OMEGLE

Lariana Núñez conducted an evaluation of the online chatting platform Omegle. She had video calls with several individuals from different countries, including a 16-year-old girl from London named Emily, a man from the United States living in Canada named Richard, and a 13-year-old boy from Oklahoma named Noah. Due to internet connection issues, most of the calls were cut short. Lariana also spoke with two young girls from Mexico who used Omegle to practice English. While Lariana enjoyed meeting new people and practicing her language skills, she noted Omegle brings together people of all ages not always with the same friendly intentions.

REPORT

I started by using a website that has been very popular as of 2020 thanks to the tiktok
platform, its name is Omegle, it brings together random users from different parts of the world to
chat online via text, video-calls or both. A user can also choose to add their interests and the
platform will try to match a user with someone who has similar interests.

When I started it was a bit slow due to the internet and I waited around five minutes to be
able to talk to someone, the first video call I managed to have was with a 16 year old London born
girl called Emily, at first I couldn't understand some things she was saying but as time went on I
managed to attach myself, it was the longest conversation I had, as with the others they were cut
off because of the signal. I started by introducing myself and telling her if she could help me
practice my English and that it was an academic activity, so she accepted, Emily asked me my
country of origin and when I told her, she told me that she has always wanted to visit it, she has
seen pictures of the places and she thinks it is a very beautiful country, then we continued talking
about the pandemic, Prince Philip and his death and at the end we said goodbye but we gave each
other our users to follow each other on Instagram so we don't lose contact, I was pleased to have
a good friend, although it was very difficult for me to understand her some words.

After a long conversation it was my turn to talk with Richard from the United States but he
currently lives in Canada with his family, with him I couldn't talk for long due to the internet, we
talked about how Canada was and his interests, he told me he liked sports although "it was better
watching it on TV than practicing it". The transmission was cut off and 7 minutes later I established
connection with 13 year old Noah born in Oklahoma we talked only two minutes about what he
liked to do and he told me that he really enjoyed swimming and the connection again didn't allow
me to say goodbye to the boy.
I finished my tour of Omegle with two young girls from Mexico but they speak English
since they were little, at the end I didn't know if they were sisters, cousins or friends, since they
played a lot with that, we talked in English and in Spanish they also told me that they use Omegle
because it is a platform where they practice their English and also they have made many friends
there, although they have had some unpleasant surprises because it is a place that brings together
many people of all ages and not many have the same intention to get new friends.

In the end I had fun in this evaluation, using this website was nice because despite the bad
internet connection I was able to talk to new people, and I would use it again in the future to
practice more the language.
