Mid-Sem Exam: Process Control CML303

This document is a mid-semester exam for a Process Control and Instrumentation course. It contains 3 questions: 1. Determine the outlet flowrate of a tank at various times, assuming a linear relationship between flow and resistance, as the inlet flowrate changes. 2. Calculate the time constant and damping coefficient of a manometer tube of a specified length based on provided parameters like density and viscosity. Suggest design considerations based on initial transient state. 3. Derive the transfer functions between effluent composition and inlet compositions for a mixing tank. Draw the corresponding block diagram, assuming constant inlet and outlet flowrates but variable inlet compositions.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING
Mid Semester Examination – Sep 2021
Course :-( CML303) Process Control & Instrumentation Time: - 1 hr
Sem: - 5 th Date: - 22/09/2021 Total Marks: - 25
All Questions are Compulsory.
Assume suitable data whenever necessary.

Important Note: - Read the instructions carefully which are highlighted in yellow colour.
S.N. Question Marks

1. A tank having a cross sectional area of 0.3m . The steady state flow rate of water in 9M
the tank is 0.5m3/min is suddenly increased to 0.55 m3/min. The level in the tank is
0.6 m for 0.06 m3/min flowrate and 0.5 m for 0.03 m3/min flowrate. Determine the
(Approx.1.5
outlet flowrate at t = 0.5min, t=1 min and t= 1.5min. Assume linear relationship
between flow and resistance. page)
2. A manometer XXXcm long 6.3mm inside diameter glass tube is 50% filled with 9M
water. The manometer is subjected to a pressure differential of
7000N/[Link] (a) Time constant, (b) Damping coefficient. Suggest design of
(Approx.2
the manometer considering the initial transient state. Given: Density of
water=1000kg/m3, viscosity of water=1mN-s/m2. pages)
(Instruction: - XXXcm- If your enrolment no. is BT19CME001 then use
manometer tube length as last three digit of your enrolment number i.e. 001cm
long)
3. Consider the mixing tank as shown in Figure. 7M
Assume that all inlet and outlet flow rates
remain constant but that the compositions of the
(Approx.1.5
inlets can change. Derive the transfer functions
between the composition of the effluent and the pages)
compositions of the inlet streams. Draw the
corresponding block diagram.
