Tactic #1: Eliminate temptation with the
Cupboard Cleanse
One of the biggest challenges our clients face when stuck at home is
avoiding snacking and getting into bad habits with drinking.
Not only do sugary treats and alcohol contain tons of empty calories,
making them very easy to over-consume and lead to weight gain… but both
processed foods and alcohol also disrupt your hormones. It’s a one-two
punch that puts the brakes on anyone over 40 trying to lose-weight.
But what happens when you’re tired and stressed after a long day of back-
to-back meetings, then finish work to be met with the chaos of family life…
How easy is it to say “No” to wine, crisps or chocolate?

Tactic #2: Do exercise to optimises hormones,
tone up & get the scales moving again
For women in their 20s and 30s, almost any kind of exercise works: Gym
classes, HIIT, Running, Swimming, Netball, Body pump, Couch to 5k.
All they need to do is do one of the above a few times a week and the
weight falls off.
Unfortunately for women in their 40s and 50s, changing hormones -
reduced oestrogen and progesterone levels combined with increased
cortisol levels - can make weight loss much more difficult.
On top of that, aching joints, back or hip pain made exercise like jogging,
HIIT or gym classes a bad idea - it just made the pain worse...
Most of our clients found that the things that used to work just
doesn't get results anymore… Maybe you can relate?
The reality is that women over 40 can’t get away with doing any old exercise
to lose weight.
They must focus on exercise that re-balances their hormones and increases
their metabolism.

Tactic #3: Eliminate “dieter’s thinking” to
defeat self-sabotage
Have you ever eaten something “bad” or gone off track with your diet
only to think the following thoughts?
“Sod it, I’ve ruined it all”
“What’s the point”
“I’ve failed”
“It’s too hard”
“I’m not meant to lose weight”
“I’ll start again next Monday”
Negative thought patterns like these lead to a chain reaction that leads
to emotional eating or binging and gaining weight.
But for many people this is not their fault…
It’s no surprise when traditional diets are completely black and white and
either you’re on track or you’ve failed - it creates a “dieter’s” thought
pattern.
Here’s the typical “dieter’s” thought pattern:
Event → Thoughts → Feelings → Actions → Results
E.g. Chocolate binge → “I’ve ruined it” → Demotivated → Eat & drink →
Gain weight
What’s more this can loop back around and create more negative
thoughts as now there’s a negative result - weight gain - that triggers
more negative feelings, and the cycle goes round again leading to more
emotional eating and drinking.
For most people this means they’re constantly undoing any hard
work eating well and exercising and it causes them to giving up.
It’s not a nice place to be and we wouldn’t wish it on anyone...
What works much better is to be able to break the cycle before it leads to
negative actions and results.
Event → Thoughts → Feelings | Actions → Results
With our Fit Over 40 clients we use a tool called the Thought Transformer
to brake the vicious cycle of self-sabotage and eradicate “dieter’s
thinking” so that even if someone slips up, they can draw a line under it
and move on without beating themselves up or emotional eating.

Tactic #4: Focus on quick & easy meals, not
complicated, time-consuming diet food
A lot of diets require cooking from scratch, using hard-to-find ingredients
and spending hours “meal prepping” in the kitchen each week.
This is fine for people with simple lifestyles, but for women with high-
pressure jobs and families to support, most simply don’t have the time to
do this long-term - here’s the problem with that...
If you can’t stick to something long-term the results are only ever
going to be temporary.
So if you want to lose the weight and actually keep it off, the approach
needs to fit around your life, not take it over.
The reality is, meals don’t need to be fancy or complicated to lose weight.
Many of our clients make meals in 5-10 minutes so they can focus on
their careers, family and social lives.
We also teach them how to grab food on the go from supermarkets,
service stations and high street chains and make it work for them.
To optimise hormone levels and trigger weight loss for over 40s, all these
meals need to include is a balance of protein, healthy carbs and fats (yes!
you don’t need to give up carbs to lose weight), and they will be filling
and keep your energy levels high for hours afterwards.

Tactic #5: Shield yourself from stress to avoid
emotional eating & drinking
What tends to happen when your stress levels get too high?
For the clients we coach there's constant pressure from work:
Back-to-back meetings most days
Managing a team of 10, 20 or 30+ people
Only getting 10-15 minutes for lunch (some days none)
Reporting to directors and always being in the firing line
Almost never having any downtime
And on top of this, there's the pressure of family life...
Family members getting ill and needing constant attention
Transporting kids to and from activities
Chores, cleaning and organising the household
Let’s be honest - this is all very stressful!
For a lot of people, the stress keeps building up and up and it has
nowhere to go (except for eating and drinking the feelings)...
It’s kind of like filling up a bath, leaving the taps on and never taking the
plug out. Eventually it gets too much and *BAM* - it all goes wrong and
causes a mess.
Suddenly they’re eating a sharing bag of crisps or chocolate with a large
glass of wine in front of the TV - not something that's going to help if you
want to get the scales moving.
Of course, some people may have been able to get away with this in their
20s and 30s, but with changing hormones over 40, plus more stress
leading to it happening more often, a lot of people find this leads to their
weight creeping up and up with no sign of it stopping.
What works much better is to have an outlet for the stress...

Tactic #6: Create your own ground rules for
alcohol & treats (but don’t cut them out)
It’s very easy for habits to get out of hand, especially when stress levels
are soaring and life's all work, work, work with little to enjoy day-to-day.
For example during the covid-19 lockdown a lot of people (us included)
found that having “just one drink” one or two nights a week quickly
became almost a nightly occurrence. The same thing can happen with
treats too - chocolate, desserts, biscuits or crisps.
Having these occasionally is NOT a problem. It’s something we
encourage with our clients to ensure their approach is sustainable…
I’ll say it again… with anything you can’t keep up and turn into a
lifestyle - the results will always be temporary.
Diets may tell you certain foods are “good” and others are “bad”… but
what they don’t tell you is that that if you can find the right balance then
you don’t have to cut out ANYTHING to lose weight (even when over 40
with changing hormones!).
Our clients can enjoy chocolate and wine and still lose 1-2 stone in 84
days or less, just like Naomi did...

However, this doesn’t happen overnight. There’s two stages to get to that
“balanced” stage...
Here's the two steps we take that gets our clients back in control and into
health eating habits in just 2 weeks or less...
1. Eliminate cravings using the "Cravings Killer" to limit access to
tempting foods for just 1-2 weeks...
We do this using a process called the Cravings Killer with our FIT OVER 40
clients that eliminates cravings and shifts clients back into healthy eating
habits almost overnight.
2. Set clear ground rules to find an ongoing balance (without having
to give up anything long-term)
E.g. only drinking on Fridays and Saturdays and limiting it to two single
drinks, or only having a takeaway on Fridays and compensating for it
with other food choices throughout the day.
Clients who’ve implemented these two steps find they no longer crave
things like chocolate and see the weight falling off, just like Hayley,
working mum of 2 very energetic boys did...

Tactic #7: Optimise sleep to reduce cravings and
boost energy levels
Sleep and hormones are closely linked.
If you’re currently experiencing perimenopause or menopause, you’ll
likely have noticed your sleep is far less consistent - waking in the middle
of the night, night sweats, being unable to get back to sleep etc…
Not only does this lead to fatigue, but lack of sleep disrupts the hunger
hormones leptin and ghrelin that control your cravings and feeling of
satiety (“fullness”).
So people who sleep less than 7-8 hours a night have much higher
cravings, and don’t feel full even when they’ve eaten a big portion - not
what you want if your aim is to lose weight!
However... hormonal changes can often make sleep problems feel
totally out of control.
But here’s the thing… Your hormones are ALSO affected by certain
lifestyle choices - things within your control that you CAN change.
Four things that have a big impact are:
1- Caffeine - Caffeine has a half-life of 6 hours, meaning it takes 6 hours
for it to become diluted to half its strength in your bloodstream. This
means that even if you don’t feel it, drinking a coffee in the afternoon will
be having an impact on your sleep. The best thing to do is to cut out
highly caffeinated drinks like coffee or Diet Coke after 12 noon..
2- Alcohol - Whilst alcohol can help people get off to sleep, more than a
very small amount (around one drink) actually significantly disrupts
sleep. What’s more, alcohol makes hot flushes MUCH worse, so if hot
flushes also affect your sleep as it is, then alcohol will be making your
sleep even worse than it usually does.
3- Food quality - Processed and sugary foods may give you a quick burst
of energy (although this isn’t actually sustained), but it can also disrupt
the hormones causing menopause symptoms. This means it’s likely to
lead to worse sleep quality and an increased likelihood of waking in the
middle of the night.
4- Exercise - It’s not rocket science, but those who exercise regularly
generally feel more tired in the evenings, which means they get off to
sleep quicker and sleep better too. That conversely then means they’re
less likely to late night snack or drink and that also helps with losing
weight!
These are 4 things we work on with all our clients inside our FIT OVER 40
programme and they often find their sleep is totally transformed and the
weight starts to drop off (even during tricky stages like peri-menopause
and menopause), just like it did for Catherine...

Tactic #8: Be flexible with your food choices so
it doesn't feel like a hardship
Most diets say that certain foods are “good” and certain foods are “bad” -
that there are special foods that will help you to lose weight and some
that won’t.
For example...
Carbs are fattening
Only eat low fat foods
Cut out sugar
Stop drinking alcohol
There's so much conflicting advice out there it's enough to confuse
anybody!
But here's the thing...
Whilst there are foods (and drinks) that work better for women over 40
with changing hormones - and most diets don’t even touch on this - what
they also don’t tell you is that the “good foods bad foods” approach is
simply a round-about way to reduce your calorie intake.
For example, they may say that carbs are bad and if you cut them out
you will lose weight. What they don’t tell you is that the only reason this
works is because 60% of a normal diet is made up of carbs, so if you cut
out 60% of the foods you eat, of course you’ll lose weight!
What they also don’t tell you is that unless you cut them out
forever, as soon as you start eating them again, the weight will pile
back on.
For many of our clients in the past, this has meant cooking separately
and eating separately from their families on these diets and eventually
they gave up as it was unsustainable.
But our clients don't eat that way anymore and you don't have to either...
What we find works much better for our clients is a flexible approach to
their nutrition...
There are no "good" or "bad" foods, and as long as you find the right
amount for you then you'll still be able to see fantastic results.

they like (and their family likes) whilst still balancing their hormones and
getting the quantities right for them specifically, so not only does the
weight start falling off, but it’s something they can keep up long-term and
turn into a lifestyle.

Tactic #9: Move more outside of workouts to
lose weight (without ruining your hormones)
One thing that often gets overlooked by those with busy desk-based jobs
is something called NEAT.
NEAT stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis - put simply, this is
the calories burned from activity outside of structured workouts.
This could be anything from walking around inside the house, to doing
chores, walking outside and everything in-between. The easiest way to
measure this is just by tracking your daily step count.
The crazy thing is that increasing NEAT can often burn far more
calories throughout the day than a really sweaty 45 minute spin
class, long run or brutal HIIT workout!
What’s more, for women over 40, a brutal workout like spinning or HIIT
spikes the stress hormone cortisol and this disruption can actually make
losing weight harder, not easier, especially from around the middle.
If someone’s already stressed from a high-pressure job, then this is the
last thing their body needs if they want to lose weight!
What works much better is to focus on workouts that improve your
hormonal balance (like the LIST workouts mentioned in tactic #2) and
increase low intensity activity aka your NEAT outside of that.
That's exactly what we did when working with busy PR manager Louisa,
who lost 1 stone 11lbs and 2 dress sizes in 90 days:
Tactic #10: Get motivated by setting powerful
goals using the Clear Choice method
Steps 1-9 are all great and do work for women over 40, but if someone’s
not motivated, none of that matters.
You have to actually DO those things to get the scales moving, and if
someone’s not motivated they won’t do anything.
The good news is we have a special tool called the Clear Choice method

3. Figure out what’s “in the gap” - what’s stopping you from already
being there in each area - and set clear goals to overcome those
things
Most people are unmotivated not because they don't have any
goals, but because their goals don’t focus on overcoming the
obstacles that are in the way of their goals.
For example, someone’s goal may be vague like “I want to lose weight”,
and their strategy to get there might be to “try and eat better, drink less
and exercise more.”
Not only are these goals vague and hard-to-measure, but if this person
continued to do exercise and eat foods that didn’t combat their
hormonal changes, then they’d likely see poor results and lose
motivation fast.
So a powerful goal must be constructed in a particular way so that not
only is it clear where you’re trying to get to, but you have a proven
strategy to get there so you have the hope and belief that it will work.

Tactic #11: Get accountability and support so
you don’t give up when life gets in the way
How many times have you decided to lose weight only to give up after 2-
3 weeks?
We hear this all the time from people looking to join our FIT OVER 40
programme.
Work gets stressful, a family member gets ill, they have a bad week, and
before they know it they’re thinking “Sod it, what’s the point?”
However, despite being tough, these things are normal for most women
over 40.
Life isn’t as simple and straightforward as it once was... and unless
