1.2 Operation

1.2.1 Manual mode

Manual mode operation allows the operator to start and stop the
compressor. Once the compressor reaches the set final pressure
(pU), it is automatically stopped.
The operator starts the compressor by pressing the START
button. If the pressure is below the final pressure value, the motor
is immediately started using a Star-Delta technique. Once the
final pressure value is reached, the compressor stops. The
compressor only starts after the operator presses the START
button.
The compressor can be stopped at any time by pressing the
STOP button.

Description

1.2.2 Automatic mode

Automatic mode operation is when the working pressure starts or
stops the compressor.
The operator must start the compressor by pressing the START
button. If the pressure is below the final pressure value (pU), the
motor is started using the Star-Delta technique. After the final
pressure value has been reached, the compressor stops and
stays in stand-by. The compressor starts automatically when the
working pressure drops below the preset switch-on pressure (pL).
The cycle continues until the compressor is stopped by pressing
the STOP button. The START button must be pressed to start
automatic mode once again.
If the working pressure is below the final pressure value but
above the switch-on value, the compressor can be started at any
time by pressing the START button.

2 Definitions

2.1 Error
An error is an abnormal status which has been identified and is
displayed to the operator and which, depending on the type of
error and definition, can make an automated protective measure
necessary. A notification contact an transmit the error signal to a
higher-level control.

2.1.1 Start inhabit fault (S)

Start inhabit fault is a status which represents a danger to the
compressor or which can cause damage to the compressor if it is
started.
Start inhabit fault instances are only triggered if a compressor
start is attempted while in STAND-BY condition. Start inhabit fault
instances are not triggered by an automatic motor start sequence
while in STAND-BY. Start inhabit fault instances can reset on their
own. A start inhabit fault error code is displayed but is not stored
in the error log.

2.1.2 Alarm fault (A)

An alarm is a warning status which does not pose an immediate
danger or represent potential damage to the compressor. An
alarm does not shut the compressor down and does not impair
normal operation.
An alarm code is displayed and must be cleared manually as
soon as the cause of the alarm has been eliminated or is no
longer present.

2.1.3 Shutdown fault (E)

A shutdown fault is a status representing a danger to the
compressor.
When a shutdown fault occurs, the control stops the compressor.
A shutdown fault code is displayed and has to be cleared
ECC_Control_K1_5_en_09.fm

manually.

8
Definitions

2.2 Final pressure pU

The final pressure is the maximum working pressure where the
control stops the compressor. The final pressure can be adjusted.

2.3 Switch-on pressure pL

The switch-on pressure is the minimum working pressure where
the compressor is started in automatic mode by the control. The
switch-on pressure can be adjusted.

2.4 Remote start SS

If this function is selected (SS = 1) in manual and automatic
mode, then the compressor can only be started via a connected
switch.
A combination of various switches can also be connected in
series. The compressor starts when all contacts are closed. The
compressor stops when a contact is opened.
The compressor is stopped by the control when one of the
following situations arises:
– The remote start contact is open.
– The control's STOP button is pressed.
The final pressure reaches the preset pressure (pU).

Warning!
In automatic mode there must be a manually acknowledged
switch included in the series. Otherwise the compressor cannot
be started or will start on its own. The STOP button and E-STOP
button are always activated.
ECC_Control_K1_5_en_09.fm

9
2.5 Final pressure sensor CS
When this function is selected (CS = 1), the internal final pressure
sensor is deactivated. This sensor only switches the compressor
off or sets off an alarm when overpressure occurs. The START-
STOP function can then be assumed by a connected switch.
A combination of various switches can also be connected in
series. If all contacts are closed, the compressor is started; the
compressor is stopped when a contact opens.
Starting by using the START button on the control only takes
place in manual mode when the connected switch is closed. The
compressor stops when the contact opens or when the STOP
button is pressed. The contact must be closed again and the
START button pressed for a new start attempt.
Using the START button on the control to start up only takes
place in manual mode when the connected switch is closed.
The STOP button and E-STOP are always activated.

2.6 RS485 control

If this function is selected (CS = 2) in automatic mode, the
START-STOP function is transferred to the higher level control
connected via the RS485 connection. Up to 4 (11) compressors
can be operated by the same MECC. The E-STOP is always
activated.

2.7 Motor start sequence

The control starts the Star contact encoder 200 ms after the start
command. After the starting time in the Star connection a switch-
over to a Delta connection takes place with a transition time of 50
ms. The starting time with a Star connection is adjustable.
If a stop command is received during the starting phase, the
control completes the start sequence before stopping the motor.
This setting minimizes use of switch-off current.
ECC_Control_K1_5_en_09.fm

10
Definitions

2.8 Start
The was put into operation by pressing the START button or by a
remote start command or it is in a READY condition in automatic
mode and is waiting to respond to the switch-on pressure signal
by starting up.

2.9 Operation
The compressor has been started and the motor is running.
A notification contact can transmit the signal to a higher level
control.

2.10 Heating
Option
If this input is closed, the R5 output is active (closed). A
thermostat or other device allows the heating to be controlled. A
corresponding power supply must be provided conforming to the
heating capacity.
If the display field function is set to 0 in the P07 configuration
menu:
"*ON" (heating on)
OR
"*OFF" (heating off)
is shown on the control display, provided that the item and value
field display is set to operating mode display and, if required, has
been locked to that setting.

3 Gas compressor options

3.1 Suction pressure valve

The suction pressure valve is closed when the compressor is
stopped or in READY mode. The suction valve is open while the
compressor is running.

3.2 Suction pressure delay time (gas compressor)

Only in automatic mode:
The suction pressure delay time is the period during which the
compressor is stopped if the compressor was stopped by tripping
of the suction pressure monitor switch.
After the suction pressure delay time has passed, the suction
pressure build-up time (see suction pressure build-up time) starts
and the suction pressure valve opens.
In special individual cases, restart can be blocked and the "low
suction pressure" error message appears immediately (SE = 1).

ECC_Control_K1_5_en_09.fm

12
Gas compressor options

3.3 Suction pressure build-up time

3.3.1 Suction pressure build-up time in automatic mode:

After the suction pressure delay time has passed, then the
suction pressure build-up time begins. This time is for pressure
build-up after a switch-off occurs due to insufficient suction
pressure. If the suction pressure is above the setpoint after this
period, the compressor is automatically restarted.
If the suction pressure is below the setpoint after this period, the
compressor is not started and a "suction pressure too low" error
code is displayed.

3.3.2 Suction pressure build-up time in manual mode

If the compressor is stopped by triggering of the suction pressure
monitor switch, the compressor can immediately be restarted in
manual mode. The cause of the error should be eliminated first.
Pressing the START button starts the suction pressure build-up
time and the suction pressure valve opens. The compressor
starts if the suction pressure is above the setpoint after the
suction pressure build-up time. If the suction pressure is below
the setpoint, the compressor does not start and a "suction
pressure too low" error code is displayed.
ECC_Control_K1_5_en_09.fm

13
3.4 Suction pressure follow-up time
In automatic and manual mode

If the compressor stops because the STOP button is pressed or

switch-off pressure has been reached, then the suction valve
follow-up time is started and the valve closes after this time.

3.5 Pre-pressure control

If appropriately equipped, the compressor can be controlled via
the pre-pressure and final pressure. The oil pressure or oil level
is monitored by a pressure switch or floating switch and the
sensor input is used for the pre-pressure control (FP = 1). Only if
the pre-pressure (ED/AD) and the final pressure (Pl/Pu) have
reached their respective setpoints is the compressor started or
stopped.

4.4 Display structure and menu navigation

4.4.1 Display - Item structure

All value, parameter or option selection displays are grouped into
menu lists. The items are assigned to the respective list
according to type and classification.
Items which can be used for selecting options or to change
functions are assigned to menu mode lists. Items which the
operator has to see during routine operation, such as the
pressure or temperature values, are assigned to the normal
operating mode list. The lists are paginated with the normal
operation display list as page 0.
All parameters and options are assigned to the menu mode
pages 1 or higher.
All page 0 items can only be viewed and cannot be modified.

22
User interface

4.4.2 Normal operating mode (page 0)

When the control is initialized, all the display elements and LED
indicators are switched on for three seconds. The display then
shows the software version code for another 3 seconds before
completion of the initialisation routine and the normal operation
display (page 0) is displayed.
On page 0 the display field constantly shows the final pressure.
Initially the item and value fields show the information display for
35 seconds before resuming the error indicator display. All
existing item and value field option displays (temperatures,
pressures, hour counters) can be selected at any time by
pressing the PLUS or MINUS buttons. If not other selection is
made, after 35 seconds the item display resumes the error
indicator display.
Pressing the ENTER key locks each item display selected and
prevents the system from returning to the error display. If the item
indicator is blocked, the key symbol blinks slowly.
To unlock the item indicator press RESET or ESCAPE. Press
PLUS or MINUS in order to view an alternative value. On page 0,
ESCAPE selects the status information display. RESET select
every active error code display or the status information display if
no errors are active. If no selected item display is blocked, the
display automatically switches to the status information display
when events occur which generally change the status. The delay
period before returning to the error indicator is changed in some
cases to allow the entire area of a preselected countdown
counter to be displayed.
On page 0 no item values, options or parameters can be
adjusted. If an error status occurs, the error code for the first list
item is displayed. The display automatically jumps to the display
for the error code. More than one active error code item can be
pending at one time.

The service countdown timer counts down the number of
operating hours starting from a preset value. When the item is
viewed, the operating hours count is shown until routine servicing
must be completed (zero hours).
When zero hours is reached, a warning signal "service due" is
displayed. The operating hours count is continued as a negative
value until the message is cleared by pressing the RESET key.

Notifications and alarms

5 Notifications and alarms

Shutdown faults are abnormal operating statuses which may
signify a danger to the compressor or the system.
Faults are statuses indicating that normal operating conditions
have been exceeded without representing imminent danger.
Faults are only intended as a warning and do not prevent the
compressor from being started or stopped.
Start inhibit faults are error statuses which prevent the
compressor from starting because there is a danger to the
compressor if it were started. A start inhibit faults resets itself if
the condition for a normal operating value resumes.
