Sub-Grade Road Works Method Statement

This document provides a method statement for sub-grade road works for the Al Marina Development project. It outlines the tools, materials, and construction requirements for preparing the sub-grade to support overlying structural layers. Key steps include conditioning the embankment, shaping and compacting the roadbed, and testing the compacted sub-grade to achieve at least 95% of maximum dry density according to specified standards. Safety, quality control, and references are also addressed.

1.0: Description

This item shall consist of the preparation of the subgrade for the support of overlying
structural layers. It shall extend to full width of the roadway. Unless authorized by the
Engineer, subgrade preparation shall not be done unless the contractor is able to start
immediately the construction of the pavement structure.

2.0: Tools and Equipment Requirements

2.1. Tipper trucks

2.2. Loader (Shovel)
2.3. Grader
2.4. Compactor (5 to 10 tonnes)
2.5. Water tanker
2.6. Surveying Instruments
2.7. Materials testing instruments and devices
2.8. Safety equipments.

3.0: Materials Requirements

Unless otherwise stated in the contract, sub-grade shall be constructed of suitable

materials, in consonance with the following definitions:

3.1. Suitable Materials – Material which is acceptable in accordance with the contract and
which can be compacted in the manner specified in this item.
Soil of such gradation that all particles will pass a sieve no. 3” (75mm) and not more than
35 mass percent will pass the no. 200 (0.075mm) sieve as determined by AASHTO T 11.
The materials shall have a plasticity index of not more than 10 as determined by AASHTO
T 90 and liquid limit of not more than 40 as determined by AASHTO T 89.

3.2. Materials to be used shall be classified as A-2-4 as per AASHTO M145 and the
frequency of sampling and testing shall be done for every 1000 cu.m. CBR of the
materials shall be 25% minimum as per ASTM 1883.

3.3. Compacted layer thickness shall not be more than 150mm with a layer thickness
tolerance of + or - 20mm or 10%. Level tolerance allowed is + or – 20mm for every 25
linear meter.

4.0: Construction Requirements

4.1: Prior to commencing preparation of the sub-grade, all infrastructure works shall be
completed.

4.2. After the embankment has been completed, the full width shall be conditioned by
removing any soft or other unstable material that will not compacted properly. The
resulting areas and all other low sections, holes, depressions shall be brought to grade
with suitable material. The roadbed shall be shaped and compacted to the requirements of
project specification as specified in the approved drawings. Scarifying, blading, dragging,
rolling, or other methods of works shall be performed or used as necessary to provide a
thoroughly compacted roadbed shaped to the cross-sections shown on the plan. Water
shall be added in order to obtain required density with a tolerance of + or – 2% of optimum
moisture content obtained in laboratory.

4.3. The completed sub-grade work shall be required to protect and maintain in good
condition. Maintenance include repairing and re-compacting ruts, soft spots, and
deteriorated sections of the sub-grade caused by the vehicle/equipments working in the
area.

5.0: Materials Testing

Compacted sub-grade shall be tested in accordance with AASHTO T 191, T-205, or other
approved field density tests, including the use of properly calibrated troxler machines. If
the specified density and moisture conditions have not been attained, additional
compaction work and watering shall be done to attain specified conditions. One (1) test of

in-situ density is required for every 2,000 sq.m. if sand-cone method is used or three (3)
test for the same area if troxler device is used. Compacted sub-grade shall attain at least
95% of the maximum dry density(MDD) of laboratory compaction as determined by
AASHTO T 180.

6.0: Other Requirements

6.1. Safety

6.1.1. All equipments/vehicles to be used shall be certified by the traffic authority.

6.1.3. Minimum safety equipment shall be used by all personnel (e.g. safety vest, helmet,
safety shoes, ear plug, gloves, eyeglasses, etc.)
6.1.4. Deep excavation in the work areas shall be barricaded and warning signage shall
be installed.
6.1.5. Safety officer shall be on site to monitor and report safety violations to ensure a safe
working environment.

6.2. Quality Control

6.2.1. QC inspector shall inspect the site from time to time to ensure the work shall be
carried out in accordance with this method of statement, approved project specifications,
and/or municipal standard specifications.
6.2.2. If any non-conformance and violation of this method of statement, NCR shall be
issued in accordance with Non-Conforming product control and review procedure and
submitted to consultant office within 48 hours.
