TITLE: Improving the Cleanliness and Usability of toilets in Public schools
I- Introduction
In schools, the needs of the students should be given priority. And I think
That comfort is what we need as students. However, most schools, particularly public
schools, fall short of providing students with adequate comfort. Currently, one of the
major issues at our school is the uncleanliness and lack of functional comfort rooms.
We do have comfort rooms on every floor of our building, but as of today, they were all
closed for what I assume to be a water-related problem, and this causes a lot of
problems for us, such as having to go to another building or another side of the school
just to utilize a proper and functional comfort room. Students have been vocal about this
issue, but the school has no plans yet on how to solve it. According to rumors, our
building's comfort rooms were closed because water from the upper floors accumulated
on the first floor, which could lead to an overflow. In this situation, the school should
now make plans for how this problem will be solved for the sake of everyone and to
ensure the students’ comfort.
II- Objectives of the Study
The following are the objectives of the study:
a. to examine the specific factors that contribute to the cause of unsanitary toilets
in public schools.
b. to determine the causes of the lack of toilets in public schools.
c. to explore ideas for sustainable improvement in terms of toilet issues in public
schools.
III-Research Questions
The primary goal of this study is to investigate the causes and effects of a lack of
hygienic restrooms in public schools. Specifically, it will attempt to answer the following
questions:
1. Ensure the maintenance of the comfort rooms for public schools in terms of:
1.1 Implementing regulations to prevent deterioration of toilets condition
1.2 maintaining cleanliness
2. additional comfort rooms
IV- Review of Related Literature
1.1 Implementing regulations to prevent deterioration of toilets condition. Access
to usable water, sanitation, and hygiene provision in schools is included as an indicator
in the Sustainable Development Goals. Understanding which intervention components
are most useful for running and maintaining usable services is necessary for progress
toward these indicators. This study aims to assess the effects of a school toilet
operation and management intervention in the Philippines on toilet usage and student
and teacher satisfaction, adjusted for clustering at the school level.
1.2 Maintaining Cleanliness the overall purpose of good sanitation is to provide a
healthy living environment for everyone, protect natural resources such as surface
water, groundwater, and soil, and provide safety, security, and dignity for people when
they defecate or urinate.
2. Additional Comfort rooms. Adding another comfort room to a school is a big help to
the students on campus. It will help students avoid falling in line in a narrow comfort
room.
V-Method
This study will employ quantitative research design utilizing descriptive and
correlational approaches. The respondents of this study will be the senior high school
students from selected public senior high schools in Tagum City Division for the school
year 2022-2023. This study will use two adapted research questionnaires and quarter
grades in PE as instruments.
VI- Significance of the Study
The following will benefit from the study:
a. Students. ( Having access to clean water and toilets has meant the students can
spend more time in class)
b. Teachers. (Comfort room is essential to them, just like brushing their teeth,
peeing and fixing their attires and makeups)
c. School Administration. (Being clean is important, such as by using sanitizers
and clean water to reduce the students’ risk of infection and illness)
VII-Expected Outcomes
The following are the expected outcomes:
a. The probability that students may contract a water-borne illness and miss a day of
class is lower.
b. Students won't need to go around the opposite side of the building to find a restroom
that is open.
c. Students can arrive at their planned class on time since they don't have to wait in line
for a functional restroom.
