Activity 1.1: Am I Spontaneous or Not?
Objective: Identify spontaneous processes
Directions: Read and analyse the following reactions. Classify them whether they are
SPONTANEOUS or NON-SPONTANEOUS process. Write the letter of your
answer in the correct column.
A. spoiled meat does not become fresh again
B. classrooms effortlessly become organize
C. burning of fuel Spontaneous Non-spontaneous
D. softening of chocolates at room temperature A H B
E. flow of heat from cold pan to a hot pan D J C
F. evaporation of water E K
G. mixing of gases in the atmosphere F
H. the flow of water up in the mountain G
I. adult mam will not return as a boy
J. air does not rush in to fill in a deflated balloon.
In your own words, how do you differentiate spontaneous and non-spontaneous
reactions?
A spontaneous reaction happens naturally while non-spontaneous only happens when it
is being controlled by a certain human or dog.
Activity 1.2: Bouncy Balls!
Objectives: Predict the spontaneity of a process based on entropy
Determine whether entropy increases or decreases if the following are changed:
temperature, phase, number of particles
Directions: Read and analyze the set up below. Answer the questions that follow.
Guide Questions:
1. Based on set-up A, there are 9 balls in the reactant side, and due to the increase
in gravitational potential energy on the left side, there are more balls moved on
the product side. What process in involved in this set-up? Non spontaneous
2. In set-up B, there are 19 balls on the reactant side and we reduce the energy on
the left side. What will happen on the product side? Nothing will happen
3. Compare the two set-ups, which one has a spontaneous process? Set up B
How did you say so? Because on set-up a, there are increase in gravitational potential
energy on the left side, there are more balls moved on the product side.
Generalization:
In spontaneous process, there is a DECREASE in enthalpy and INCREASE in entropy.
increase or decrease
