Major Insects Pest of Rice

Common Name: Apple Snail (Golden Apple Snail, Channeled Apple

Snail)

Scientific Name: Pomacea canaliculata

Brief Description of Damage: The golden apple snail eats young and
emerging riceplants and can completely destroy a crop during crop
establishment.

Control: The golden apple snail can be managed through

biological, cultural, and chemical controls. One biological control is introducing ants that feed on the snail
eggs and ducks that eat the young snails.

Common Name: Black bug

Scientific Name: Proxys punctulatus

Brief Description of Damage: Browning of leaves or dead heart or

bugburn.

Control: Insecticide endosulfan 35EC 0.20% whorl application.

Common Name: Rice stink bug

Scientific Name: Oebalus pugnax

Brief Description of Damage: Rice stink bug adults migrate from wild
grasses to sorghum and rice when plants begins to develop kernels or
develop in and around fields on wild host plants. Wild host plants
include barnyard grass and sedge (Cyperus sp.).

Control: Insecticide application for control of stink bugs in many crops

is often warranted.
Major Insects Pest of Corn

Common Name: Corn Leafhoppers

Scientific Name: Dalbulus maidis
Brief Description of Damage: Corn leafhopper causes damage in two
ways. First, leafhoppers directly feed on the plant, sucking out juices.
Heavy populations can cause the leaves to dry; also, both the adults and
nymphs produce sticky honeydew while they feed, which gets on the
corn leaves.
Control: Due to the variable regulations around (de-registration of
pesticides, we are for the moment not including any specific chemical
control recommendations.

Common Name: Lesser cornstalk borer

Scientific Name:  Elasmopalpus lignosellus

Brief Description of Damage: Damage can be slight, or it can kill the

plant. Damage is most prevalent during drought conditions in crops
grown on sandy soil.

Control: Cultural practices, such as clean cultivation and weed

destruction along fence rows, have long been recommended for lesser
cornstalk borer control.

Common Name: Corn leaf aphid

Scientific Name: Rhopalosiphum maidis

Brief Description of Damage: Corn leaf aphid infestations usually start in

the plant whorl. Heavy infestations may curl leaves and stunt the plant.
Heavy amounts of sooty mold may be more damaging to silage corn than to
corn for grain.

Control: Chemical control, this pest is easily controlled by contact or

systemic insecticides.
Major Insects Pest of Mango

Common Name: Leaf gall midge

Scientific Name:  Procantarinia sp.
Brief Description of Damage:  The damage of cecid fly is
usually associated with galling of young leaves, infested fruits
produce circular, brown to black, scab-like spots randomly
distributed on the fruit surface.
Control: Young leaves are very attractive for egg laying.
Spraying Sevin, Decis, Karate, and Stingray (3 to 4 tbsp per 16
L of water) will minimize damage. Spray insecticides in the
afternoon, preferably 5:00 to 6:00 pm.

Common Name: Mango weevil

Scientific Name: Cryptorhynchus mangiferae
Brief Description of Damage: Mango weevil does not
damage to the fruit but when larvae penetrate the flesh,
secondary microbial attack make the fruit to be rotten.
Control: Chemical sprays used to control other mango pests
can also control seed weevil.

Common Name: Blossom leafhopper, Mango leafhopper

Scientific Name: Idioscopus clypealis
Brief Description of Damage : Nymphs and adults damage the
flowers by piercing the tissues and sucking the plant sap which
causes withering, drying and falling of individual flowers.
Control: Spray insecticide directed to the nymphal stages
rather than the adults, hence, detection of this stage is
important.
Major Insects Pest of Durian

Common Name: Durian Mealybugs

Scientific Name: Two species of mealybugs are identified as
pests of Durian: Planococcus lilacinus
Brief Description of Damage:Mealybugs suck juices from
flower branches, young fruits and mature fruits
Control: Conserve the natural enemies of mealybugs by
avoiding the use of pesticides.

Common Name: Durian fruit borer

Scientific Name: Conogethes punctiferalis
Brief Description of Damage: Infection of fruits can often
be recognized by the faeces of caterpillars that can be seen on
the outside of the fruits.
Control: Light trapping to reduce adult population and
remove and burn or bury infested and fallen fruits.

Common Name: Shothole Borer

Scientific Name: Scolytus rugulosus
Brief Description of Damage: The adults damage trees by
drilling small, round holes in the bark as they enter and exit.
Control: Keep trees as vigorous as possible by utilizing an
organic fertilizing program.  White wash the lower trunk and
branches to discourage egg laying.  Prune and burn during
the winter any limbs with shot holes.
Major Insects Pest of Pumelo

Common Name: Leaf-footed bug

Scientific Name: Leptoglossu  species
Brief Description of Damage: May cause the fruit be deformed or
drop.
Control: Apply chemical control if insect populations are high
- Cypermethrin (Ammo®, Cymbush®)
- esfenvalerate (Asana®)
- carbaryl (Sevin®) applied for other pests may also control stink
bugs and leaffooted bug.

Common Name: Brown marmorated stink bug

Scientific Name: Halyomorpha halys
Brief Description of Damage: Stink bugs use these mouthparts in
a straw-like fashion by piercing the fruit. Small necrotic spots on
fruit and leaf surfaces often result from feeding damage, and it
may be compounded by secondary infections and scarring as the
fruit matures.
Control: The use of insecticides has very short-lived effect and
there is evidence of resistance development.

Common Name: Green stink bug

Scientific Name: Nezara viridula
Brief Description of Damage: The damage on fruit from the
punctures is hard brownish or black spots. These punctures affect
the fruit's edible qualities and decidedly lower its market value.
Control: Chemical control the use of trap crops is not a widely
accepted idea for control of the southern green stink bug, but it has
excellent potential as a type of control.
Major Insects Pest of Banana

Common Name: Banana Mealybugs

Scientific Name: Phenacoccus ssp.
Brief Description of Damage: Mealybugs damage plants by
sucking sap from roots, tender leaves, petioles and fruit.
Control: When necessary, spray with soapy solutions (1 to
2%) or insecticidal soaps. Spraying with a soap and water
solution is reported to control mealybugs. Whenever
possible, spray only infested plants (spot spraying).

Common Name: Banana aphid

Scientific Name: Pentalonia nigronervosa
Brief Description of Damage: Their feeding may cause
rolling, twisting or bending of leaves. Heavily attacked
leaves can turn yellow and eventually wilt.
Control: Spray only if aphid problem is severe. Avoid
regular spraying as this will remove beneficial insects and
may induce other pest problems.

Common Name: Banana-root Borer

Scientific Name: Cosmopolites sordidus
Brief Description of Damage : Extensive feeding damage by
grubs results in root destruction, slowed plant growth,
reduced fruit production, and, sometimes, toppled plants.
Control:Effective control was obtained by spraying the bases
of plants and surrounding soil to a radius of 30 cm in spring
and autumn with pirimiphos-ethyl and chlorpyrifos emulsions
at 2.24 kg active ingredient ha-1 per application.
Major Insects Pest of Coconut

Common Name: Coconut leaf beetle

Scientific Name: Brontispa longissima
Brief Description of Damage: This beetle causes extreme damage
in the coconut palm tree. Both the larvae and adult beetles eat the
soft tissue of the young leaves, which are located in the throat of the
palm tree.
Control: Trunk injection and spraying of insecticides are
implemented by PCA to fast rack the mitigation of infestation and
spread of the pest and allow recovery of damaged trees.

Common Name: Rhinocerus Beetle

Scientific Name: Xyloryctes jamaicensis
Brief Description of Damage: Coconut rhinoceros beetle adults
damage palms by boring into the center of the crown, where they
injure the young, growing tissues and feed on the exuded sap.
Control: Various methods are practiced to control the
rhinoceros beetle which includes releasing of
Oryctes Baculovirus (originally discovered in
Malaysia) which multiplies in the larval fat body
and intestinal epithelium of larvae and adults.

Common Name: Red Palm Weevil

Scientific Name: Rhynchophorus furrugineus
Brief Description of Damage: Red palm weevil is one of the most
destructive pests of coconut, oil palms and ornamental palms. The
grubs cause damage inside the stem or crown by feeding on soft
tissues and often cause severe damage especially when a large
number of them bore into the soft, growing parts.
Control: Chemical Control
        A- Preventive.
        B- Curative.
