations are high, irritating
the eyes and to the skin. Several hazards may affect the area around the volcano, such as
lava flows, pyroclastic flows, lahars, and debris avalanches.

4. What do you think causes volcanic eruptions? ( Search for the scientific
explanation to this question )
- A volcano can explode if the magma goes up to the surface. The molten rock magma is
formed when the earth's mantle melts. Another way an eruption happens is when water
underneath the surface interacts with hot magma and creates steam, this can build up
enough pressure to cause an explosion.
