ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I WOULD LIKE TO CONVEY MY SPECIAL
THANKS TO OUR CHEMISTRY TEACHER
[Link] UNDER WHOSE
GUIDANCE AND SUPERVISION ,I HAVE
COMPLETED THIS PROJECT
SUCCESSFULLY. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK
OUR CHEMISTR LAB ASSISTANT, WHO
PROVIDED ME ALL COMPONENTS
NEEDED FOR THIS PROJECT. I WOULD
ALSO LIKE TO GIVE MY SINCERE THANKS
TO OUR LIBRARIAN FOR PROVIDING MR
ALL THE BOOKS NEEDED FOR THIS
PROJECT.
AT LAST, I WISH TO THANKS OUR
PRINCIPAL SIR MR. GOPAL DHAWAN
WHOSE BLESSINGS ARE ALWAYS WITH
ME.

‘TO IDENTIFY THE PRESENCE OF
DIFFERENT ELEMENTS PROCLAIMED IN
HEALTH DRINKS (HORLICKS).’
INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY
1. The introduction of energy drinks in India was
through the British rule in early 1940s.
2. Punjab, Bengal and Madras presidencies became
early adopters of energy drinks. It was majorly
used in the world war as energy supplement.
Moreover, it became sort of status symbol in
upper middle class and rich classes. Beginning of
health drinks was also highly profitable many
Multinational companies launched their brands in
India.
3. The earliest to arrive was Horlicks with malt
flavour.
4. Nowadays, many brand has been introduced such
as Horlicks etc.
5. The claimed objective of these brands is to provide
vital nutrients to children with milk whose diet is
lacking or certain health condition cause an
insufficiency or deficiency.
6. Mostly they provide both micro and macro
nutrients to a child’s body for its complete
development.
Theory
CONTENTS:
1.) Micro nutrients :(A, B6, B12, C, D, E etc.),
copper, folic acid, selenium, zinc.
2.) Macro nutrients: phosphorus, calcium,
magnesium, sulphur etc.
3.) Others: protein, carbohydrate, fibre, sugar.
BENEFITS AND PURPOSES CLAIMED:
1.) Increases the density of minerals such as
calcium in bones to give children bigger
and stronger bones
2.) Increases lean tissue, making muscles
stronger.
3.) Helps improvement in concentration.
APPARATUS REQUIRED
1.) Test tube
2.) Test Tube Holder
3.) Test Tube Stand
4.) Distilled water
5.) Beaker
6.) Burner
7.) pH paper
8.) Tripod Stand
9.) China Dish

CHEMICALS REQUIRED
1.) SULPHURIC ACID (DILUTE AND
CONC.)
2.) HCL (DILUTE)
3.) H2S (GAS)
4.) CONC. HNO3
5.) SOLID AMMONIUM CHLORIDE
6.) AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE
7.) NaOH
8.) PbO
9.) AMMONIUM CARBONATE
10.) AMMONIUM HYDROGEN
PHOSPHATE
11.) FEHLING A SOLUTION
12.) FEHLING B SOLUTION
DETECTION OF PH
EXPERIMENT
PROCEDURE:
Small samples of Horlicks was taken in a test tube.
The change in colour of pH was noticed and was
compared with the standard pH scale.
OBSERVATION:
Colour observed of pH paper on dropping a drop
of solution: Dark Green
RESULT: Horlicks
is basic in nature
TEST FOR CARBOHYDRATE
USING FEHLING’S TEST
APPARATUS REQUIRED: Test tube , beaker , burner ,
water bath.
CHEMICALS REQUIRED: Distilled water,
Fehling A (17.5 gm CUSO4+ 250 ml H2O + H2SO4(2 drops),
Fehling B (86.5 gm sodium potassium tartrate + 30 gm
NaOH + 250 ml H20)
THEORY:
CHO-(CHOH)4—CH2OH + CU(OH) + NaOH
COO-Na+ --(CHOH)4—CH2OH + H2O + CU2O
END POINT: Red colour PPT.
PROCEDURE: Keep the Horlicks solution and Fehling’s A
and Fehling’s B solution in boiling water bath. Wait till red
PPT. is observed.
RESULTS: Red PPT. was observed after a while.
Carbohydrates is present in Horlicks.
TEST FOR VARIOUS ANIONS
AND CATIONS IN THE
SOLUTION OF HORLICKS
ANALYSIS FOR ANION
EXPERIMENT OBSERVATION INFERENCE
CO32- , NO2 , S2 ,
DILUTE H2SO4 NO EFFECT SO32- , CH3C00-
TEST ARE ABSENT
CONCENTRATED NO EFFECT Cl-, Br-, I-,
H2SO4 NO3- ARE
ABSENT
TEST FOR THE PRESENCE
OF FATS
1.) MATERIALS REQUIRED: Filter
paper.
2.) PROCEDURE: Take some Horlicks.
Add 2-3 drops of water.
Place it over the filter paper.
Wait till the filter water evaporates.
3.) OBSERVATION: Oily patches on
the filter paper.
4.) RESULT: Fats are present in sample
of Horlicks.
RESULTS
1.) FOLLOWING ELEMENTS WERE
FOUND IN A SAMPLE OF
HORLICKS:
FATS
CALCIUM
CARBOHYDRATES
IONS
ZINC
IONS
SODIUM
IONS
2.) THE OBSERVED PH OF THE SAMPLE
SOLUTION IS FOUND TO BE: 8.38
CONCLUSION
1.) Five of the proclaimed nutrients
were identified in the sample of
‘HORLICKS’.
2.) Since the other nutrients present in the
taken sample of Horlicks were in very small
quantity, then presence was not identified
by the test conducted in school laboratory.
2.) Hence, the proclaimed nutrients
are present in energy supplement.

Precautions
➢Take small samples of Horlicks
diluted in proper amount of
water.
➢Boil and mix the solution
properly, filter it to perform tests
for better results.
➢Clean the apparatus properly.
➢Don’t waste the chemicals.
➢Handle the glass wares
carefully.
