Engine Electrical Systems Technical Service

SUBJECT
Service Engine Soon Lamp (MIL) On with DME Fault 120408 Stored

MODEL
F56 (Cooper and Cooper S Hardtop)

With B38M and B48M engines produced to 7/1/2014

SITUATION
The Service Engine Soon lamp (MIL) is illuminated with a reduction of engine power.

Fault 120408: Charging pressure control: Switch-off, pressure build-up blocked is stored in the DME.

CAUSE

1. This fault normally sets as the result of a problem with another component of the engine management
system.
2. When there are no faults, the vehicle voltage might drop momentarily below the threshold of 9.985V,
typically during an MSA engine start. This could result in the charge-air control being switched off.

PROCEDURE
Perform a vehicle test and check for faults in any of the following components:

 Camshaft sensor
 Crankshaft sensor
 Ambient pressure sensor
 Intake-air temperature sensor
 Charge-air pressure sensor
 Electric wastegate actuator
 Charge-air pressure control
 VANOS

Work through all recommended test plans and correct the faulted system as necessary.

If there are no faults stored in any of the components or systems listed, program the vehicle using the latest
version of ISTA/P.

Target integration level: R056-14-07-500 or higher

For information on programming and coding with ISTA/P, refer to CenterNet / Aftersales Portal / Service /
Workshop Technology / Vehicle Programming.

Always connect a MINI approved battery charger/power supply (SI M04 08 09).

diagnosis system – checking faults)
and
Connect an approved battery
61 21 528 Refer to KSD2 charger/power supply (indicated in KSD
2 as Charging battery)
and if necessary
61 00 730 Refer to KSD2 Programming/encoding control units

Labor operation code 00 00 006 is a Main labor operation. If you are using a Main labor code for another repair,
use the Plus code labor operation 00 00 556 instead.

Refer to KSD2 for the corresponding flat rate unit (FRU) allowance. Enter the Chassis Number, which consists of
the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the “Search” button, and then enter the
applicable flat rate labor operation in the FR code field.

If a control module fails to program correctly or initializations are required, the additional work must be claimed
using separate labor operations found in KSD2 under the defect code listed above.

Other Repairs

If performing ISTA diagnostics and related test plans results in other eligible and covered work, including the
seven listed components in the Procedure section, claim this work with the applicable defect code and/or labor
operations listed in KSD2.
