Make-up Class (Tuesday, September 12, 2022)
Instructions:
This assignment makes up for today’s class. You will read each of the paragraphs carefully and
when you know the type of paragraph it is, write the answer next to the paragraph. The following
definitions will help you better understand the paragraphs and how to identify them.
Types of paragraphs:
1. Narration: A story that is written to explain what, when, and who. It reveals what a
reader should learn. Narration paragraphs are usually written in chronological order.
2. Descriptive- Rich descriptive words that put a picture of a person, place, or object in a
reader’s mind. When a person is writing a descriptive piece, there should be very
detailed observations, write what you see in your mind. All parts should be equal. The
more detail the better the story. You should start at one point and move in one direction
so as not to confuse the audience. Such as clockwise, left to right, and top to bottom.
The reader should be able to envision the picture that you had in your mind as the writer.
Transitional Expressions-Next to, near, close, far, up, down, between, above,
below, left, right, center, toward, away.
- All of these are used when writing a descriptive paragraph.
3. Classification Paragraph: the purpose of a classification paragraph is to clearly define
something and place it in a group according to some basis or rule so that it only fits in
one group. In order to be successful at this, you have to be very detailed.
The same information can be classified into more than one category, but the classification
paragraph sticks to one basis of classification. The topic sentence has two parts: the topic, and
the basis of classification, which is the controlling idea; it controls how the writer approaches the
subject.
Classify- to gather into types, kinds, or categories according to a single basis of
division.
Logical sequence- list the categories in this order: either most to least
outrageous, least to most expensive, from largest to smallest, and so on.
Transitional expressions:
can be divided
can be classified
can be categorized
the first type
the second kind

4. Process Paragraphs: There are Two Types of Process Paragraphs
Process writing is useful when writing on history, business, the sciences,
psychology, and many other areas
a. How to: This gives the reader steps or directions on how he or she can do
something.
b. Explanation: This tells the reader how a particular event occurred or how something
works.
Transitional Expressions:
Beginning a Process (at)first, initially, begin by
Continuing the Process second, third step, until, after(ward), then, next later, before,
when, while, as soon as, as, upon, during, meanwhile
Ending a Process finally, at last
Checklist
This is a checklist to help you when writing a Process Paragraph
* Narrow the topic. Think of whom you are writing to
* Make a topic sentence that clearly states what your process result will be
* Free write or brainstorm some ideas that might help with the process
* Drop unnecessary information that is not necessary for the process
* Make an outline with the steps of how you will write it.
* Write a draft of the process and use transition expressions to indicate the order
* Revise
* Proofread to make sure that you have no errors in grammar or spelling, punctuation, or
mechanics
5. Illustration: To illustrate is to explain a general statement by means of more specific
examples. Detailed and well-chosen examples add interest, liveliness, and power to your
writing. The illustrations are what we say more vivid and more exact. A single example
may also be a Narrative, a story that illustrates the topic sentence. Writers often use
illustrations to develop a paragraph. An illustration paragraph usually contains:
a. A topic sentence.
b. The body should have approximately three vivid and exact examples that
support the topic sentence.
c. The examples should be put in order of importance and separated by a
transitional expression.
Transitional expressions:
* for instance
* for example
* an illustration of this
* a case in point is
* to illustrate
* another instance of
* another example of

Daters Beware
1. Classification Paragraph Men can be categorized by the way they treat women
while dating into three groups: a social addict, a content
lover, or a keeper. The first type, a social addict, is the type
of man who is constantly late and everything is on his time.
Social addicts are particularly self-absorbed. For your
birthday this type of dater will give you a gift such as a
necklace so that everybody can notice it. When it comes
down to emotions and feelings, a social addict will say
whatever he assumes you want to hear at any given
moment. The second type of dater, a content lover, is a guy
who will come and go as he pleases. These men just seem
to be in attendance but not involved. When he is with you,
he will not open up and share his thoughts. A content lover
will forget your birthday altogether. Lastly, there is the
keeper who will not keep you waiting; in fact, he always
plans and involves you in the decision-making. To them,
your birthday is tremendously important. They will give you
time for your friends and family; in addition, they always
make unique plans for the two of you later that evening.
Unlike the other types of daters, the keeper will attempt to
be 100% in touch with their feelings towards you and are
willing to talk about them. Men’s dating styles differ;
nonetheless, it all comes down to what behavior you are in
the mood for.
Preparation of Orange Syrup
2. Classification Paragraph First, oranges are bought from the market. Then, the
rotten ones are rejected. After that, the wholesome oranges
are washed and peeled. Then, the oranges are crushed in
a specially designed bowl. Now, the seeds are strained
away. After that, sugar is added. Finally, the solution of
sugar and orange juice is stirred and the orange syrup is
ready.

Snap Shot
3. Descriptive
Back in 1999, this fearless athlete posed in this
football picture. In the far distance below the cloudless sky
stands an off-white stadium. Embedded in the center are
large, cracked, blue, painted, letters that spell out BISON.
Beneath the old stadium are rows of worn-out bleachers
which are empty. Up in front stands the competitor down on
one knee. As you observe more, the sports player is
wearing a blue Bison jersey sporting the number 60. To the
left above the freshly trimmed green grass that engulfs this
player’s figure lays a football. In the center of the picture,
you see her pale white face and dark brown eyes. Around
these features, you cannot help but notice the bronzed hair;
which appears to be pulled back around this slender face.
Her stern look shows how proud she is; nonetheless, all the
confidence she carries on her padded-up shoulders. This
unique woman is not only elegant and brave; she is my
sister, Margaret Eva Hoyt.
Peddling On My Own
4. Narration Learning how to ride a bike for the first time was a
nerve-racking independent moment. I was about five years
old when my sister informed me that I was too old to still be
riding a bike with training wheels. That was the time I
decided not to depend on them anymore. Even though I
had some doubts, my sister and I went outside and started
to take the little wheels off my bike. After my bike
transformed, I was ready for the big moment. With
butterflies in my stomach, I slowly got on the bike, and with
my shaky hands, I gripped the handles tightly. Meanwhile,
my sister was holding on to me to help keep my balance. I
was so afraid that she would let me go, yet I was
determined to ride this bike on my own. Next with a little
push from her, I started to peddle. The faster my bike went
the faster my heart raced. Finally, I looked back nervously
and noticed that my sister let go of my bike a long time ago.
I was so excited that I accomplished freedom on my bike
that I forgot to peddle. The next step I remember, I was
lying on the ground, yet I did not care because of the
adrenaline rush. I will never forget the exhilarating moment
and growing up stage of riding a bike without training
wheels.

My Favorite Family Experience
5. Narration One of my favorite family experiences was when I
went to see Anne Frank’s (a Jewish victim of the Nazi
persecution during World War II) hideout in Amsterdam,
Holland. I had read Anne’s published diary when I was
younger, so I was extremely thrilled to have the chance to
see where she and her family hid from the Germans for so
many months. I walked up the stairs of an apartment
building and into a room with only a bookshelf in it. From
what I remembered from reading the diary, there was a
doorknob behind the books. I found the doorknob and
turned it and there was the secret annex. When I stepped
into the room behind the bookshelf, I felt as if I had stepped
back into history. I found Anne’s room still with pictures of
her favorite celebrities on her walls. The Frank family’s
furniture was still placed where they had left them in the
rooms, everything just as described in the diary. I toured
each room in awe of actually seeing how they had lived, yet
with sadness to know how it all ended. Anne’s diary was no
longer just a book to me, but a truly heartfelt, emotional life
story was written by a girl I felt I almost knew.
Preparation of Butter
6. Classification Paragraph Butter is prepared through several steps. At first,
fresh milk is obtained. Next, the cream is separated from
the milk by churning. Then, the cream is soured and
pasteurized. Thus, butter is obtained. Then this butter is
forced into a roller to make it smooth and uniform in taste
and color. Finally, the butter is packed and sent off to the
market.
My Escape
7. Narration Most people have special places where they go to
relax and find inspiration. For example, my most relaxing
and inspirational place to be is at Riceville Bridge. It is a
peaceful pull-off area past Belt, Montana just before
entering the Sluice box, state park. My family and I have
spent many times there. When I was younger my sister and
I learned how to swim in Belt Creek at Riceville Bridge. My
grandma is buried outside of Belt at the Belt cemetery, so
when I want to get away I usually go out to Riceful Bridge
and sit by the calming, peaceful Belt Creek. The sound of
the rapidly flowing creek, birds in the background, and the

smell of fresh air makes me look back and remember all of
the fun and exciting memories I have had with my family
out there. It is also very peaceful to me because I feel like
my grandma is watching over me, protecting me, and
letting me know that life is sometimes very difficult but to
never give up. Sometimes life for me is very difficult and
frustrating. That’s when I turn to Riceful Bridge because I
know that I can sit out there and talk to myself and vent
things out and feel like I have some type of connection with
the atmosphere. It is by far my most relaxing and
inspirational place to be because I feel very comfortable
and wanted there.
The Old Car
8. Descriptive The old car slowly chugged down the street like the
caboose of a steam engine train. The car goes up the hill it
goes Kaboom, ka-chunk. The car is old and weathered with
rust covering the entire body like cancer-consuming its
victim. Wheels and tires wobble like a drunk bum on his
way home from the bar. Hub caps are gone along with all
the mirrors and extras on the car. Black smoke flows out
the rotten tail pips like the smoke out of an old cobb pipe.
The local junk yard had seen better cars than this. The
interior was a dusty brown with holes covering almost every
square inch of the seat covers. The ceiling was hanging
down and the rust had eaten through the roof like a Billy
goat through a tin can. This old car is my old car and it is as
faithful as a good old dog by always starting and getting me
from where I need to go.
College Students
9. Classification Paragraph Many college students face several pressures. For
instance, many students have to manage a job while at the
same time balancing their school work. This can be very
stressful for a college student. Students also face many
financial pressures. For example, numerous students have
to pay for their college on their own. This gives them no
other alternative but to take out student loans. Which could
leave them in debt for many years. Another example of
financial pressure for students is having to support a family
while attending college. Supporting a family while attending
college can be extremely difficult. Finally, many college
students go to college students go to college in different
cities and states and have to make new friends and adjust
to a different atmosphere. Being a college student can be
very rewarding but, there may also be a lot of pressures
that need to be dealt with.

Shoppers
10. Classification Paragraph Shoppers can be classified according to their
shopping techniques, as necessity shoppers,
overspenders, and impulsive shoppers. Necessity shoppers
have an uncomplicated and normal shopping technique.
They purchase only the items that are necessary, such as
food and toiletries, and they only get these items when they
need them. The overspenders purchase too many items
and spend too much money on them. They buy
unnecessary products, such as clothes and accessories.
They can turn a simple trip to the store into a wallet-
draining extravaganza. Finally, there are impulsive
shoppers. They are a combination of necessity shoppers
and overspenders. They intend to be necessity shoppers
by buying items that they need, but they turn into
overspenders by buying unnecessary clothes and useless
items. Even though there are millions of shoppers
worldwide, they can easily be classified by their techniques
as necessity shoppers, overspenders, or impulsive
shoppers.
