LESSON 8: NATURE OF THE CLINICAL LABORATORY
The Clinical Laboratory
It is an essential component of health institutions
Main Task: To provide accurate, reliable information to medical doctors for the diagnosis,
prognosis, treatment, and management of diseases.
70%
Decisions performed by medical doctors are based on laboratory test results.
MLS plays a very significant role in the performance of laboratory testing and ensuring the
reliability of laboratory results.
MANUAL LESS LABORIOUS
TAXING SHORTENED TURNAROUND
TIME
LABOR- INTENSIVE PRODUCE MORE
TIME-CONSUMING RELIABLE RESULTS
It also actively involved in
Research
Community outreach programs
Surveillance
Infection control in the hospital and community settings
Information dissemination
Evaluation of applicability of current and innovative diagnostic technologies
CLASSIFICATIONS OF CLINICAL LABORATORY
ACCORDING TO FUNCTION
Clinical Pathology
Concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases performed through laboratory testing
of blood and other body fluids.
Anatomic Pathology
Concerned with the diagnosis of diseases through microscopic examination of tissues and
organs.
ACCORDING TO INSTITUTIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Institution-based
A clinical laboratory that operates within the premises or part of an institution.
Free-standing
A laboratory that is not part of an established institutions.
