1. Calculate the value of fractional relative refractive index for a step index optical fibre having core &
cladding refractive indices 1.55 and 1.50 respectively. Ans. 0.032

2. Calculate the N.A., acceptance angle, and the critical angle of the fibre from the given data: µ 1 (core
refractive index) = 1.50 and µ2 (cladding ref. Index) = 1.45 Ans. 0.385, 22.630, 75.30
3. If the fractional difference between the core and cladding refractive indices of a fibre is 0.0135 and N.A.
is 0.2425. Calculate the refractive indices of the core and cladding materials. Ans. µ1 = 1.476, µ2 = 1.456
4 A step index fibre has core refractive index 1.466, cladding refractive index 1.46. If the operating
wavelength of the rays is 0.85 µ, calculate the cut – off parameter and the number of modes, which the
fibre will support. The diameter of the core = 50 µm. Ans. v = 24.75, N = 30

5. The optical power, after propagating through a fibre that is 500 m long is reduced to 25% of its original
value. Calculate the fibre loss in dB/km. Ans. 12.042 dB/km
